A time machine trip back to 5 years ago...2005. As a naive and distressed 2nd year grad-student who was super unsure of herself (wow did it show) I was wearing strange combos of plaid skirts or dress pants and unflattering tee shirts. I was in a strange place relationship-wise which also reflected on my clothing style. I was semi-controlled by and co-dependent on a guy I had no good reason to be with. I wore things that he liked, not what was me. My wanna-be-style was RED and BLACK and UNCARING and ANGRY with hints of my cute simple happy self getting lost along the way. Back into the real time of 2010 reality my style has morphed into something totally “me” and I love it. I am nearing the end of my grad-school responsibilities and have emerged a kind of butterfly of confidence and the way I dress reflects that. I enjoy bright color tights and knee highs with cute shoes and vintage dresses of all shapes and colors. Besides an engagement ring (from the most amazing guy on the planet--in my mind) the only jewelry I don are happy vintage barrettes and hair bands. My style is FUN, COLORFUL, SIMPLE, and HAPPY. Even days that I slip back into an unsure, unhappy state, a little glitter makeup and a right placed bow, and maybe some mismatched socks can put be back right. Life is too short to care about what you look like but you still gotta love it!! It is truly interesting how dress style and image progression really does reflect where you are in life.

Let's see..the last 5 years where the last 5 years of my teenage life...so there was definitely a lot of change..haha. My style was almost always directly linked to the type of music I listened to. I think I started in a grunge/ punk kind of stage..then went on to emo/goth..with the all black, corsets, and eyeliner. And then as my music taste evolved..I went into an indie rock/hipster sort of stage. Currently..I'm kind of a mix of everything. My underwear displays the victorian era with all this lace..and then my outfits display more modern styles like cute dresses and fun tights.

Hmm, I believe when I was 23 I dressed in 1940's style, I was influenced by a friend of mine who collects vintage everything! It was fun and still a classy look, better than my goth look when I was 16 ;) Now I take all the styles I've dressed in over the years and combine them into a look that is more for my age. At 28, I still wear vintage red lips and combine it with shredded black jeans and leather boots, but I keep everything else natural. No more crazy hair colors for me, although I can't say I sometimes miss the smell of punky color hair dye. When I'm 80 I'll probably be one of those old ladies that has blue hair.

When I was twenty years old I dressed in theme. I had short dark hair, red lips and dark frame glasses. Some days I was 60's mod with short skirts, tall boots and big earrings. Some days I wore long tree climbing dresses and hats. Some days, in the Cambridge winter I would don a big peacoat and buy a boutonniere for my buttonhole. Every week the world was a new theatre.
In the decade that has passed my hair grew and was cut, grew and was dyed. I had white streaks and looked like an anime character for a time.
Now that I am Thirty years old my hair is once again short and dark. Again red lipstick and dark framed glasses reign supreme. Now that I am a single mother of two small children there are not so many theme days but rather, a vaguely crazy-cat lady aesthetic with cute, functional layers, great shoes and always a boutonniere pin.
