On Sunday I went ice-skating with my mom. Originally we were going to go to the Rockefeller Center rink but ended up going to the one in Prospect Park, Brooklyn (much closer and less crowded). If you ever go, there is a parking lot right by the rink – we didn’t know and ended up looking for parking on the street. Could have saved us a lot of time!

You should be dancing, yeah! (they kept playing disco & soul through the speakers!)
This is what happens when we don’t try to coordinate outfits, haha. I wore my vintage 70s coat (it’s very thick, i.e. perfect for falling on your butt!) and pleather pants, and mom wore her yellow vest and even had a hair band (!) on her! I didn’t notice how both of us referenced the 70s until I started to edit the pictures. The vintage effect was in order. :)

Cause ice-skating is just not fun without a CAT MASK!
I used to take ice-skating classes back in Russia, when I was 6. I quit because I ended up doing music instead, but at least now I know how to keep balance on two sharp blades on ice! I even remembered how to go backwards without killing people, haha. Mark on the other hand had never been on skates or even roller-blades! He is one of those people you’ll see stumbling around the perimeter, holding on to the rail. Awww. :) He didn’t skate this time because his toe is still not completely healed (he broke it a month ago in a work-out accident).

Resting my feet
If you don’t skate regularly, your ankles will hurt because they are not used to the tight grip of the skates. Of course, gliding on ice is too much fun to notice the discomfort!!
A few more pictures on Lime Crime Flickr.
Deerlings: do you know how to skate?

I LOVE ice skating and I think i’m pretty good. I want to skate on a actual frozen lake somewhere! or just anywhere in a pretty outdoor setting. The ice rink here is grotty
HA! Skating and I are not great companions, I end up either with a twisted ankle or a sore bottom >.> I preffer to glide on water when I swim, its so relaxing.
I LOVE ice skating. I used to skate as a small child (my aunt had a lake behind her house so my mom took me there to skate) but I just started skating again last year because my city has an outdoor ice rink downtown and it’s only a few minutes from my house. I was very rusty when I started skating again (holding on to rail for most of first time) but I improved the more I went and I only fell once. I plan on buying my own skates since I love it so much and it’s great exercise. I actually plan on going skating this weekend.
Hi Doe! I’m from Wisconsin and over winter break I visited my friend from college who lives in Brooklyn and we went skating there too! It looks like you had fun, I know I definitely did. We were dancing to the disco music that they were playing all day too. ^_^
Really cute pictures. Your mom is so pretty!!! Looks like a blast..
Heeee, I absolutely love iceskating! Every Christmas there’s an outdoor icerink – my friend and I were skating last year and I was laughing at him because he kept falling over. (Yes, I’m aware that wasn’t the nicest thing to do!) Towards the end of the session I got a little too carried away with speed skating, and because my skates were loose I ended up falling over, almost knocking myself out and really hurting my knee in the process!
Karma! Whoops :) I had the biggest bruise for ages, and was lucky to have not shattered my kneecap, I’ve been told.
Great pictures, too :)
I love ice skating- there’s a pond near my house that freezes in the winter!
You bothed looked adorable. I love your coat and glasses.
That last photo of you is very pretty.
♥Darla
Makes me wanna go iceskating!!! :))
Do I skate? I’m Canadian so the short answer is, yes of course.
The longer answer is that I used to when I was a kid, but gave it up in favour of horse back riding. I can still put on a pair of skates and not fall on butt too much, but my ten year old sister who plays ringette (similar to hockey but geared more towards girls) can now skate circles around me. Oh well :)
Looks like you had an awesome time, often my mum and I end up wearing similar colours & outfits to XD
Your mom looks so cute and you look insane ha ha I LOVE it! Your hair, lips and coat actually remind me more of the 60′s, if those had been cat-eye eyeglasses it definately would have been (just with pants from the future;D)
I wish I’d learned to ice scate, i’ve only been 2x and didn’t lean much but balance. Now the last rink in town has closed down, Not many places to ice scate in the desert. I can roller scate pretty well, on the other hand. I’ve never rollerbladed. When all the other kids had new roller blades I couldn’t afford them (even though i was no poorer: i suppose their parents thought credit cards were magical). I had the most adorable pair of used white roller scates with pink wheels! <3 I loved them and loved to scate but I grew out of them and eventually the rink by my house closed down and I've never been that inclined to drive across town and rent shoes, maybe if I had friends who would go willingly…
Oh and when I turned 12 I had a birthday party at a roller scating rink, so much fun!
Where oh where did you find the cat sunglasses? (I’m an okay speed skater.)
I’ve actually never gone ice skating before. So I don’t really know the feeling of gliding on ice. Not to mention I’m actually a bit too scared to try. The blades on the shoes worry me. I’m too scared of toppling over and cutting myself or someone else, or even someone else cutting me by accident. I know it’s not likely to happen, but I still get a bit jittery over it.
Skating is fun! I haven’t done it in ages, though. Your mom looks so lovely.
I love skating! I can’t remember a time I didn’t know how, because my father is big on hockey and must have taught me when I was very young. I only usually get a chance to go once a year though, which bums me out but at least I get to enjoy it that much more every time.
I love skating, but haven’t gone in a long time! My skates are even too small, so I need new ones. :( Can’t wait ’til I do get some though, or at least until the weather gets nicer and I can break out the rollerblades (though I desperately want roller skates.. Mmm..).
LOVE the cat glasses too. :)
You’re feet hurt when you ice skate? Are you sure you aren’t lacing them too tight? No part of your foot should really hurt unless they’re brand-spanking new skates and they haven’t been broken in OR you have really weak ankles.
I gripped the side of the ice rink my first time skating. I got used to skating pretty quickly.
OMG I can’t get over that coat of your its so amazing and so Vivienne Westwood :) haha the sunglasses are too adorable!
Much love always,
Glendy
oh Sorry to hear about Mark, i hope he gets back on his feet soon!
good for you, love, i don’t know how to skate at all. i was always a bike girl. when i was 16 i went to visit my brother and sister-in-law in Virginia, and 2 days before i left she took me to a rollerskating rink!! i was scared to death but then i thought, “how hard could it be?” well, i’ll never underestimate something like that again. i was stumbling and flapping about like a wild ragdoll on skates. i was burned out and bruised by the end of the night but i was happy i tried. and my sis got alot of memorable laughs at my expense!
also love the cat eyes!! gotta love girlprops!!
i have always wanted to ice skate but i still haven’t had the chance to. i love to rollar blade though. it’s so relaxing to me and it’s a great way to clear my mind and think about alot thats going on. i haven’t rollar bladed in a year or two though and i’ve been begging my mom for months to take me but she still hasn’t =[
Hey Doe, great outfit!
I just had to show you this womderful deviation on DeviantArt, it’s positivley gleeful!!

