Doe Deere Blogazine

Tales of the Unicorn Queen

1 year of GLEE!

Category Blogging, Fun & Games

Exactly one year ago, in August 2008, I wrote my first entry for Doe Deere Blogazine. My heart skipped a beat as I pressed that blue “Publish” button. After that, my life was never the same again.

I can’t believe it’s been a year already. It seems like only yesterday we’ve shared our beauty secrets, debated whether women should take their husbands’ names & confided our deepest secrets into each other. 12 months and 307 posts later, 3,500 people jump on this carousel of GLEE daily to read, comment, seek or give advice. They say it’s all about the audience and it’s true – but it goes far beyond that. What this is, is a community of intelligent, open-minded, engaging people – a community I’m proud to be a part of!

All my fans who stuck with me from the beginning – thank you! You have changed my life in ways that I cannot even express. A huge thanks to fellow bloggers who tirelessly supported me through my most difficult first year. And last but not least, my family and friends – thank you for reading my blog even though you don’t have to!! It means the world to me.

In order to celebrate this joyful occasion, I have prepared a couple surprises.

Doe Deere’s Box of Delights: Anniversary Edition

I always put lots of thought into my boxes, but this time it’s going to be extra special! To win the Anniversary Edition Doe Deere’s Box of Delights, tell me in comments: What do you love about this blogazine? What would you like to see more of? Is there a particular subject you’d like to see me cover in the future?

Winner will be picked at random and announced on August 21st.

20% off on select Lime Crime products!
What better way to celebrate the anniversary than by rocking some colorful makeup? Sale begins today, August 14th and ends on August 21st.

Here’s to another year of sparkly, infectious GLEE!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAYYY!!

I think what I love the most about this blog is how inspirational it is. Whether it be inspirational with colors and makeup, or how you insist on looking reality in the face and telling it to BACK OFF! You’re one of the most life-changing dreamers I’ve ever had the honor of “knowing” (I do feel as if I know you.. is that weird?), and, after this blog, I do consider you one of my true heroines. This blog has made me (and I’m sure it will continue to do so) laugh, think, and squee happily. :D

    Hi!

There are so many things about Doe Deere Blogzine that I love, it’s hard to choose just one thing.

But, I think the thing that I love the most is that it’s so inspiring and that you are yourself even when people give you a hard time about it. It gives me the courage to not worry about what people think about the way I look and dress.

You’re such a bright and vibrant person, inside and out.

I don’t know where to begin – I love that with your blogazine you make every day of you life like a fairytale! it makes me never want to stay at home and watch telly all day ever again! I love that you’re so passionate about beauty but also ridiculously intelligent – the world seems to think you can only be one or the other! i’m always amazed by your intellect, and I love that you never follow the crowd and are not a jealous or bitchy girl who’s afraid of other females being powerful or successful.
About the blogazine in general – I love the layout and colours, and the photos are the best.
I’d like to see a blog on phobias, a thrift store exibition, a forest photoshoot, the circus, feminism, skysalt!! and all your past projects! being famous – its possible pros and cons, what it’s like being semi-famous, Mark! (one of the reasons I feel I can relate to you is your relationship with him, I too have been with my boyfriend since I was young, and I don’t know about you, but people have always told me i should leave him and ‘live my life’ and that I will ‘get over him’ i’m ‘too young to understand’ etc) more of your poetry! redheads, moscow/st petersberg, a one off of you wearing very mainstream, boring clothes for the day! interesting! or some complete change or look, just for a day! limecrime clothes (i have no photos to remember them with :-( )

The contest ends on my Birthday! That is a bit exciting.

I love this blog because its so diverse in its unity. You cover so many wonderful things about feeling beautiful and being a woman. I particularly love seeing some of your fashion and your make-up tutorials. They have inspired me to do so much with mine. (I actually have some make-up pics to send you of things I have done). You give an inspiration to those of us who want to be creative in our every day lives and feel at a loss as to how.

