Tales of the Unicorn Queen

*Contest Closed*

Congratulations, Mary! (Comment #80)

Girl Props store in Soho, NYC

Girl Props is one of my favorite places to do my accessory shopping! This zebra-striped heaven is an endless supply of all things pink, plastic and fun! The best part is that Girl Props is extremely reasonably priced, resulting in some serious shopping sprees for me.

On our last Day of Magic, one lucky person will be awarded a shopping spree at Girl Props – with me as your personal assistant!!! I will be meeting you up in Manhattan for dessert and then taking you to shop till you drop! (Trip will be videotaped and posted on this blog.)

Because Girl Props store is located in NYC, this contest is limited to those who can physically be here in January 2010 (date is to be negotiated with the winner).

To enter, tell us: what is your favorite accessory of the moment and why? My favorite is this lamb brooch from Girl Props, which looks darling against my pink coat. I adore it because I luuurve sheep!!!

The most awesome thing you’ve ever seen or what??

You have 24 hours to submit your answers – comments only please! Winner will be picked randomly and contacted by email. For those of you who cannot participate, don’t worry – Girl Props have an awesome website chock-full of inexpensive goodies, which ships worldwide! I won’t be your personal shopping assistant but hey. ;)

My black velvet “mini shopping bag” purse. I sewed velcro along the top of a simple purse, then started buying different kinds of trim by the yard. Now my bag can be trimmed in red or black or pink marabou feathers, or a fancy strand of red pompoms, or a fringe of gold tassels. With simple red ribbon and a hand-tied bow, its oh-so-preppy. Or pin a large vintage rhinestone brooch to the front for extra retro-glam sparkle. Its the best idea I ever had! I’m getting miles and miles of use from a simple, elegant bag and tons of compliments.

I love my Burberry plaid HEAD SCARF! I started wearing it like bunny ears from Louis Vuitton’s collection fall 2009

I SO hope I win, it would be perfect! I’m going to NY in January for the last week of Winter break. It would be amazing…

  • Flor says:

    Good question!!
Right at the moment, rings in general! I love rings, especially big and flashy ones… But I also adore a golden belt I recently got to use with my golden ballet flats… And I’ve used it with almost every item of my closet!!

  • Diana says:

My favorite accessory is my tree choker. Which is basically a silver charm with a tree cutout in the middle which I have attached to a piece of brown string. I tie it around my neck and I almost never take it off. I just love it and I feel naked when I’m not wearing it.

  • Ilyana says:

i’ve been wearing my moms old necklaces and rings from the 70′s and i’m in love with them. it’s a lot of opal, and silver, and i love the boho style it adds to all of my outfits!

  • Ruth says:

Quite unfair to say there were 5 giveaways when only certain people could enter this one.

  • Gertie says:

Crowns. My favorite accessory at the moment is a form of a crown on my head…It really started a couple of weeks ago when my mom and I were making wreaths. She had this gold one that looked like a crown and I stuck it on my head. Since then…I’ve been wearing crowns…

  • Gabbi says:

I’m really in love with watch necklaces right now. Often, they’re so ornate and vintage-y, and I’m a sucker for anything vintage.

    The pocket watch necklace: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&navAction=jump&id=13570643&search=true&isProduct=true&parentid=SEARCH+RESULTS&color=70

and the Cuckoo clock necklace: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=17427584&navAction=jump&isProduct=true&parentid=MORE%20IDEAS&isProduct=true&cross-sell=true&guide-bn=true

from urban outfitters really strike my fancy.

  • Bianca says:

My wolf purse! I have a lot of favorite accessories, but this one takes the cake:

It makes me so happy when I wear it! It’s like my sidekick. It gets a lot of good reactions too!

  • Kim says:

My favorite accessory right now are my leather fingerless gloves from Bebe in fuschia. They look awesome with my pink Betseyville purse, and were EXTREMELY hard to find. I had to call a Bebe store in Las Vegas to have them shipped to me! I wear them everyday and they are soft as butter.

  • Alex says:

My current favorite accessory is one I made myself: a black fleece hat. It isn’t anything fancy, but with the current temperatures I’ve been wearing it everywhere.

  • Paige says:

My mock LV bunny ears! Couldn’t afford the real thing, so I made myself a pair :)

I’m so lucky I’ll be near New York!

  • Reeca says:

    My tartan heels!

  • sarah says:

My most favorite accesory of the moment is headhear. It doesn’t have to be just hats. I love tiaras, and have been sporting a plastic, hot pink one lately from Hot Topic. I also love mini tophats- which are also from Hot Topic. I feel that it gives a sense of one’s personal style. It really brings it out. And I absolutely love GirlProps! Very reasonably priced,as you said. They had an amazingly cute pair of earrings of a girl and boy kissing- I wonder if they still have ‘em. And there you have it- my favorite accesory and the moment. =]

  • JK says:

The first time I saw a Girl Props store I thought it was a sex toy store.

