Tales of the Unicorn Queen

Photography: Grenouille

This past Saturday I got to be a part of a marvelous event called Dances of Vice: the Spring Ball. Held on the day of Vernal Equinox, this celebration of spring was held at historical landmark of Venetian Gothic architecture, the Montauk Club. The guests were encouraged to adorn their hair with budding twigs, flowers, horns and antlers, and I have to say this is the first event I’ve seen where every. single. person. was dressed up! An abundance of fairies, fauns, various mythological creatures all decked out in glitter, feathers, brocade… Just total artistic madness! The guests enjoyed music & dance performances, the quaint and the bizarre from vendors on the second floor and, of course, the fashion show.

The Horse dance

I was walking the runway for Megan Maude. Megan, a talented designer and a friend of mine, dressed up her girls in fine petticoated dresses & matching head pieces.

My outfit. Yep, that’s a dove in my hair!

Drowning in layers lace and with ringlets bouncing around my head, I felt like a real princess all night. Most importantly, I realized how much I love Megan! She is like my big sister.

On a side note, I totally didn’t expect to be recognized so much!! People knew me from LiveJournal, eBay, for my makeup line of course… I even ran into a couple girls wearing Lime Crime eyeshadows! Ahhh!! I was compelled to walk around and flirt with the crowd by handing out free LC eyeshadows to guests. ;) Can’t wait for the next event!

Dances of Vice 11/22/08 – amazing!!!

P.S. Huge thanks to the amazing hair & makeup team, the designers, the models, and of course Shien Lee for organizing this event!

Wow, that looks like it was quite a party! With huge Victorian wigs everywhere, how could it not be a great party? Great outfit Doe, you look like a little Victorian angel :)

  • Pixie Dust says:

The dove in your hair is such a cool touch! I love the Victorian era and the models, including yourself obviously, look absolutely stunning with those hair up-dos :)) Loveliness squared <3

  • I’m dying to do a Dances of Vice event… maybe I’ll wear the bird headpiece I made! Everyone looks lovely.

  • Xenia! I met you at the party, I was in the blue dress with the orange hair, I asked you to model for me. I actually hadn’t recognized you until after that when my friend mentioned it. I used to follow your stuff years ago (through a friend though- way before I knew how to work the internet) and it’s so funny I ran into you like that!

I have some photos of you I have to post. Keep in touch, I’d love to have an actual photoshoot with you.

  • Gaiya says:

…I so wish I live where you live.. T.T that party looks amazing. Events like this make me realize it’s such a previlage to live in a country where expressions like this can be made freely. :) I wish it was a little lighter in the youtube vid. As amazing as it was… I wish I could see better. You looked so lovely as usual, with a air of mystery. huhuhu. ;) Love the dove.

  • mousse says:

I saw you there! I walked for Sam(Blaspheminas Closet) and almost tripped and fell. So embarassed!!!! I was surprisingly too shy to say hello, but you did look fabulous!!

  • Lily says:

Looks like so much fun!! I wish I lived in New York right now…

    Megan Maude and Blasphemina’s Closet were featured designers? That is so cool…they’re a couple of American Lolita brands that I really like! The dress she has you in is adorable. I want it ;_;

  • Sal says:

  • Oh! I’m so jealous– I’ve been dearing of Dances of Vice for what seems like ages, and I ache to go. It looks like you had a wonderful time!

  • Shien says:

Hiya sweets! It was so nice to meet you at the ball, and I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed the evening! You looked otherworldly in your beauty and as a Lime Crime fan I made the connection later that night when I saw you with your makeup case, but never had the chance to tell you so!

You are welcome to Dances of Vice any time my dear, I know you must have many fans at DOV so I would love to feature you as a vendor sometime if you’re interested. Please keep in touch! Looking forward to seeing more pix from the evening, I’ll let you know as I come across them :)

Here’s the sad truth. I live in NY but I didnt know that this event existed! I woulda totally went if it wasn’t by invite only. :( Waa, I’m sad I missed it!

  • Stephanie B. says:

I’ve always wanted to host or just attend a ball like that for the different seasons, but I don’t think it’s by invite only…I was looking at the website and it had prices for ticket costs. I could be wrong but if I’m not I might be tempted to make a trip up to NY to go next year!!

  • Jenny says:

….That looks AMAZING. And I’m in the New York area! But I’m probably too young to go…me being a wee lass of sixteen an’ all.

  • Simone says:

Ooh, I have a bird clip like that…mine’s smaller, though, and purple =D

I’d love to go to something like this!

Woah, you were a Megan Maude model?? I adore her clothing. It’s really funny how so many of the people I read/watch about on the internet know each-other. You look absolutely stunning in her dresses… I suppose that this fashion show marks a jumpstart in her clothing business? :D

  • ps says:

I was one of the girls that got some eye shadow. The really excited one that went “oooh! Limecrime goodies! Lookie lookie!” Thank you very much, I was so excited because I promptly turned around and shoved it at a MAC lover to try and convert them :)