I would love to see something on being fashionable for cheap (something with thrifting and such). Also some more on finding your own fashion. I would hope to see some more make-up tutorials or maybe even an article on experimenting with color and different brushes/strokes/techniques.

I am so glad to be a part of this experience. I love this blog and I am so glad I stumbled on it and your make-up!

  • PaintHead (jessie) says:

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

Don’t know if there is anything i would want to see more or less, but just keep doing what you do and that’s all that matters. Yes it is cool to hear what people want to see , but in the end it is what comes from within that shines through. I found exactly a year ago as well a picture of you in poly. Since then you have been one of my inspiration for many of my sets. People would ask “Who is that model” and i would direct them to ur blog.

But you rock and stay you! oxoxoxoxo
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ..eat some cake for me! oxoxox hugs
Funny i will be celebrating my bday this saturday, my bday was august 12th..awwwwwwww Cupcake Hugs! oxoxox

  • Heidi says:

I love the Doe Deere Blogazine because it brings a splash of color to my daily life. I couldn’t ask for a better blog to display a daily dose of optimism, candyfuturism, and all things cute! After a year of reading the blog, it never gets boring. There’s always something new and I love the variety of posts and the intense imagination that goes into every thought!

    Happy Birthday!

  • birdie says:

I love the brightness… the happiness… the enthusiasm you have embraced this project with! I love that it IS a gleeful community and that you still carry that same message from your earlier posts.

  • Doe Deere says:

Hey guys, checking in from Russia! Thank you for all the amazing support!!!

  • Chriss says:

What do you love about this blogazine?
The fashion, hands down. I don’t have friends or family who are into eccentric clothing and styles so this blog was my safe haven. After you concocted the idea of candyfuturism, I started seeing it everywhere. From Sephora to Audrey Kitching. http://audrey.buzznet.com/user/journal/4390761/pinks-more-fun/
It was very exciting to see a new trend unfold.

  • Isy says:

Well I love it because it’s a pure injection of joy. A vivid fairy-tale… only real. A wonderful, ” candyfuturistic “, freakin optimistic view of the world. A world of pastels, rainbows and all kind of incredible kitschy paradises.
I love it because it’s exactly as going visit Neuschwanstein ( the castle that actually inspired the Disney’ one ): only less complicate.
I love it because everytime I see ” Doe Deere blogazine (1) ” on my googlereader I giggle of joy.
And I think it’s already pretty AWESOME.
I wish to see some more of candyfuturistic-related posts, but I’m sure you will do that anyway.
    Otherwise, you’re really perfect.
Thank you thank you Xenia !

There are so many things that I love about this blog :]

First and foremost, probably, would have to be the infinite source of inspiration it has given me. Not only with your makeup ideas and tutorials, but also your advice and your genuine kindness. I haven’t known about your blog for that long, really only for the past month or two. But after searching through your posts, I’ve become pretty interested in what you have to say. I love your outlook on life, and think the Candyfuturism idea is simply fantastic! I agree, make your own future, and don’t let the bad things in life take that future away from you. Even in the little time I’ve been reading your blog, the Candyfuturism has helped me open my eyes to what I want my future to be.

I just started my senior year in high school and have been feeling pretty lost,. But after some long, thought-out discussions and a bunch of help from you and your blog, I’ve realized that I don’t have to feel lost. :] Because I have a future doing what I love to do.
Something I’d like to see more of is most definitely your makeup tutorials. Your ideas are always amazing and eye-catching! As a studying cosmetologist, hoping to become a makeup artist, makeup tutorials would be much, much appreciated :D

    Happy one-year Ms. Doe!!! :]

  • Charlie says:

Oh, happy birthday to the blogazine! (:

ooooh! Many happy returns! I undoubtedly adore this blog, it’s… so… happy! I t’s brilliant, lifts me right out of my blues, your like a magic glittery down day cure :). I sincerely hope to be seeing more of you for yars to come, I must admit though my favourite piece of your blog are your expeditions, how you can turn an ordinary trip into something spectacular! well done you
Best wishes and buckets of love
    Eris

  • Choo says:

    Happy Anniversary!