  • Ashley says:

  • Jessica says:

My favorite accessory is a pair of aurora borealis snowboarding goggles. I don’t snowboard, but they make any outfit look super fresh.

  • Meru says:

I think my favourite accessory these days is my scarf. It’s the exact colour of my hair! :) The prettiest turquoise.

  • Florencia says:

my favorite accessory of the moment is my rainbow colored, sequin covered beret. it goes with everything… i absolutely love it… gives the cutest touch to any outfit

  • Kim says:

My favorite accessory is actually a necklace my boyfriend gave me last year. It is a silver angel wing with iridescent swaroski crystals in it. It’s girly, it’s a wing (I’m a real wing addict.) and litterally sparkles as soon as light catches it! Here’s a picture, the only problem is that it always shows pure white due to the flash haha. http://tiny.cc/qGnIu

  • Kris says:

My favorite accessory of the moment is a toque my friend knit for me as a secret santa gift. It’s a mix of brown and beige wool with no specific pattern, and somewhat slouchy. I’m absolutely in love with it and can’t believe she spent 8 hours making it for me :) I only received in yesterday, so I have yet to fully rock it, but it’s cold enough outside for me to get tons of use out of it.

  • Lady Lilith says:

Ok, so this is easily the best excuse I could think of to go visit NYC!
My favorite accessory of the moment is easily my new legwarmers I ordered to kick off the start of my winter break! They look fantastic with different layers of socks, and, well, they’re REALLY warm (who would have thought? haha).

The only time I’ve taken them off is to sleep in the past 3 days. Love much!

  • Cat says:

Currently my favorite accessory is the tiniest purse I’ve ever seen. I think it’s Dooney and Burke, but I can’t be sure because it’s too small for a label. I love it because I’ve always been minimalist about going out; I only need to carry my keys, phone, wallet and chapstick. It also helps that it was only $2.75!

  • my dragon ring,it hasnt left my hand sence igot it for my bday 3 years ago ,it came in dragon jewlery box, which in it self it a stament on my shelf, its bright magenta covered in glitter and a gold heart banded clasp, most deff thee best bday gift ever

  • Spooky Variety says:

    Spooky Variety Reply:

Oh, and my favorite accessory right now is probably… My bright blue rocket ship earring!

  • Maggie says:

My fave is actually a rally simple black and silver stud bracelet from H&M! Is bought it 6 months ago, not really liking or wearing it… but now I’ve had it on every day for nearly 2 weeks. Crazy!

  • Toni Ellen says:

My current favourite accessory would be my Edward Gorey Bat necklace. I adore Halloween and I love when I can find cute accessories that blend in every other day of the year but still convey my love for that oh-so awesome holiday. I will even be wearing it on Christmas! It’s so simple and can go with anything! :D
Let’s not forget just how awesome Edward Gorey is as an artist! I love his style and I am glad I found this super nifty reproduction of one his etchings! <3

  • Mary says:

You are going to think this is crazy but my favorite accessory is my hair. It’s very thick & resilient so I dye it whenever the moment strikes me. Since July it’s been blonde, blonde with pink, various shades of brown & auburn & now brown with blonde streaks. Plus I just had my hair stylist sister chop a bunch of it off & now I’m rocking an assymetrical Rihanna/Megan Mullally inspired cut. You can view all of my recent styles by checking out my Daily Mugshot pics to see what I mean.

  • Tosha says:

I can’t win this because I can’t afford to fly to NYC, but, my favorite accessory is a hand-carved coral ring that I bought in Italy in 2008. Italy has always been my dream location. Its history, its mythology, its geography…it’s fascinating. I was able to visit there my senior year with a group of kids from my Latin class, and we visited a shop where an old man hand-carves cameos out of shells and coral and turquoise. I bought a ring with an orange coral piece, surrounded by some type of filigree, and I haven’t taken it off since. It’s even left an indention on my finger from my fingers swelling during sleep!
Wearing it reminds me of how complete and infinite I felt during the two short weeks I spent in Italy. It gives me a determination to live there one day, and explore all of the history and ruins.

  • Denise says:

I love all accessories. My favs are huge rings and oversized necklaces. they can make even a plain black outfit look fab. The brighter and sparklier the better!!!

