Dressing for a concert
Category: How To

My outfit for the Britney Spears show:
vintage blazer, shorts, feather hairpiece, bronze gloves, glitter mary janes, fishnets
So, how does one dress for an indoors concert? Are there certain rules what to wear and what shouldn’t be ever worn? I’ve been to quite a few so I figured I’ll share some advice to make your experience more pleasant.
- Outfit
It’s a show, so the more outrageous your outfit, the better! However, I recommend staying away from expensive or one-of-a-kind items, as you don’t want your prized possession ruined by a sticky drink or an accidental smear of lipstick. Band t-shirts are a cliche, but if you are really feeling it, get creative with it: cut it up, tie the shreds around your body in an interesting way, add pins! Accessorize like whoa, but avoid expensive jewelry and stuff that easily comes off – like a belt with a front clasp (I learned this the hard way). It’s a good idea to bring a cardigan or a light jacket – you never know if it will be too hot or too cold in the venue.
- Shoes
If it’s a standing concert, be sure to wear comfortable shoes. They don’t have to be flats – just something you can stand in for a couple hours (let’s face it, a typical 90-minute show usually results in at least 3 hours of standing!). Don’t wear anything too fancy on your feet as they’ll inevitably gets stepped on. Besides, who pays attention to shoes in a crowd anyway? And never, never, never wear untested, brand new footwear to a show – unless you want to be focusing on foot pain instead of what’s going on on stage!
- Bag
It’s the most natural desire to want to bring everything you can think of in your bag – like a hairbrush, a can of Aquanet and eyeliner, but refrain and bring only the necessities. Leave the expensive gadgets like iPod at home (the only exception to this is your camera – the more compact, the better). Here’s what should be in your bag:
- driver’s license/ID
- debit or credit card
- small camera
- keys
- cash (bring singles for tips if you’re planning to drink)
- cell phone
- breath mints
- medication, if you take any
- ear plugs (optional)
Put all items in a wristlet or a small bag you can easily keep an eye on at all times. I advise against backpacks as they’re an easy target for pick-pockets. I know, it sucks to watch your back amongst fellow fans, but better safe than sorry, right?
- Hair/makeup
This is your opportunity to express yourself and go wild! Your hair and face will be very visible and admired by the crowd. Go nuts with bright colors, glitter, hairspray, extensions, hats! Best of all, if any of it gets ruined, it’s all temporary anyway. Have fun!
Deerlings: what do you wear to concerts? Any concert-going tips you’d like to share?

Great tips! I typically skip a bag altogether and only bring what I can fit in my pockets: Cash, driver’s license, car and house keys.

Excellent tips, darling!
The last concert I went to was an Imogen Heap concert in ‘06. It was phenominal. For that I wore some lovely Knee high black boots (One of my many super powers is the ability to run and stand for long lengths of time in heels. ha ha!), black mini skirt, white secretary top (With tastful cleavage), and fishnets. Sadly, back at that time I was nowhere near as good with make-up as I slowly am getting so I was of modest face. My beau, however, said I was quite the looker. Since he was with, I had him hold on to my wallet/ID and phone. It’s so handy having a man to help you out ;)
I must say that outfit is just stunning! And that red lipstick is gorgeous! <3

This is great! I’m going to a concert soon, for my favorite band- Death Cab for Cutie! I’m planning on bringing some white high-tops and getting Ben to sign them. Sounds impossible, but still, one can dream. :]
Also, I LOVE your outfit! I’m interested in your make up…what eyeshadow is that?

I recently went to the Pendulum concert in Vancouver, and was super pissed when a sticky drink got spilled next to my new purse. So seriously ladies, bring an old purse to shows if you can, because it’s heartbreaking when something new gets ruined!

The last concert I went to was Third Eye Blind. I try not to dress too nicely since I don’t want to get other people’s sweat all over me, especially at a concert where it’s standing room only.
Definitely bring a water bottle if it’s allowed! I almost passed out at the TEB concert because I was so dehydrated. I was fortunate enough to be standing next to a girl whose mom worked at the concert and supplied her with extra water. They make little half-pint water bottles that can easily fit into a bag.