Keep up the great work <3

  • Back in January, someone suggested I try LimeCrime since I was trying to be more “girly” and still keep an edge. From there, I found myself here at the blog. And I read, and read, and read, and read…

It was the innocuous start to what eventually blossomed into my own website and an ability to embrace fashion and beauty that I’d never had before. Thanks to your unending creativity, inspirations, colourful-ness, and genuine love of the world, I was able to take the first steps into doing something that could be a whole new chapter in my life.

I look forward to the next year, five years, ten years here at the blog. As long as you stay true to yourself, I’ll always be proud to count you as my “first”. :3 <3

  • Lola says:

I seem to start all these comments with “Oh Deere/dear” and even though that’s funny I would like to say:

    HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!
I remember the old limecrime site ^^ where I used to dream about wearing one of your outfits :) But it was, of course the make up tutorials that made me come back time after time.
And then, one day it was all gone. It was the Doe Deere of music that entered the stage and even though I felt happy for you I was a little sad to loose it all.

But then came the new era. The Doe Deere Blogazine! A wonderful world with the most colorful atmosphere I have ever experienced. Filled with glee and beauty and a brain behind it. It was like putting a magnifying glass on the things I liked the most about the old site.

I am not old. I have still a part to play in life and you have been there as an inspiration for many years now. Not just this last one.
Recently I have started to come across other young bloggers such as gala darling and others. But to me, you will always be the original. And you are proof that dreams come true. And sometimes, that is all you need.

My only wish is that you keep up the good work and rub of a little of that sparkling thing you have going on on us mortals. ;)
And please! Invent the perfect apple green nailpolish. I can never seem to find it.

  • carly says:

    Happy Birthday Doe Deer Blogazine!
I am a new comer i first discovered lime crime (wowza) then started reading your blog, i honestly wouldnt change anything about it! i love reading it-i love the photos, but most of all i love how it has inspired me to really embrace my own individuality- i havent worn a singe item of “safe/boring” clothing since i started reading (and i dont plan to ever again!)
Keep up the awsome work Xenia! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • anissa says:

For me its the makeup tutorials and photography, the outfits, that sort of thing. I’d love to see more of the process – how you decide to put things together, what raw materials you’ve got on hand (oh yes, show us the closet! the makeup stash! all of it!). Having done a lot of over-the-top costuming and evening wear, I know that when the end result is dazzling, it can overwhelm people who want to know how. For me, it is the insane disarray of a spare room covered in bits of feathers, rhinestones, ribbons, hats and clothing…that’s where the magic happens! So I’d obviously love to see your fashion/hair/makeup alchemist’s workshop too.

  • Sara says:

    Yahoo! Happy Birthday Doe-Deere Blogazine!

My favorite things you post are your fantastic makeup tutorials. Before I started reading your tuts, it was black cats-eye and one color of shadow, every single day! Now I am always trying new things, testing new colors, and always stocking up on LC to expand my creativity :3 I also love your feminist-geared articles. They’re empowering and thought-provoking :D

  • EveryGirl says:

My favorite thing about your blog is that it brings me a little spark of joy every day. It has been a very stressful and hard time for me at work the last six months or so, and if I’m feeling down I have a few select places to escape to.

Doe-Deere Blogazine is one of those places, it gives me inspiration and allows me to forget all the messy office politics that make my job suck, and reminds me of the things that made me love being a designer in the first place, such as great photography, inpiring ideals, drive, determination, hot topics, fashion, alternative ideas and most of all COLOUR!

  • Andrea says:

Aw, it’s already one year old! Happy Birthday, deer/dear Blogazine!

Even if my comments are very, very rare, I was there from the beginning… reading and appreciate everything.
    Actually I followed your career pretty early… since I was 17 or 18 (2005/2006), so I’m one of the ‘oldies’, I think… ^^

I love your blog because it’s so colorful and a great inspiration! It always makes me smile to see another new entry.

