Tales of the Unicorn Queen

I went to an important business meeting yesterday. A buyer from a UK store was in town and wanted to see my line. When I go to these things I naturally try to represent what my brand is about, while still looking professional. This is the look I wore: simple yet striking and only took about 20 minutes!

I’m wearing China Glaze nail polishes in Bahamian Escape & Lemon Fizz

INGREDIENTS

Eyes
Prep the lids with eyeshadow primer. Pack Elf on the inner half of the eye and Mermaid on outer. Blend the two together with a round brush in circular motion. With a clean brush, blend outwards and up the lid. Apply highlighter to brow bone (optional). Put mascara on top lashes only. Define eyebrows.

Face
Moisturize skin. Apply foundation all over and set with loose powder. Give cheeks a healthy glow with peach blush.

Lips
Apply Cosmopop opaque lipstick straight from the tube. It’s a pretty peach color that provides excellent coverage, no matter how pale or tan you are. Color should last 4-5 hours with minimal touch-ups. Voila!

The meeting went great by the way. She loved Lime Crime and we’re going to be bringing it to UK in the early 2010. I’ll announce more details soon! :)

That’s great news about the whole UK situation.
BTW, I love your hair put slightly to the side!
    I think it looks darling.
Love the simplicity of this makeup,
and the nail colours complimenting it.

  • Rosie says:

Ohh, I love the eye make up! I like that it’s very sleek.

  • Alys says:

It’s always nice to see a simple tutorial that you can use in a variety of situations. Congratulations on the successful meeting!

  • Heathyre says:

    Doe,

I’m creating a website for funky socks and opening a brick and mortar location in SW Florida and would love to carry your line. Can you contact me regarding wholesale?

    Thanks a Bunch!

Will have Mark get in touch. :)

Love the simple look of the make up but your photos don’t look that great on my computer screen. I think you photoshopped them too much or didn’t spend as much time doing it because it looks like you have too much powder on one spot of your nose (especially in top photo) so it makes your nose look a bit odd.

    Doe Deere Reply:

It’s just the lighting, which was a bit harsh – direct sunlight.

    Jenn Reply:

    Way to be constructive TD.

  • Zane says:

i actually like this! i’m not sure if i could pull it off, but it’s magical on you. it has given me some ideas though!
also your nails look fabulous! that made my day.

  • Takie says:

Whoah, great news! Can’t wait for Lime Crime to be available here. Is it going to be London only or other big cities as well?

  • AmerLynn says:

Hey Doe.. I have a question.. which collection was lemon fizz from? I did find which one bahamian escape is from…

    Doe Deere Reply:

Lemon Fizz is from the new Spring 2010 collection, I just got a hold of a preview sample. :)

  • I love it!
I love your nail polish, too.

  • Rachel says:

Lime Crime coming to the UK?!?!? TELL US MORE!!!

  • James Vee says:

I love this look, I received cosomopop for Christmas so I can’t wait to try out this look. I also adore the nail color. Will you be exploring nail polish soon? I can only imagine the incredible colors you would come up with. I’m counting on it actually.

    James Vee Reply:

I accidentally used ‘look’ twice, way to be redundant!

    James Vee Reply:

And if I would have read the rest I could have answered my own question!

    Doe Deere Reply:

    Anything’s possible ;)

  • Gorgeous look, and I hope the meeting went well!

  • Chantal says:

I’m so happy the meeting went well for you! I’m from London and have been following the blogazine for a couple of years now- I can’t tell you how excited I am that the UK is going to discover Candyfuturism! There is so much potential for Lime Crime here and I wish you only success :)

    Doe Deere Reply:

Thank you sweetie! I’m very excited to bring my brand to UK – from what I understand, you guys are very adventurous when it comes to makeup! :)

    Clara Reply:

Second this. Be nice to be able to go and pick it up in this country (and fingers crossed pop in a shop and buy it)!

  • Chantal says:

I’m so pleased the meeting went well for you! As a Londoner and follower of the blogazine for a couple of years now, I can’t tell you how excited I am that the UK is finally going to discover Candyfuturism! Lime Crime has the potential to do amazingly well here and I wish you only success :D

  • Rhia says:

Yay! limecrime in uk! I’d love to be able to go to the shops and just go crazy trying on all the limey lippies!! especially as I have no money to actually buy any more for a while :-(
I thought cosmopop would be very difficult to pull off, but this simple look is lovely.

  • Libby says:

Yayayay! Lime Crime in the UK! Yay! *does happy dance* Yaaaaaaay!

