Britney Spears
Category: Weekly Glee
This Wednesday, I’m giving into my greatest guilty pleasure – no, not eating a whole box of Rafaello’s – seeing Britney Spears live! For 10 years I’ve been ashamed to admit my secret addiction to Britney’s spunky pop, breathy vocals and sexy dance moves. But the honest truth is, she had me from the first notes of that porno slap bass line of Hit Me Baby One More Time.
At the risk of sounding like a hyper-ventilating gay fanboy, Britney Spears is an icon. Part Michael Jackson, part Madonna, part fembot from outer space, Bit Bit is one of the few women I look up to in show business. It’s people like her and Madonna that teach us that inner strength does not lie in trying something once and giving up if it doesn’t work. It’s about the resilience, the drive to continue going in spite of past failures. I don’t care much for tabloid drama involving Britney; I simply marvel at the fact that just like a Phoenix from the ashes, this 5’4″ Southern woman gets back on her feet and does it all over again – and better than ever.

Me being obsessed with all things circus, this tour is perfect for my Live Britney de-virginizing experience. In addition to loving the record, I know it’s going to be an extreme visual candy well-worth the $175 ticket: the costumes were designed by the Canadian duo DSquared2 (love!) and are basically traditional circus costumes – think trapeze artists, clowns, jugglers – refashioned into sinister, provocative looks. Yes yes yes!
Deerlings: do you like Britney? Hate her? Worship her? Indifferent?

I am so jealouse. I would love to see her live but I had no money to spare for the ticket when my friend asked me to go. I admit been hooked since Baby, the songs bring back good memories of me and one of my friends dancing about her room. I went a bit off her music just before the whole Brit tabloid explosion, it didn’t do much for me but the new album is great. Ever see the MTV thing where they talked to her? I just wanna give the girl the biggest hug.

You are probably in for a treat, I saw her in 2001, she puts on a great show and the crowd was sooooo interesting. I am so glad she is hot again! :P

I HAD to pop out of my Google Reader to say “YAY!!!!!”…someone else loves Britney besides my 16 year old and I! We have already worn out her new cd!
SO my obvious answer would be “love her!”
HAVE FUN and come back and tell us all about it!!

At first I hated Britney when she first came out with Baby One more time… Then I came to liking her like every tween on the planet. After wards, I just lost interest, never really hating her. But now I absolutely adore her more than I ever have! She’s had it rough and I’m rooting for her to succeed. I just want to give her hug.

I liked Britney when she first came out (I was a preteen at the time, so I think I had no choice), LOVED her around the time she did Toxic, but I haven’t cared for much she’s done since then. Her current songs have been unnotable to me, dance songs that all have the same edgy provocative tone and little else going for them. The circus theme is really cool though, the concert looks great…
I’m really glad she’s back on her feet, getting out there, doing what she loves.

I love the fact that despite all of the negative media coverage she gets, she continues to perform and create. She rules =)

I wouldn’t say I’m a fan per-sé, as there’s no way I’d spend money to see her live, but I’ll dance to her tracks when I’m out!

I’m jealous too! But I live in Holland so I really can’t go to the concert. I was at her ‘Oops… I did it again tour’ but that’s like 9 years ago or something like that! Have fun!

Me and Brit go way back, and I totally wish I could see her in concert.

I just see a broken (albeit a talented entertainer) girl who has been put through the machine again and brought out once more for consumption. Does she have anything to say? Did she do serious soul searching? Probably not yet to either question. But she’s a pop star so that’s what you get. And that’s okay and I wish her all the best.

I’m surprised at how many people were actually jealous of your going to the concert. Honestly I don’t find her lyrics very original and as a guitarist am not fond of the lack of actual instruments. I’m not sure about how much of the tabloids are true, but I really don’t think she deserves to continue to be so famous. You’re right though, the costumes are kind of cool ;D

I have always loved Britney. Not because she is a good singer, or because her lyrics are thought provoking, but becasue she is a great performance artist. I love to watch her dance and see what sort of exciting outfits she is going to wear. When I buy her music, it is purely for dancing and bumping in my car, not for getting emotional and having a breakthrough of some sort( I have plenty of other music for that!)

I like some of her tracks (Toxic, Gimme More, etc) but I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of hers as I’m not sure how much of it she writes and such. Greattt for dancing though!

I don’t care much for her music – it’s not my kind of style, and when I hear it, it does not speak to my soul in any way. But then my taste is more along the lines of Within Temptation and other dark, gothic love songs or alternative rock…

Coolness, um i don’t hate her, but i’m not a fan either, I think some of her songs are ok, i like her older songs, but i never had a CD of her’s . I mean i think she has a good management team that makes her look and sound kinda good. Don’t know, but have fun , take pics.