Please keep being fresh, positive and remain true to yourself :)

  • Bronwyn says:

    Happy Birthday Blogazine! :]

I’ve been following your blog since the beginning and love how personal you are, you’re never afraid to share how you feel about anything from fashion to events in the world. It’s helped me be more confident and comfortable with my opinions. But, I would love to see more tutorials, your makeup ideas inspire me to be more creative, and there haven’t been as many lately.

Keep blogging, and being yourself, you’re teaching so many other people how to that way!

  • Becky says:

Happy 1st birthday to you! <3 Here's to many more to come.

What I love about this blog is the undying positivity, exciting tales and the fabulous aesthetic appeal – rainbow hues, fun photos and gorgeous images everywhere! Definitely one of those blogs which brings a squeal of delight upon every new entry from my Blogger Dashboard. :)

  • Lys says:

    Happy blog Birthday!

When I first came to this blog, it was because someone was talking about how my makeup style was similar to styles they had seen here, and I should check it out for inspiration. By time I looked your makeup line was just blossoming! That was what first attracted me to this little spot in the woods.
As I read on and the blog grew, I really enjoyed taking a peak into your life. The eclectic home, style and happy attitude all really connected with me. Though always ridiculed back in high school, I felt that I was much like yourself. So I guess it’s safe to say I felt at home with the openness of the blog and the GLEE!!! moments mixed with some vintage, candyfuture and bright stylistic flair.

As Doe Deere blogazine grows, I find myself looking forward not only to the makeup, but the inside peaks at other people’s inner workings. There are such great topics being discussed here, you’re right! Maybe a weekly question with an end of the week recap about what the comments said would be fun. Whether it’s about clothing trends or more serious topics about memories or the ways of the world. I guess each week can have a theme in which your Ask Doe, makeup tuts & looks, inspiration and discussions, articles and questions all have the same theme would be fun.

I just want to finish off saying that this blog is so much fun and I love looking through posts again and again. I leave now with the thought that I have to go to a friend’s house in a few and I can’t wait to get dressed up and put makeup on and have fun, fantasy, dreamy and even serious conversations with my friends.
This blog is totally real life and so much fun. Happy 1 year and hopefully we will continue to see and hear much more from you!

  • SuperNothing says:

Hmmmm what do i love most about DoeDeere?

    The surprises.
    The variety.
The fact that I never get bored whenever I click onto my DoeDeer bookmark.

You cover so many different things, you explore EVERYTHING. I get dazzled by new fashion looks, increasingly bright makeup, and new ideas and topics to make me think. The Deer Doe section is amazing. The fact that you take time out to help us all out with our conundrums and queries is wonderful :)

But my absolute faveourite, love-it-in-the-face, cannot-live-without-it sections have to be your tutorials! I’ve learnt so many new looks from this site, and gained the confidence to go out there with bigger bolder looks then I thought I could :D True I get the funny looks but who cares! I am so happy to be able to prance around with neon sparkles all over ym eyes and lips :D

Thank you so much for a year of utter inspiration! Heres to the next :D
    xx

Happy birthday!!!! Well…. BLOGGING birthday anyway!

Its hard to pinpoint what I like the most about your blog, but… I’ll try my hardest.

I started reading your blog a couple of months back, in fact I’m not even really sure how I found it, but the important part was that I did. I was so happy to see someone that like me, isn’t afraid to have fun with her makeup or try to take the boring “natural makeup” way out. And at first, I’ll admit, that was the only reason I read your blog: tutorials. But I kept reading and reading and reading and I ended up catching myself up on all your backlogged blogs in 2 days. 2 DAYS! Anyway, needless to say, since then I’ve been an avid follower who certainly wants to be like you when she “grows up”. I love everything about your blog, its nice to see a happy, upbeat, imaginative blog in the sea of bad ones out there, in fact I was so happy about it I’m pretty sure I got my mom hooked on them too haha. The one thing I would LOVE to see from you in the future is, similar to your glee posts, your favorite things that inspire who you are today. You know, like childhood movies, songs you grew up listening to, music you always liked… something like that. I think it would be fun to see. Anyway, congrats again on your blog-a-versary!!

