Also, it’s pretty close to spec work, which is dodgy amongst designers – Tim Ferriss just got some criticism for it and he’s not the first one.

I also agree that this is close to spec work…..real designers put a lot of effort into their work, and most are not willing to do any to win a prize of unidentified denomination.
I do hope some people participate, just to see what others come up with. I think the banner now is quirky & flows well with your theme. :)

Awesome contest idea, I wish I had graphic designing skills! I took a look at the entries so far and I think you’re going to have a tough time choosing, they were awesome! =).

I disagree about this being Spec work, I think it’s more of a bit of fun and encourages people to be creative. A cool idea in my opinion.

Tiara and Crystal- Spec work Schmec work! It’s a fun competition idea, and allows people like myself who, even though may not be proffessional/paid “designers”, a chance to get a bit of recognition for their creativity. I do understand the point you’re trying to make, but if people feel this is “dodgy” they don’t have to enter! Personally,I’d consider the exposure via Xenias blog, PLUS a gift from the lady herself as a pretty damn cool “payment”!
I agree that the current banner is very cute and suits the rest of the blog well, but it will be nice for others to get a chance to shine!

can anyone provide me with some info about how to learn and produce some graphics for online use? I would really appreciate it, I don’t’ know where to start.
I think this is a really good idea. I wish I had some graphic designing skills so I could enter but unfortunately I don’t. :( Good luck to everyone, though! The ones that I’ve looked at so far are so good. The Simitopian, I completely agree with you. If someone feels that this is “dodgy” in any way, then don’t enter!

I am totally not bashing anyone wanting to join this contest, please don’t think that. I think that contests for young designers & people who do design for fun are a good thing. Some people do this for a living, and are less apt to participate. I do not want anyone to think I am discouraging their opinions & creativity.

On the spec point… I think it’s a fun contest for people who are not actually designers…
Besides, Doe is not making money out of it… it’s a little bit like when you make something for a friend, I guess…

I can always make the colors on the left side lighter if you want! As well as alter or tweak any other elements colors, but this is the basic idea and color scheme. This was a fun project!