I actually like Britney more now than when she first came out. But overall, I would say I’m indifferent to her. She’s not my kinda music, but if she makes some people happy, then so what?

She was one of the few artists that began my listening career in music. Along with N*Sync and the backstreet boys… smash mouth, etc. Now my music taste is all over the spectrum. Now-a-days I don’t listen to her as much anymore since she is linked to my high school culture (yes, there was a specific culture in my high school days) and I don’t listen to her cause I always heard her at dances and stuff like that.
She also lost my respect when she had her mid life crisis but I suppose, we all have our times like that.

I’m indifferent. Her music isn’t to my tastes, I don’t think she can sing and I don’t regard her as a good role model for young girls…but I agree that she must have a lot of strength to keep bouncing back after being knocked down so many times.
Those outfits are amazing, too.
I’m sure she’ll put on a brilliant show and I hope you have the most amazing time, Doe :)

I like Britney.
From the first hits, tho if I look back now, I really don’t like some of her videos.. (tho at the time I was crazy about them).
I envy you for the chance to go to her concert, but at the same time I wish you have a great, eh what great, gorgeous time!

To be brutally honest, I cannot stand her! I do realise she’s been through some tough times, and I applaud her for overcoming adversity…..but….no. I’m afraid I will never be a fan. When she first made it big, it really irked me that she was really playing on the whole “barely legal” vibe. I found that really tacky.
Also those photos of her driving with her baby ON HER KNEE (!!!!!) gave me cause to speculate on her intelligence…..
It did confuse me though when the media felt the need to make such a HUGE deal that she shaved her head. Wtf?!How ridiculously pathetic! She wanted to try something different! It’s just fucking HAIR!
Meh. Anyways, all that aside, different strokes for different folks, as they say; she obviously still has plenty of fans, so I’m happy for them, as they are now able to enjoy her performances once again.
I’m sure you’ll have an awesome time, and after all, that’s what really matters when it comes down to it! :)

I can’t stand her either. Not just her, I can’t stand most pop stars. Britney Spears is supposedly famous for her MUSIC, and yet I feel like that is the least of what her career is about. Her lyrics are not very original, don’t really say much about anything. I mean, the words just seem so generic that I’m not even sure if most of her songs are about anything.
http://www.metrolyrics.com/if-u-seek-amy-lyrics-britney-spears.html
Like, other than the obvious play on words, what do any of those words really mean? In addition to this, the lack of instrumentation in her music is just ridiculous. How can you call yourself a musician when you have very little to do with music? I feel like shes only famous due to all the sex appeal and drama surrounding her.
And I think the only reason I dislike her for these reasons is that there are some really TALENTED musicians out there who don’t get the recognition they deserve while she is making millions from shakin it on stage. I feel like all the dancers and whatnot she has with her at shows are to overcompensate for the lack of real entertainment she has.

I wouldn’t say that I’m a hardcore Britney fan, but I do quite enjoy her music, and can appreciate the fact that despite up and downs(quite low, those downs have been..), she does not give up, and she still puts on a great show. I can only imagine how amazing her Circus tour is, and even though I wouldn’t(or couldn’t) actually spend that much money to see her, Britney is no doubt a strong talented woman, who knows how to put on a damn good show. Have a great time!!

Britney has never really been my cup of tea, but it’s been nothing against her… just her genre of music in general (my faves include, but are not limited to, Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Isobel Campbell, and Loreena McKennitt).
I don’t know much about the gal, really, but I think she should keep on working whatever she’s got. :-)

Lucy you. this seems like an amazing tour. It seems very much like a Kylie Mingoue concert. Very much about the entertainment factor: costumes, dacning, visuals. I don’t mind if she doesn’t sing live. Coldplay sing live and they jump around alot so the singing sounds very bad.

Love ‘er – the same way I love Paris Hilton. They drive people nuts with disdain and yet they can’t stop talking about them or telling you why they are so irrelevant.
Who ever said anyone had to be relevant. Not in the same league but both are entertainers in the most satisfying way to people who love them and the people who get off on hating them. So much material there.
Works for me – have a blast ;~)

I think some years after there will be a special term describing her phenomena.
I think what happened to her was smth we all will totally realize later. There is so much her story embraces.
I feel a lot of respect to her, I think “Blackout” was a breakthrough. Right now I’m glad she’s “back from black”, but I’m not sure she is able to function ok without anyone’s control=(
Circus tour leaves a strange impression – she seems like a wound-up toy to me still( Turn the key, she will dance and sing(

i think she is an performing goddess on stage but i am still not convinced about how much of what we see is hers…she seems to be a piece of playdough to the hands of those who manage not only her carreer but her whole life!
then again…one can never know what’s really going on in someone else’s life but their own…right?

hey Kim! :)
I meant that her whole life has become a product that others designed and advertised…i dont think she knows who she is until they put her in a role they chose…
Besides…her actions off stage are not those of an independent, fierce, passsionate and talented woman. Maybe she has been a product from day one…like a second “truman show”…like a…circus…ironic.

