Curling Your Hair: a tutorial
Category: Beauty, Makeup Tutorials
Hello Deerlings! (and all my new friends from Stumbleupon :))
Today I’m going to show you how to style your hair like this:

Things you’ll need:
- Clean, medium-length hair
- Heat-protectant spray
- Styling iron
- Hair spray
- 30 minutes of free time
Step 1: Curling

Essential tools: hair spray, styling iron
Hair spray: my all-time favorite is Got2Be Blasting Freeze Spray. It’s the only spray that’s strong enough to hold my thick, heavy hair – and it’s cheap ($6.50 at Rite Aid)! If my hair was finer, I’d be using Aquanet that’s even cheaper – $3. All hair sprays are pretty much the same in my opinion, so I don’t bother with the more expensive stuff.
If there was something worth an investment, however, it would be a styling iron. I curl my hair using – yep! – what most people call a hair straightener. The truth is that it can be used for both, curling and straightening – and they make them in pink! I did a lot of research and chose the 1″ ceramic tourmaline iron by FHI (about $70 on eBay). You can get one for a lot less, but the problem with the cheap stuff is that it doesn’t heat up hot enough to do a good job. I definitely recommend dropping some coin and getting a pro one, regardless of the brand.
A few hair-curling tips:
- Round hair curler works as good as the 1″ flat iron.
- Only curl dry hair. Applying heat to wet hair is damaging to your locks.
- Use a heat-protectant spray on your hair.
- Be careful not to burn your fingers and ears. That stuff gets hot!
- Never use hair spray prior to curling (after is ok). It’s bad for both, you and your iron.
- For curl-resistant hair, roll each curl into a ‘ring’ right after curling. Pin on top of your head while you’re doing the rest of the head to allow more time to settle.
- Make different-sized curls! It will give you more volume and look more spontaneous. Thicker strands will create larger, looser curls (great for bottom layers); thinner strands will make smaller, tighter curls which you generally want on top.
Here’s a good video how to curl hair using a flat iron (don’t you just love that gay guy?!):
Step 2: Styling
Run your fingers through your hair, separating the curls. Don’t overdo it – 2-3 times should be enough. The key to creating volume is teasing – brushing the hair backwards, pushing it towards the roots. If you are not familiar with the concept of teasing, this video shows exactly how it’s done. I like to spray strands before and after teasing – for maximum strength.
For this look, you want to add volume not so much to the top but the sides, making them all puffy and doll-like. Take the hair around the top of your head and pin it up – this is the part you’ll leave unteased, and use to cover up the mess later. Tease the rest of the hair until the right volume is achieved, then gently brush the unteased curls over. Set with hair spray one more time, all over. Voila, you have a head full of beautiful curls! :)
Deerlings, let me know if you have any more questions and I’ll be happy to answer them for you.

Your hair is so pretty!
Will this work for really thin/fine hair?
And your skin always looks amazing. Its it really that amazing? or just slightly amazing with amazing makeup on top? And if it is just plain old amazing by itself, whats your secret?!

DD, the tutorial is helpful enough. However, I still have a question. How do you do the hair in the back of your head? I was never able to straighten/curl up that part…

This is probably the greatest post ever.
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one with thick hair that refuses to curl.
This really helped, thank you so much!

Wow your tips are great and your hair looks beautiful, I love the video BTW. Lately I have noticed more beauty vids on Youtube, my boyfriend needed a haircut so I watched some vids on how to cut hair and yeah :/ I kinda messed it up.

You are a stunning woman!
I LOVE your hair! It is the perfect shade of red. Hope you don’t mind me asking, but is that you natural color or do you use something to enhance it?

I decided to get my flat iron out and try one section of hair just for fun, and I of course burned my head pretty badly.

What a great idea! I have suer curly hair (that refuses to straighten) but maybe I could use this to create looser curls?

How well would this work for really layered hair(think a kind of “emo mullet” style.. minus the creepiness of the mullet.. lol)?

Nice falsies! You started my obsession with false lashes a few years ago, now I CAN’T STOP.
THANKS A LOT, XENIA.
I would curl my hair, but it is CRAZY short.
Also, the ‘whip’ hanging from your window in the post previous to this is actually a cat of nine tails, not a whip. I mean, it’s a type of whip, but usually when people say ‘whip’ they mean a bullwhip. I know a lot about whips, being both a history buff and a domme. :D

Oh I LOVE that göt2b hairspray, it’s the most amazing thing ever. Now I kind of wish I hadn’t chopped off most of my hair last month; I’ve been in the mood lately to play with it, but there isn’t anything there to play with! I’ll come back to this in a year or so, hahaha.

I was wondering if you have any tips on keeping red hair from fading? It is inevitable but is there anything you do to keep it looking brighter?

I found you years ago on LJ, when you were still Lime Crime. This site is so cute!
Like Yulia, I was also wondering how you achieved that vibrant shade of red. :)

I love you hair, it’s beautiful. You mentioned in a previous entry what hair color you used but I can’t find it, I was wondering if you’d share it again.

Just to add a couple things:
-Round brush blow drying the hair before curling is another good way to achieve volume for those who don’t want to tease it.
-If you use drug store hair products, make sure to use a good clarifying shampoo afterward because they tend to leave a waxy build up on the hair. Something like Aveda’s hair detoxifier. Only once a week though!

What’s Hair protectant sparay and why on earth haven’t i heard of it!? I won’t let any heat get near my hair ever since it destroys it, i’ve always wished there were something to protect it. When i was younger i put thermasilk (i think thats what its called) gel on before straightening and it protected my hair but made it crunchy got my flat iron dirty. I wish whatever it is Wal-mart sold it since i know they’re hair product isle by heart and i’ve never seen such a thing.