    xoxoxoxox
    Love always,
    Ashlotte

Hi Miss Deere! Congratulations! I remember finding your blog around Halloween and being amazed by your Barbarella makeup and overall costume. And since then, there’s been no going back! My favourite posts are probably ones showing looks, I love how colourful and flawless they are. And of course they are an inspiration! I also like seeing your costumes, or mainly the photos because they’re so good! And last but not least, the passion you put into writing and how you commit yourself to the readers, be it by giving advice, cheering us up and waht not. I hope the following Doe Deere years are as GLEEFUL as this one’s been! :)

  • Abbey says:

happy birthday! i love everythign about this site, truely. its helped me, inspired me, and many more things. i would love to see more outfit posts, makeup tutorials, and most of all, clothing tutorials! like for that lovely tulle skirt of yours :P and all the other things you make and alter. congrats!

  • Mei says:

This colorful blog is full of inspiration! I love how I can stop by and learn about bras one day, and the next see a gorgeous array of colors in make-up or outfit form that I didn’t realize looked luscious together! I would like to see more outfits and more make-up, as they really get the creative juices flowing, and get me thinking “How can I further sass up my style??” I’m always interested in learning more about the creative process behind limecrime and how to be a strong, motivated woman. This blog is a great display of the line where dream and reality unify.

  • Michelle says:

Yay Xenia! Congratulations! I really love seeing your looks, and I would love to see more day-to-day things that you wear (since it seems that we mostly just see party-wear and etc.). I would absolutely LOVE to see more articles along the lines of the “what do you think about not taking your husband’s last name?” one, because you are such a great role model and I think it does young girls a lot of good to hear out-of-the-norm opinions on things like that!

Thanks for being lots of fun, Xenia! :)

  • Luxferra says:

    Happy blog birthday!

My favorite part happens to be both the photography and the fact that you are uniquely you.

what I love love love about this site is that no matter what my mood is when I log on, it always makes me happy! I don’t know if it’s the colors, the pep, or just the all-over spunkyness and loving life that you convey in my posts, but sure as night and day, your blog ALWAYS makes me smile. congratulations on one year!! :)

  • jeremy says:

what i love the most about the blog is the fact that you actually care about people. alot of other blogs out there are just peoples opinions, they dont care about their readers. you do. and on top of that the material is always fresh, and it pertains to real life in an exciting way. i also think youre an inspiration. you get what you want by working hard and giving it your all. youve honestly inspired me to dress the way i want and do what I want to do.

i apologize for this not being the most eloquent comment ever, im a bit rushed haha.

congratulations on your success darling =]

  • Allie says:

    Happy birthday! :)

I must say, there’s not much that I don’t love about this blogazine. It’s always so optimistic, empowering, and, of course, unbelievably adorable. I’m a particular fan of your makeup tutorials. You’re an incredible artist, and your talent is extremely inspiring.

I really liked getting to see some of the process behind your lovely futuristic unicorn costume, and it’d be nice to see more things like that on your blogazine. Maybe you could even do DIY clothing tutorials, like your makeup tutorials!

Thank you for being such an inspiration for this young woman. ;)

Happy Birthday to the Doe Deere Blogazine!!! Congrats on your first year. That’s really cool. I’ve been following your blog, not quite for a year, but almost, and I completely love it. It’s by far my favorite blog to read and I try to come to the website every day.