  • Corinne says:

a long string of black freshwater pearls from the Philippines. It’s so long that it can be worn as a double strand or a single strand down to my waist. It can also be tied in a knot, for more variety. It’s become my signature accessory (previous one was a yellow/pink/white freshwater pearl string). They are irregular pearls, considered the ‘throwaways’. The approximate USD value was under $20 when I got them late last year. It’s been my staple go-to accessory to dress up, or even dress DOWN any outfit. To me, each pearl has its own personality, which makes every time I wear it a new adventure!

  • Mandee says:

I’m absolutely in love with giant elaborate necklaces. Especially ones with huge bows and tons of chains, with flowers, anything!

  • Shea Wheatley says:

Gloves. I love them far too much! I have a good sized collection, and I’m furious as I wound up ruining my favorite pair walking through the New York City rain. So, I’m in the market for a new pair.
But seriously, I love them. Leather, lace, velvet, any type of glove, they don’t even have to have the fingers! It’s fun to match them with your outfits, and it’s one of the things I love about winter: I don’t feel like a crazy person wearing them! Plus, there’s just something so classy about wearing a nice pair. You can’t go wrong, really.

  • Tee says:

Ahhhhh Girlprops!!! Love them so much. Definitely on my hit list whenever I make it up to NYC…hopefully will have a reason to go in January! :P

Right now it would have to be my purple penguin necklace. Consisting of six lilac penguins strung on a silver chain, it looks so classy from far away but inevitably causes a double take from anyone who gets close enough!

  • Adrianna Papillon says:

My favorite accessory is my Claddagh ring. It was a birthday present from someone I consider my older sister. She remembered that I wanted one and found one that was actually made in Ireland! A Claddagh ring is two hands holding a crowned heart. The hands are for friendship, the heart for love, and the crown for loyalty. It’s a beautiful ring, and the meaning behind it is far more special.

  • Briana says:

My favorite accessories right now are earrings and little bowties!
i have studs, chandelier earrings, clip ons from the 80′s and a bunch of other ones.
i’ve been putting a lot of little bows in my hair and on my jackets <3

  • maureen says:

my favorite accessory right now is the fluffy muppet scarf my sister made for me :)

  • Leica says:

My fave accessory would be my silver (aluminum, most likely) ring with a glittery baby pink heart given to me by the first boy who kissed me. He’d gotten it from a cereal box. Special because that happened when I was eight– I’m 27 now.

Oh… and I just wanted to comment. I don’t live in the US so just pass me over. :-D

  • Amber Cooper says:

I LOVE my Swarovski crystal barrettes and combs for my hair. ITs the perfect addition to the colorful hair I have and it keeps my hair out of my face. :D

    Amber Cooper Reply:

but I also cant enter. I wont be going to NYC til later this year. ~pout~

  • Michelle C. says:

Haha! I wanna win so bad!

  • Michelle C. says:

Haha this would be so awesome to win! My favorite accessory is my bright yellow bow with cupcakes on it that I made out of underwear haha!

  • Ty Ford says:

    http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z86/extrovertsellout/Picture144.jpg

My very favorite accessory is my antique crystal heart necklace. I am very pale (though not as pale as the beautiful Doe) and the green and pink hues that reflect from it in the sunlight tend to dance on my skin like the most retro yet candyfuturistic patterns ^-^

  • Ty Ford says:

And if that image, I am wearing Elf, by Lime Crime ^-^

  • Alison says:

I won’t be back on the east coast until mid February, so just ignore this post it that’s not ok.

My favorite accessory is a bracelet from my boyfriend. It is a bangle that hinges open and has a heart on the top of it. The heart is actually a lock though and requires a key to open. It also came with a heart charm which he had engraved for me. I wear the bracelet every single day. There is a lot of sentimental value behind the bracelet, so it means a lot to me.

  • Haley says:

My favorite accessory is a silver bracelet from my grandfather. Sadly, he passed away early this month. I wear his bracelet everyday, and it makes me feel closer to him.

    Haley Reply:

I doubt I’ll be able to be in NY in January, just wanted to share :)

  • Chylde says:

i don’t know if i missed this yet but i will try anyways.

i have 2 accessories i wear at the same time. a black and white skull cameo because i have always had a thing for cameos and a necklace my bf, zane, made me for my birthday a few years back. the necklace is kind of along the lines of the one alexis bledel wears in the movie sin city.

they look great together and are my favorite pieces for the last few years.

  • Karli says:

My absolute favorite piece of jewelry is a necklace with Frank N’ Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show on it.
(My other favorite necklace, the skull hand, is also in this picture.)

I’m in lurve with this fabulous 1970s silver owl I found abandoned at a thrift shop. It’s a giant statement piece that just barely escapes the tacky. That pretty much makes it perfect for me :-) I always feel like a 70s style icon when wearing it!