  • Suzanne C. says:

Whoah you changed your hair I like it! I was going to dye my hair your old color and we’d match (I still am ’cause I love it) and now we won’t but that doesn’t really matter since we’re not going to be running into each other seeing as I live on the opposite end of the country lol.
Anyway, So exited to try this, I finally have everything I need. I had the shadows and now I got cosmopop and eyelid primer for X-mas!

  • Raven says:

The lighting in these pictures makes you look wayyyyyy washed out, and the way you’ve posed your hand is not flattering, and it looks sort of man-ish.
The makeup isn’t bad, but I don’t think that shade of lipstick is quite right for you. You look better in richer colors, like reds. And your eyebrows are colored in a little too dark.

  • Yoshi says:

Nice nailpolish :D (My toe nails are yellow and blue at the moment..)

And I am really excited that your meeting went well. Maybe someday we will be able to buy Lime Crime from stores in Australia..? :D

  • Greta says:

Oh, why must people always focuse on the negatives! Especially negatives that doesn’t even exist. So silly. You are beautiful, Doe. Stunningly so. And even though I don’t live in the UK – man, I wish I did – I’m really happy about Lime Crime’s development!

    Raven Reply:

I’m sorry, I didn’t realize this blog was a place for us all to just sit around and take turns kissing her ass. I only wanted to offer some constructive criticism.

    Doe Deere Reply:

Your tone is inappropriate. If you don’t like something, fine, but I don’t think you need to continue with your remarks. Thanks for understanding.

    Kate Reply:

It wasn’t really too constructive though Raven, it was more of a straight out criticism of Doe’s looks and style. Criticism can be positive, but your comment picked apart almost every aspect of Doe’s current look/photograph. It was a little on the unnecessarily negative & hurtful side.

    Meidhbhin Reply:

I honestly can’t tell how the tone of it was inappropriate and unconstructive. Doe does look washed out, she said herself that the lighting was harsh. She does look better in richer colours, and I do think that the eyebrows are too dark, but that is probably Doe trying different things to suit a darker hair colour. All of these things were pointed out, and they were pointed out so that it could be improved, not to pick apart the look and be hurtful.
Say for instance that somebody posted pictures of their make-up, and their foundation did not match their skintone. What if nobody pointed that out? Everybody makes mistakes, and if people do not make one aware of them, they may never be fixed, and one would remain oblivious and perhaps not look bad, but not look as good as they could.
    It’s not as if she said something;
“UGHH YOU’RE SO UGLY AND FAT AND SHOULD DIE IN A FIRE DOWN A WELL!!111ONE”
That would have been negative, untrue and not constructive. I think that people see any sort of critique, and they see somebody calling them ugly. Raven gave advice on how to improve. She was not trying to ruin anybody’s confidence.

  • Kitty says:

    YAY!!

I cannot wait for your products to be avaliable over here! :D
Yet another thing to steal all my pennies from me, I think I’m going to have to stock up when it gets here! :D

  • Remi says:

I really like the makeup too! [I sometimes feel perturbed by how hard people look to find flaws in others :\ ] The nail polish is adorable, too.

And congrats on the meeting!! Here’s to many more.. let’s see Lime Crime all over the place in 2010!

    Remi Reply:

and before the commenter replies to me too, I’m not ass-kissing. I honestly didn’t notice any of that stuff before reading that comment.

  • Raven says:

Since I’m getting hell for being “negative” I’d like to at least tell you that your eyes look gorgeous.

  • Miss B says:

Looking forward to seeing your makeup in person in (hopefully) London.

  • Rachael says:

I just wanted to say thanks Doe, this picture made me want to by Cosmopop. The color looks so pretty and I hope I can pull it off
    =^.^=

  • Suzanne C. says:

I do have to agree about the eyebrows they’d go with darker make-up but this look needs a bit of a lighter color. Just saying because the umm incident here reminded me that I was thinking that.

  • Florencia says:

i love how cosmpop looks on you… i bought it but i cant pull it off *tear*

  • Amanda says:

I think Doe looks lovely and I adore the makeup, but the lighting is a bit unflattering. The way I look at it, though, it’s great to see that even a gorgeous model/musician/makeup artist/diva such as she is human and susceptible to less-than-perfect lighting.

  • Alison says:

I’ve always gotten the impression that Doe’s mantra is that a person should look however he or she wants so long as it makes that person feel good. Personally, I like the makeup. It’s simple but very pretty and shows off Cosmopop really nicely. More importantly, I think Doe likes the look. I don’t think we would be seeing the tutorial if it were otherwise. So who cares if the lips are too light or the eye brows too dark (for some preferences)! While everyone is, of course, entitled to their own opinions, there’s no need to shoot someone down if they like their appearance.

