Candyfuture

“Stop being yourself and become who you’ve always wanted to be.” – Paulo Coelho

Persons of great imagination often build ideal worlds around them – somewhere they could be themselves, with no boundaries. Some are partial to powdered wigs of the Victorian era, others daydream of a quiet countryside; I come from a world of succulent colors, futuristic shapes, crystals & unicorns.  Like everyone else, I tried to contain that world at first for the fear of being judged or called crazy. But like liquid color, it’s been finding its way out, oozing through the cracks into my reality, until one day I finally decided not to hold back any more and let go. What happened next left me speechless. The universe I’d been confining in for so long burst forth with such fantastical force, it broke down all barriers and freed me as an artist and as a person.

What started out as a fantasy, became concrete very quickly. Candyfuture and Candyfuturism – the phenomenon referring to living out your life the way you envision it – became my life philosophy. I’m ecstatic to finally share it with others!

So, what is Candyfuturism?

Candyfuturism is a belief system where one is responsible for building their own ideal future. Candyfuture is your future. I often make an emphasis on the importance of being true to self and not caving in to pressure on this blog. For an aspiring Candyfuturist, this is only the beginning. The real challenge lies not in being rigid and resisting change, but welcoming it and bringing it about yourself. People take the future for granted and do nothing to earn it; they think it will come whether they sit or stand, rise or fall. The quality of such future is questionable. Candyfuturist understands he cannot control what’s to come but continuously moves towards his goal, thus assuring a better tomorrow.

I find architecture to be one of the most fascinating professions in the world because it involves planning, building and dreaming all at the same time. It always starts out with an idea – that tiny, silvery thread sparking through your mind – nurtured by ambition & love for what you do, it grows and develops into a concept. But that concept alone, no matter how brilliant, is not enough! It takes determination and an iron work ethic to see it to completion, perform the magic of turning immaterial into material. The Candyfuturist is an architect of his own fate: fully aware of his environment, he dreams of the bigger and better tomorrow. He decides to build it not out of escapism, but the desire to optimize and test his own ability. He takes risks because they are necessary for invention; besides, they give him a thrill. He never speaks ill of competition because without it, what would challenge him to outperform himself? The process of such creation is beautiful: full of grace and purpose, not a single move jerky or accidental. A Candyfuturist paints his future with a steady hand.

What happens when a Candyfuturist begins work on his edifice? Crowds gather around. They will gawk, spend a little too much time expressing their indifference, scrutinize the way brick is laid. They’ll try to tear him down – but he won’t notice any of it. Engrossed in his magnificent project that is his own life, Candyfuturist aims to please himself first and foremost. He does so not out of selfishness or egotism, but because he realizes that by achieving personal happiness he makes the world a happier place.

I wore this to Tarina Tarantino book signing yesterday. It was an action-packed day full of excitement – I got to meet Tarina, went on an accessory shopping spree with Gala Darling (loot post soon) and got kicked out of a cab, ran into Agyness Deyn in the East Village, and then somehow ended up at a 1920s/30s party with Shien Lee. All in this ridiculous hummingbird outfit.

Why hummingbird? The fluttery jacket makes me look like I have wings and the color palette channels some sort of an exotic bird. Also, Shien and I have a running joke about how we’re hummingbirds: we both love to eat (shun anorexia!) and hover around the table.

This is my new living room by the way. Lavender stripes forever!

See? A humming bird. In my pink kitchen.

  • Dress: unknown
  • Hummingbird jacket: vintage
  • Belt: thrifted (clear plastic with glitter!)

More detailed report coming next week!

Hello, I am Doe and I’m a crafts junkie. There, I said it. I looove making things with my hands – from jewelry to furniture – and DIY runs in my blood. And so one day I decided that I’m going to make a Unicorn outfit for an amazing photoshoot. It was partially debuted at my Fairytale Birthday Picnic, but of course that was just the beginning of its evolution.

This is how I had it before. Hand-dyed bustier with a rainbow lace bit around the top. Already pretty candyfuturistic but not quite what I was thinking yet.

This is what it looks like now. Clusters of jewels & pearls all over, things sticking out, sparkling, glowing – you get the idea! So awesome. It took forever but was well worth it.

Looks like candy and treasure at the same time :)

And then of course there are the shoes. I wanted something extra-special, magical but still futuristic. I tracked down these clear PVC shoes with silver edging and HOLOGRAPHIC SOLES!!! Can you spell GLEE??? Originally, they had small silver bows in the front but I added my own bows made out of leftover fabric from the skirt. The decoration was secured by small hairbands and thus is completely removable – I can’t imagine the situation, but if need be I could take it off and wear them with the original silver bow instead.

Aaaand – finally – the full outfit!

I illustrated a quick skirt tutorial here

The piece I’m most proud of, however, is the horn. I took the most creativity & thinking to invent something that doesn’t just look good but stays on top of your head. I made it out of a Christmas ornament and some crystals – came out pretty heavy, actually. But not heavy enough to remind you you’re wearing something on your head that protrudes 6 inches forward (I almost smashed it getting in and out of the car several times!).

I really can’t wait to shoot this, it will be brilliant! :D

Deerlings: what is your favorite DIY project you’re most proud of?

Across the rainbow-colored bridge,
Past the hills, beyond the ridge
Stands a city of post-modern fantasy,
Where everyone drinks taro bubble tea.

Star-shaped buildings astound the weary
Iridescent windows sparkly and cheery,
Crystalline doors and purple glass roofs.
On the ground spy a print of a unicorn hoof…

Ermine Square, the center of town
The colorful citizens gather around
They make magical treats at the Candy Factory
Where only delicious is satisfactory!
Every flavor is produced
From Cosmopop to Unicorn Poop!

Hop on the bubble trolley and you’ll see
Some of the local citizenry:
(They may not be what you expect -
Hold on, you ain’t seen nothing yet!)

The girl in the back is an architect
See that hologram saucer around her neck?
The boy by the window has lavender hair
And the lady with an ermine is paying her fare.

Past the Shimmering Lake down on Hologram Street
Sea horses and axolotls come out to greet;
The neon carousel now awaits -
Take a unicorn ride through outer space.

But brace yourself for an incredible twist:
This place of wonder already exists!
Candyfuture belongs to those
Who stay true to self through highs and lows.