I LOVE roller skating and have been a part of a local women’s roller derby league for 2 years now :)
In Finland we learn how to skate in school PE lessons. So yes, I know how to skate. And I love it! Near my home we have free outdoors skating place, and I love to go there at nigh when its dark and pretty and we can skate fith my friends in peace.
I am absolutely hopeless at ice skating (I’m a wall hugger), but my little sister is amazing. It just so happens that right now she and my parents are in Boston for the week because she has a synchro skating competition. I’m so proud of her! :]
I have the same cat glasses ^_^
Of course! It seems in Canada, knowing how to skate is as popular as knowing how to ride a bike! Every school I went to had a skating rink in winter, and besides, what else is a kid to do during the long Canadian winters? I’m better at skiing though, that’s for sure.
Believe it or not, for a born and bred Floridian, I actually do know how to skate. Not very well, mind you. I still can’t go backwards very far without ending on my butt, but I can move forward easily and I love racing around the track (especially on smooth, clean ice).
You and your mom are too flipping cute!!!
I love Prospect Park!!
I’ve only been there a few times.
I’m digging your coat.
I’ve been looking at a few at T&V on St. Marks.
Any CHEAPER places to get one that you know of!!?!?!
Peace Love && Lipstick

i live in canada so it pretty much comes with the territory that you know how to skate. i’ve been skating since i was about 5. I learned on a friends back yard skating rink holding on for dear life to a wooden high chair. Since then I’ve skated on ponds, played hockey with the boys at the local park rink, and even one winter in our backyard when freezing rain left a sheet of ice. I also usually go to the Rideau canal(the worlds longest skating rink) every year a couple times to skate since it’s a 10 minute drive away. My dad who grew up in the states never has learned to skate and every year come winter I always ask him if this year he’s going to learn and everry time he says,”i don’t think so”. But, he’ only 67 so i’ve got a little more time to bug him.
I love ice skating! This post made me all nostalgic for when I was a kid in Connecticut and my parents would take me to the skating rink for lessons. I never went very far skill-wise, but now I’m wondering if there’s a rink out here I could practice on.
You and your mom are adorable in your matching-ness!
I’ve never been ice skating though I would like to. Our local mall sometimes has a fake ice skating arena in the winter. I do howver love roller skating through the park next door…
I’m not a great skater, but I can have a good time without holding onto the railing or falling down :) I don’t go very often, but once in awhile. Before Christmas my boyfriend and I went skating in the rink in Union Square, San Francisco.. now that was a harrowing experience, haha ;) It was soooo crowded with people and tons of little children bumbling around pell-mell, I think it’s a miracle nobody got hurt, haha.
I’ve dome some ice-skating, but I’m not the best. It’s fun though!
i LOVEEE SKATING! even when im falling :)
i have a pair of my own skates so in the wintertime i always go skating in bryant park 4 free ^__^
Wow i couldn’t help noticing how much you look like your mother :D
I look alot like my dad.
But I must admit I dont know how to skate :/
I have those same glasses! Aren’t they awesome?
Looks like you guys had fun :)
once a week i use a roller skate as my exercise .`;
This post is so old, but I just needed to comment! I LOVE skating! I was in a figure skating class for a little while when I was really young, then I played ringette (which is a sport kind of like hockey) when I was in junior high! In the summer, I try to rollerblade as much as possible. It’s not the same (and the falls are so much more painful!) but I just love the push-and-glide feeling! So much fun! One of my goals is to find an retro-style roller rink and learn to roller skate!
