DDBD 10/09 winner
Category: Fun & Games

Congratulations, Colleen (comment #473)!
Our biggest Doe Deere’s Box of Delights yet – 662 submissions! Thank you all for sharing your favorite stories, I’ll never run out of ideas what to read for the next, um 100 years? At least! Next DDBD: November 16th.
Peculiar observation: Alice In Wonderland was the most-mentioned. This made me very gleeful as it’s one of my old favorites as well. As a matter of fact… *whispers* I’m working on an Alice In Wonderland-themed photoshoot to be released around the holidays. Shhhh. ;)))

Congrats! :-)
Personally, I’ve become a bit bored with Alice in Wonderland as there are so many different people doing takes on it that its nearly a cliche. Everytime I see yet another Wonderland thing come up, I feel like yawning! Though I’m sure your shoot will put a new spin on it, Doe. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Agreed. I like it, but it feels a bit overrated…especially since I am into Gothic Lolita, Alice is all over the place! I think it’s just a case of too much of a good thing…

I also agree, but I think I love Alice for more than her iconic status, I just love the kind of story she’s in. I’m also a fan of the Wizard of Oz and Spirited Away… a young girl dropped into a strange new environment, who has to rely on her own strength as well as the kindness of others to make it through. :)
And I can’t wait to see this photoshoot. :D

While I do enjoy the iconic status of Alice in Wonderland, the major draw for me is the concept. I have to agree with loving the kind of story; I think you phrased that wonderfully, Kagitsune.
Also, it’s just so whimsical, which I find delightful. I don’t care as much for the various reincarnations of Alice in Wonderland, though, as I am a purist in this matter. I want accuracy.
In all honesty, I don’t mind that it is over-done as long as it is done well. I do my best to ignore the less-than-stellar versions. :)

Just so that I am not ambiguous: I mean various reincarnations of the actual story*. I love when Alice provides inspiration for other avenues, such as art, music, or fashion–especially fashion.

Congrats Colleen!
I am really excited to see your Alice in Wonderland photoshoot, Doe. By the way, it was so exciting running into you at Alice’s Tea Cup on Sunday. I was exuding an immense amount of glee for the rest of the day! Thank you so much for the pictures. :)

Damn! “Just keep swimming just keep swimming just keep swimming swimming swimming” what? we’re not underwater? oh , well someday i’m gonna get one of those!
Ya know, I didn’t put Alice in Wonderland for my answer (nor did I put Finding nemo lol) But i am really rather obessed with it. I was The mad hatter for Halloween last year (along with 2 friends who were the cheshire cat and the white rabbit) I even carried a teacup with a stuffed mouse in it. So why didn’t I choose it? Honestly it kinda scares me with it’s bizarre-ness. It’s part of the fun to be weirded out by it but I suppose I considered it but threw out the idea because I think the best story shouldn’t quite give you that “WTF is this?!” feeling the whole way through. lol. So yes one more Wonderland fan here, loving that pic.

Ooo Alice will be interesting. To be honest I was never a massive fan of the story but for the last few months and for the forseeable future a major part of my work is involving Alice. My friends and I are setting up a theatre company and the first production is Alice in Wonderland, written by the director. We’re done everything we could to not make it Disney, or anything like that twee blue dress that you see for Alice (Well our dress will be blue but it’s a redesign of a Chanel dress we fell in love with, hell yeah, Alice does couture!!)

Congratulations, Colleen! I actually have a few Alice stories to share:
I was in Oxford this summer and got to visit the Rhodes house where the actual Alice Liddel had stayed and signed the guestbook– I got to see her signature! She had signed “Alice [married name] (Alice in Wonderland)”.
It is one of my favorite stories as well: My last birthday (16th) was an Alice in Wonderland theme– the invites were hand-cut pictures of the white rabbit illustration with ribboned scrolls attached to his hand- The scroll had the info and it was all in a giant tag-shaped envelope which read “eat me” in very small cursive and had a teeny glass bottle of colored sugar crystals attached. I required everyone to come in costume and I made little “eat me” sugar cookies, tea sandwiches and tarts, etc., and we played croquet on the rug with wooden flamingo mallets my dear mother made.
Finally, Saturday night (or actually yesterday morning!) I went with my friend Alana to the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Rialto Theatre (which just happens to be the theatre shown at the end of the movie!), and this month was a theme show: Alice in Wonderland! Riff Raff was the mad hatter, Columbia was Alice, Janet and Brad were Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, Magenta was The March Hare, and Frank was the Queen of Hearts! Alana and I went dressed as The White Rabbit and The Queen of Hearts respectively, and the cast loved our costumes and makeup (I did it for the both of us, and my mom had made the costumes previously) so much that they gave us each a free cupcake on our way out! It was TRES exciteeng.

I was never too into Alice in Wonderland — I’m all about The Wizard of Oz! However, I am going as Alice for Halloween, and I need some makeup tips (so how serendipitous was your blog post?). I’ve seen some things, but since most tutorials are made for fair skin and I’ve got brown skin, it’s hard to know what works before I go out and buy products…
Anyway, I’m excited to see the photoshoot!! :D