What I love about this blog is that you are such a bright and colorful person with so many brilliant ideas, your blog makes everyday special. I always have something to look forward to when I come on the computer. I love the make-up tutorials and when you write about new and fascinating things that you come across in your life. I just love learning about new things. Congrats again Doe and I’m sure this year will be filled with even more glee than last year!! Love Ya!! =)

  • Karen B says:

There are so many things I love about this blog. I love that it provides me not only with heaps of glee and cheerfulness and COLOUR but also with interesting and well thought-out articles. It’s the combination of make-up and fashion and all things sparkly and bubbly with the more serious topics that make me come back every time :)

  • Lani says:

Wow! A whole year! Congratulations :)

I stumbled across this site looking at makeup tutorials and immediately fell in love. The rainbows! The glitter! The delicious shades of eyeshadow! My glee-meter skyrocketed! Your blogazine is such a wonderful feel-good all rounder. I love that you give heartwarming and comforting advice, gorgeous tutorials and document your adventures in NYC for people who aren’t lucky enough to live in such an amazing place to go googly-eyed at. I’m a big fan of your style – I’ve been dyeing my hair red for years and was considering going back to my natural colour, but after discovering your blog I can’t bear to! You’ve renewed my love for red hair and that in itself is worth commending :)
Your blog is inspiring and I really feel that you are relatable as a writer, which is so important! There is never a sense of high-and-mightiness, I think most readers feel like they can be or are at least a bit like you.
Thank you for taking the time to create this wonderful blog and for the ongoing work in making it so delightful for us! Big thumbs up to your make up range, can’t wait to see what else you come up with. I live in New Zealand and I love owning gorgeous glittery eyeshadow no one else has! Here’s to another year!

  • Maggie says:

    Happy Birthday!

What I love about Doe Deere Blogazine is that you encourage young women to be who they want to be. You share advice with girls who are afraid to express themselves through makeup and fashion, and inspire courage that allows them to love themselves just the way they are. Each and every post on this blog shares dreams and stories that inspire imagination in everyone that reads them.

Something that I would be interested in hearing your opinion on is current events. For instance, how can a girl still be stylish and unique in this economic downturn? Secondhand stores, hand-me-downs, or just sales? Any less expensive places to buy clothes, makeup and accessories that you would recommend? I would also like to hear more about feminist issues. I can tell from a lot of your posts that you have very strong views concerning woman’s role in modern society.

Thanks for everything you’ve done through your blog! “)

  • Katelyn says:

Congratulations Doe, happy 1 year anniversary! It’s a great blogazine, I try to read every article you publish.

What I personally like best, is watching you flourish and grow each post! You’re a dedicated blogger and have a great line of makeup. I’m sure this next year will be even better!

  • Mai says:

What I like most is probably the varied amount of topics that are posted on your blog. It isn’t just about makeup or beauty, it’s more than that and it’s really quite nice.

  • Anastasia says:

A very happy unbirthday to you!

The reason I love your blogazine so much is because of your attitude, the way you express yourself, and my love for the whole candyfuture universe you create. Who doesn’t need an extra dollop of glee in their day?

The feature I love the most would be your wonderful tutorials and inspirational looks – since I’m a brights fan, they’re pretty much the only tutorials I’m interested in trying, and a wonderful change from so many neutral brown looks which all look the same.

Way to bring more colour in the world :]

  • Roxie says:

    WHAT?!!!

  • Kate & Zena says:

    Happy Anniversary, Doe Deere!

~What do you love about this blogazine?

I love how you address a wide variety of issues, your fashion sense and the beauty tutorials. There’s very rarely anything I do not like on this site. You’re a rare gem in a sea of mediocre blogazines and magazines. You are always honest and upfront. I admire that even you don’t always know the answer and admit it (like the recent Dear Doe) unlike so many other magazines/blogazines out there. It’s so colorful too!

~What would you like to see more of?

Beauty tutorials and DIY (with instructions, please!!!).

~Is there a particular subject you’d like to see me cover in the future?

Hm, this is hard. I don’t know actually. Building a good wardrobe, perhaps?

  • Chrissy says:

The thing I love most about your blog is that it inspires me to be the best glittery, uniquely gleefull person possible. Congratulations and Happy Birthday!