I totally need to dress up the next time I go to a concert. I can’t believe I’ve never done that before.
Also, this is totally random, but I was messing around on Polyvore and ended up making an outfit/set inspired by you: http://www.polyvore.com/doe_ish/set?id=7165918

Last concert I went to was a goth festival, so it was more than less a must to get all dressed up. I mostly wore skirts (not too short or to long and wide), a corsett and either army boots or half-boots with a broad heel (makes standing/walking in them for hours more comfy).
Next concert I’ll be visiting is on saturday (can’t wait!). I think fitting to the music of Combichrist I’ll be wearing my army boots, my short black uniform-style dress with white seams and fishnet stockings. :)

I generally make my outfits for concerts. The last show I went to was a Gwar concert. They already were outrageous outfits, so the wilder the better.

I made a little barbarian outfit out of one of those horrible pair of frankencroch old lady 80’s pants that are always horrible fake brown velvet or suede. We’ve all seen them and cringed. Made knee-length shorts that laced up the sides, a bra-type top with thick straps and was very asymmetrical. Then a belt with those fuzzy catnip mice hanging off of it, and cat ears. Wicked barbarian cat makeup as well. I like going all out for concerts.

One tip for concerts is to always bring a friend if you plan on heading to the front of the stage if its a standing concert. You never know when you’ll get trampled over!! The one concert I went to the crowd was swaying so much that I got pushed onto the floor twice and my male friend fell with me to cover me in case I was stepped on or anything, which I was and my shine/hand got a huge bruise and hurt for awhile. Put he helped pull me up and I continued to enjoy the music.

Sequin fanny packs. Patricia Field has them for $24 and I’m pretty much in love. I rather be hands free during a concert.

If you’re planning to be near the stage at a standing concert, please try not to have too big/fluffy of a hair style! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve ended up with face/mouthfuls of other people’s hair. Not pleasant!
And I don’t know if there’s anything out there that’s similar to the Braccialetto by tokidoki for Lesportsac (which they don’t make anymore), but I use that to hold cash and since it’s on my wrist, I can keep a closer eye on my money. Before I got one though, I used to keep money in my bra. I never bring my debit card out because I’ve never even been to a concert where they take plastic. Cash is always accepted!

I have never been to a concert where it was even possible to style my hair, where makeup, or nice clothes. All the heat, sweat, and rubbing on people and falling over pretty much means my hair is a birds nest by the time I get out. I can’t imagine doing it up or wearing makeup, I would look terrible and be so much more embarrassed!
It sucks I can’t dress up at shows.

I tend to wear super-comfy (but still super-stylish!) and a cool tee-shirt with sneakers… I tend to jump around so much at concerts (\m/>.<\m/!!! ) that I ache for days afterward! ^^;; I think next time I’ll try a skirt and leggings though… jeans get too sweaty.

whenever I go to shows I end up in jeans for some funny reason. That also means I have jeans with zip pockets and t-shirts so ripped they barely can be called shirts anymore. But that’s actually a good thing, because I’m never too hot or too cold. Also, I always bring a friend. It makes everything twice the fun!

My concert going tip is to NOT spend the entire night trying to take photos on your camera phone. So many people do that nowadays. The photos are going to be crap anyway, so enjoy the moment :D
Those shoes are heaven!

I usually go to harder rock concerts, so there’s a bit more of a limit as to what I can get away with realistically wearing =^P
I usually end up wearing baggy cargo pants/shorts with zippered pockets to safely keep a hold on my phone/money/etc, steel toe boots (for pants) or just a plain pair of converse (for shorts), some kind of crazy (but still stylish) top that I can move easily in and won’t worry about getting dirty/sweaty. I highly reccomend that you at leats tie back your hair if you’re going to stand near the stage where it’s all crowded. There’s nothing worse in my book than getting stuck standing behind someone with long loose hair (or worse- DREADS!!!!) while they’re headbanging. It will hurt. I try to tightly braid my hair to my head at a concert, which can actually come out looking pretty cool if you know how to pattern it. And crazy makeup is always a must =^]

great tips. im goign to try the clutch thing at my next one. im always so worried about my purse in mosh pits
The last concert I went to was Dir en grey (japanese metal band) I wore black skinny jeans, pink converse, black tank top and a neon rainbow sweater. Mixed with my pink hair and bright purple makeup, i was one of the brightest people there
For summer concerts (warped tour), i usually wear a short dress with leggings in a weird color, big sunglasses and very little makeup (its usually too hot for any of it to stay on)

