Banner contest
Category: Fun & Games
Ooh la la! Another contest. This time it’s to showcase your graphic grace and flex your Photoshop muscle! Doe Deere Blogazine needs a new top banner, and only an intensely, densely, immensely candyfuturistic one will do!
- 760 px wide, 180 px tall
- Must fit in with the current layout stylistically
- Feel free to use any of my images here on the blog
- Post a link to your banner in the comments to this post
Winner will have their banner displayed on the blog and receive a special thank-you gift from me. Winner will be announced on August 26th. Go ahead, blow me away! :)

Isn’t the current header new and professionally made? Why another one?
Also, it’s pretty close to spec work, which is dodgy amongst designers – Tim Ferriss just got some criticism for it and he’s not the first one.

Tiara – Thank you for the informational links you posted.
I also agree that this is close to spec work…..real designers put a lot of effort into their work, and most are not willing to do any to win a prize of unidentified denomination.
I do hope some people participate, just to see what others come up with. I think the banner now is quirky & flows well with your theme. :)

I disagree about this being Spec work, I think it’s more of a bit of fun and encourages people to be creative. A cool idea in my opinion.

Awwww I love the new one though! Having said that though, I will be entering ;)
Tiara and Crystal- Spec work Schmec work! It’s a fun competition idea, and allows people like myself who, even though may not be proffessional/paid “designers”, a chance to get a bit of recognition for their creativity. I do understand the point you’re trying to make, but if people feel this is “dodgy” they don’t have to enter! Personally,I’d consider the exposure via Xenias blog, PLUS a gift from the lady herself as a pretty damn cool “payment”!

I think this is a really good idea. I wish I had some graphic designing skills so I could enter but unfortunately I don’t. :( Good luck to everyone, though! The ones that I’ve looked at so far are so good. The Simitopian, I completely agree with you. If someone feels that this is “dodgy” in any way, then don’t enter!

On Nubby Twiglet’s blog today she posted an article about spec work here if you want more info.
I am totally not bashing anyone wanting to join this contest, please don’t think that. I think that contests for young designers & people who do design for fun are a good thing. Some people do this for a living, and are less apt to participate. I do not want anyone to think I am discouraging their opinions & creativity.

On the spec point… I think it’s a fun contest for people who are not actually designers…
Besides, Doe is not making money out of it… it’s a little bit like when you make something for a friend, I guess…
She made lots of contests before that had a little bit of photography, writing…

Still…. I have no painting skills and I’m horrible with perspective!

I can always make the colors on the left side lighter if you want! As well as alter or tweak any other elements colors, but this is the basic idea and color scheme. This was a fun project!

Hi xenia!
For days I have been thinking about the banner, in my mind I saw something really colorful and shining, I tried to make my idea, I’m not totally sure if I could make my idea or no, but I hope you like it.
My idea was use soft colors but shinning at the same time, each color has a line, in the line there is a styletto, mirror and a lipstick, in my opinion this represents your personality and style. I used fonts that seem candies.
I know you like unicorn, I make some changes, now the unicorn have wings! Now it’s a Pegaso with a horn, the unicornios are going to evolve and wings will grow to them
Maybe I’m not the best, but I do the best I can, if I have time in the week I’ll try something different.

There’s a huge difference between running a contest because you’re looking to take advantage of young designers for your own benefit and running a contest to get your online community creatively involved with your website.
This contest is definitely the latter.