EEEEE, I’m so excited to go to see her in person too! Only 2 weeks left!! And I adore the fact that it’s circus-themed. I don’t care much about her. I don’t care much about famous people’s lives, ’cause they are so far away from me and I have so many inspiring people near me that don’t have spotlights on their faces saying how fantastic their comeback was. Really.
I don’t hate her music, but it’s not something you’d find in my playlist…
As a human, I can’t judge much since I’ve never actually talked to her and you usually can’t trust what the media says about people, since they don’t really try to know people, just expose them.
Still, the clothes are really pretty. I might check them out for ideas.
I think she has charisma and is very good at her job. It’s always good to see someone back doing what they like to do.
But I know many people who still try hard after failures…
And I feel very inspired by them.

For the most part, I like Britney Spears. I think what happened to her over the past few years was sad, but things seem to be looking up for her, so that’s great! I never bought any of her CDs, but I did like her back in the days of “Hit Me Baby One More Time”. I used to love the video for that one song… I think it was called “Sometimes” and she was down by the beach dressed in all white. Oh, the (middle school) memories!!

I tend to be drawn more to music that makes me feel or think deeply, but that’s not to say dance music and feel-good music have no place, because they definitely do! When I need a pick-me-up, your CD is the first one that goes on in the car and I’m singing at the top of my lungs. :) But your songs still have more depth to me. Anyway, I liked her music better in the beginning of her career more than now. It’s hard for me to really respect her as a person after the baby-on-the-knee, etc. stuff. Someone can be as wild as they want to, but if it’s endangering their child, that’s another story. In a way, I feel sorry for her because she’s obviously been through a lot at a young age and hasn’t known how to process it very well, which is compounded by having to break down in the public eye. Yet we are all still responsible for our own choices in life and have to come to a point where we mature and change; hopefully, that is what she is doing now. I don’t think she’s a bad person, just maybe emotionally immature and trying to find herself and making mistakes along the way (though I don’t know her and am maybe unfair to judge). I do NOT like how she used circus animals in her video; most everyone knows nowadays the abuse that circus animals go through, and Ringling is even on trial for it, though they’re not the only ones guilty of it. But she did later agree not to use animals in her concerts, which is great. Cirque du Soleil is definitely the way to go as far as going to the circus is concerned! You get all of the magic (more so, I think) and none of the cruelty.
One thing I CAN respect is how she keeps getting back out there doing her thing regardless of what is ever said about her. That takes courage and is inspiring. And I do think you can enjoy someone’s music and keep it separate from how you feel about them as a person. Unless we’re talking about Chris Brown, and then don’t even get me started…

I used to love her and with a very guilty sick feeling still love her music.Oops I Did It Again….was my 1st C.D. But things have changed. She’s hurting animals in music videos now and I just won’t stand for that!
I know the chances that she is mentally stable are slim but how can you not see what is in front of your face? She obviously doesn’t care! This isn’t just about her. It may be HER music but a lot of people are making money off of it, people who torture animals, people who stood by and watched it happen and people handled the finances to make it happen.
When you attend this concert all of those people are profiting even if indirectly. I won’t but her C.D., I won’t put her songs on my myspace and if i had the cash I wouldn’t go to that concert whether it has elephants or not. The damage is done.
This is pretty hypocritical of someone who doesn’t test on animals and in the Lime Crime Make-up Faq is referred to as “an animal Lover”
I’m not some Peta maniac. I eat meat, when i stopped buying leather i didn’t throw away all my old leather belongings as a statement, i still use them. But where do you draw the line!?
obviously YOU don’t draw it at bullhooks!

I’m not a fan of her music. I don’t hate the girl, I don’t know her and we all know the media knows the first thing on how to make a celebrity look bad and I don’t buy into the propaganda. I think she can perform well, as I’ve seen her do during the Music Awards on TV but my music taste is along the lines of The Killers, Regina Specktor, Tori Amos, Trashcans etc. I like creative lyrics and I don’t think she has that talent.

i hate britney spears! of course, when i say this keep in mind it is in reference to her music, in which she exhibits absolutely no musically talent, and her career, which has soley been driven by her over-sexed and kinda whorish image.
i do not judge her by her life outside the music business, because everybody does stupid shit sometimes.
however, im afraid i will NEVER respect britney for the tasteless music she produces, because personally i like music with substance and lasting ability.
something more in the veins of TLC’s crazysexycool, which i still jam to everyday despite the fact that it was released like 15 years ago.
Furthermore, i HATE lipsynching.
also, i noticed that the outfits, which looked quite good on paper, looked really tacky and run-down when actually fitted on britney…maybe thats the fault of the designers??