I think the outfit is awsome! I don’t think that anyone else would have thought of something that original. It reminds me of something that one of Britneys dancers or even her would wear in this “Circus” concert. I hope you have a good time. I hear that the Pussycat Dolls are opening as well! There allways so fun.
I usually don’t dress like anyone else at the concert. I saw Black Light Burns, and Combichrist and wore a purple mini skirt with pink leggings, and threw some fishnet over them. I guess I just like being really colourfull.
My number one tip is (espically if you are going to a goth/industrial concert) is pockets. Make sure to have some cute pockets to put your ID,Cell Phone,Cash, and some lipgloss in. That way you can rock out without worring if the guy next to you will be grabbing your money.

I find pockets to be a bit unreliable too, as I get pretty beat up in the pit, and girl pockets are never as big as boy pockets… So I stick EVERYTHING into my boots! Except my cell phone, which I just stick in my pocket and kind of loop around my belt, in case it falls out.
Generally, I dress down from my usual goth-punk lolita wear for a concert and go in skinny black pants and a comfortable top that I’m okay with having twenty different kinds of sweat soaked into…
I never wear a skirt to a concert, except the one time I couldn’t get a pit ticket and had a seat (not nearly fun), so I wore a skirt with my thigh-high Converse and a torn-up shirt. I actually had people ask to take pictures with me! Hahaha.
No matter what, I do go all out with my make-up and hair, though, since those are only temporarily ruined, unlike clothes!

You look lovely!
I’m into rock and metal and always end up jumping around a lot, so my standard concert outfit is a black T-shirt with a strange pattern on it (it’s my favourite!), jeans and Converse.
If it’s cold out, I try to take a jacket I can tie around my waist so I won’t be cold waiting to go in, but once I’m inside I don’t need to spend time and money putting it in the cloakroom. :)

The last Marilyn Manson concert I went to, I wore a black fishnet body suit, black high platform boots with buckles from Hot Topic, a black trench coat zippered up with padlocks down the front and a military style hat. I wore make-up that was inspired by MM’s dancing girls from his “Mobscene” video. In the past I’ve usually worn a variety of skimpy vinyl outfits…luv his concerts, I ALWAYS go all out for them!:):)

My number-one concert going tip is this:
Unless you are amazing at taking photographs during live gigs, do not bother. Leave the camera at home. Enjoy the show.
Google for the pictures later. Someone else, possibly even professional, will have taken plenty.

My last concert I went to was the Dresden Dolls, and due to Being-a-woman-hazzard, I had to forgo my planned outfit for something more comfortable.
That said, I’m attending an Amanda Palmer Concert, later this week (March 21st), yes I know, I’m an Amanda Palmer junkie… but I’m considering something old fashioned. I make my own hats like this one here and I was planning on wearing this racer back tank top with a red or pink lacy camisole underneath for coverage. Black Pants and some nifty pirate books I found at half price at hot topic (you can find cute stuff there, you just have to go look, or have a sister, like me, who works there part time). I love these boots, not only are they low heeled and comfortable, but I can change the ribbon, and make a different look to the boots! I love them! I think Red or Pink ribbon for this outfit. As for makeup, I’m trying to take a look off my betta fish with LC makeup, its gonna be an inside ice blue/green (crystal ball and princess caraboo) and cat eyed from the middle of my eye outward is a deep burgundy red (a mix of Hip duel colors and this nifty pigment from rimmel. I’ll take pictures….hope they come out all right >.<
Anyway, I’ll post them on my website after the concert! Any ideas would be helpful ^_^