Doe, I think you rock this look, and I’m sure you have the confidence to make it look even more awesome in person. Congrats on the meeting!

    Doe Deere Reply:

Exactly! I believe that we should all be free to wear whatever colors we want and whatever shades make us happy (yes, even if it’s blue lipstick!). Let’s keep an open mind! :)

  • thuy says:

love the look. i must add elf to my next order. and congratulations on the successful meeting. i hope to see lime crime in stores in the us as well soon. happy new year!

  • Becca says:

  • Emily says:

I am so excited about Lime Crime coming to the UK!!!

  • leelee says:

oh wow that is intensely exciting! congratulations!

  • Bebette says:

Hey, with the criticism thing going on, maybe its good to remember that there are always 2 ways to look at photos/makeup/hair, etc. One is the polite and friendly “Oh how cute” you expect from everyone and the other is what you really want from your sister or your BFF: the honest, cold, hard opinion, even if its ugly. Sometimes people cross these up – if you aren’t the BFF, criticism probably isn’t welcome. And if you ARE the BFF, your friend probably really doesn’t want you to gloss over the truth. Its all in context and depends on your relationship to the person.

HOWEVER, that being said, when you are dealing with fashion, beauty, acting and the arts, critics are important. I will never forget the first time I was on a shoot with my Diva – a woman whose beauty had already earned her fame and fortune – and heard how directors spoke about her. Though her hair, makeup and outfit had been put together by top pros for the shoot, I heard it all. Too pale, stand this way to hide your butt, the boobs make the chin look too wide, the blush is all wrong. Some of their remarks seemed downright insulting to me, but never to her. She took every word in stride, went with some of their suggestions and told them to kiss off on some others. But none of it was personal.

So in Raven’s defense, I think she meant to take the role of a director-type critic and not the polite acquaintance, which is perfectly valid. After all, beauty is subjective, and every artist makes choices that not everyone agrees with. Ever go to a gallery opening? We critique what we’re shown, good or bad.

Most people here, however, take the role of acquaintance and say nothing if you can’t say anything nice! Its all in how you perceive what Xenia is presenting here. Is this a friendly forum, or a place for artful critique? Its a little of both, so it isn’t surprising to find both kinds of reactions to her photographs.

All that being said, I viewed the photos myself not as a professional shoot, but as semi-candids showing a face of the day before heading out. So any little lighting details are overlooked. The look itself didn’t wow me, but Xenia, you were lovely as always. As you mentioned, the makeup was never intended to be a show-stopper: it was a way of using these colors in a more subdued business environment. And for that, mission accomplished – the overall effect kept your bright style intact without distracting from business at hand. And in that regard, it is perfect.

    Raven Reply:

Thank you for this. I didn’t think I was out of line with my first comment, but it seems like any time I offer some sort of criticism in this blog, I get rude comments from other readers in response. Maybe I was bit harsh, but as a model and artist it’s kind of important for Doe to be able to take critique because there’s SO much of it in the fashion industry.

    Suzanne C. Reply:

Just a thought about this, not a judgement(does that senence even make sense lol) I think there can be an in-between. People are free to comment in whatever style they want, suck up, friendly/politite, critical, but I think I go for more of that BFF approach you mentioned. Except while I’d say whatever is on my mind to my BFF and tell her the harsh truth I still don’t want to really hurt her. Thats how I critque Doe keeping in mind theres a line you can cross. Of course I’ve made mistakes and will again i’m sure. I suppose you could say it’s Ravens perogative even if some of us found it a bit harsh, just as long as we don’t let harshness let this blog lose it’s friendly welcoming feel. You can go to far. Just a thought. *shrugs*

  • Ellie says:

I love the look! I bought Cosmopop a couple of weeks ago and have been trying to find a good way to wear it. This is really similar to my own style and looks great, thank you so much for featuring it!
Also excellent news about Lime Crime in the UK… especially for impatient people like me who want their lipstick to arrive the moment they order it!

  • Lauren says:

Can’t wait for lime crime to come to the UK! It is brill, and nice to have it our side of the ocean!

  • Natalie says:

WOW I love this look. It really is a subtle way to wear it and look fabulous without necessarily looking over the top (which is fun too hehe)

  • Colleen says:

Doe, I’m not sure if I like the new hair color. I was comparing it with your side photo and only then did I realize how dark it is. :/ Obviously one photo was taken inside, the other outside in sunlight. But, I’m not sure. It’s a change. But change is good. (: Why the change, Doe?

  • Emily Jane says:

Lime Crime in the UK? How delightfully exciting! :)

I always admire your hair colours and now with the darker tone it looks amazing again, do you dye it yourself or do you go to a salon for it?
