Tales of the Unicorn Queen

Hello, I am Doe and I’m a crafts junkie. There, I said it. I looove making things with my hands – from jewelry to furniture – and DIY runs in my blood. And so one day I decided that I’m going to make a Unicorn outfit for an amazing photoshoot. It was partially debuted at my Fairytale Birthday Picnic, but of course that was just the beginning of its evolution.

This is how I had it before. Hand-dyed bustier with a rainbow lace bit around the top. Already pretty candyfuturistic but not quite what I was thinking yet.

This is what it looks like now. Clusters of jewels & pearls all over, things sticking out, sparkling, glowing – you get the idea! So awesome. It took forever but was well worth it.

Looks like candy and treasure at the same time :)

And then of course there are the shoes. I wanted something extra-special, magical but still futuristic. I tracked down these clear PVC shoes with silver edging and HOLOGRAPHIC SOLES!!! Can you spell GLEE??? Originally, they had small silver bows in the front but I added my own bows made out of leftover fabric from the skirt. The decoration was secured by small hairbands and thus is completely removable – I can’t imagine the situation, but if need be I could take it off and wear them with the original silver bow instead.

Aaaand – finally – the full outfit!

I illustrated a quick skirt tutorial here

The piece I’m most proud of, however, is the horn. I took the most creativity & thinking to invent something that doesn’t just look good but stays on top of your head. I made it out of a Christmas ornament and some crystals – came out pretty heavy, actually. But not heavy enough to remind you you’re wearing something on your head that protrudes 6 inches forward (I almost smashed it getting in and out of the car several times!).

I really can’t wait to shoot this, it will be brilliant! :D

Deerlings: what is your favorite DIY project you’re most proud of?

So exciting! No outfit can look more kinds of yummy at one time than that one.

  • Sal says:

Regularly astonished by your crafting prowess, Doe. I’m pretty useless when it comes to DIY, but am damn proud of my hand-assembled brooch necklace!

  • Katelyn says:

Wow, that outfit is even more insane than before! So pretty!

Oh, and as far as DIY goes, I like to knit things, mostly mittens.

  • Nicole says:

In all honesty, you’re one of the best DIYers I’ve come across. Talk about eye candy!

  • ah so adorable! the bustier is perfect! i can’t wait to see you in the final outfit. i have a ton of diy projects i mean to be doing but they’re not quite happening yet (flower crown, bleached jeans, embroidered pillows, ect.)

  • Michelle says:

Oh my goodness that bustier turned out AMAZING! I can’t wait to see the whole outfit on you, although I don’t think I could walk around with that much bling on my boobs – it would make me feel self conscious ;) I’m sure you’ll rock it though Xenia – really looking forward to seeing more Candyfuture ensembles!

  • Michelle says:

Oh whoops! My favorite DIY would probably be a poofy skirt I have; it gets a LOT of wear. Made out of thrift store fabric; I painted some of the roses and splattered pink paint all over the rest. You can see it here at my flickr. It wasn’t very complicated but probably one of my projects I wear the most; I’m also working on a skirt with Alice in Wonderland fabric, and I have a cloche I crocheted with a hand painted Day of the Dead skull and a bow on it that gets me compliments all the time. Love me some DIY!

  • I love the shoes, reminds me of fairy-kei :) And the Christmas ornament as a horn is a great idea! I’m putting together a Victoriana unicorn shoot myself and that is an excellent kind of horn :)

I love going to Renaissance festivals, and while I buy some of my costume pieces I try to make as much of it as I can. In the below I made the chemise and the skirt.

    http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v190/30/101/23450606/n23450606_40665702_400.jpg

Later, my costume evolved and I made another skirt. It’s hard to see in the photo, but its three alternating fabrics, yellow, cream, red striped.

I’ve also made a few other costume pieces, like a blue tattered skirt for an Amy Brown fairy costume (there are wings, but they are tiny and made from copper and silver wire by my sister and very hard to see)

I love making costumes and my next big project will be a Victorian natural form bustle gown. Sadly I have to wait until I can afford the fabric and trimmings that are needed.

  • I love it! Now I need to hire you to make me one!

  • Emily Nicole says:

Oh Doe! That outfit looks amazing! <3

My boyfriend and I just bought a sewing machine a few days ago and already we've made so many things. I make the pattern/cut fabric/make directions and he sews. It works wonderfully.

The two things we've made for me have turned out beautiful! We made a corset with Japanese dragons on it and a ruffled undershirt to wear with it. Today I'm thinking of making a T-shirt hoodie with an old shirt I picked up at the Salvation Army.

Can't wait to see how the photoshoot went!

  • Sophie says:

The shoes are absolutely fantastic! The colors are so dreamy and lovely.

  • eyeliah says:

    the whole look is scrumptious!

  • Sarah says:

this is great halloween inspiration. and that horn looks like candy – i want to take a bite!

  • Holly says:

That outfit is all kinds of awesome. I’m in love with that jewel-covered bustier especially, and the colors! The color, Duke, the colors!

My fave DIY project? A couple months ago, I got to recreate Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” bridal outfit from the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards (and actually recreate the performance too!). It required visiting many thrift stores for the kind of jewelry that I needed, and I got to make my own poofy skirt and wedding veil, and the only things I had to get online was the “Boy Toy” belt. All in all, the whole thing cost me about $100 to make when you could buy a cheaper-looking version online for a little less than $200.

  • Yume Ninja says:

i absolutely love your diy outfit! the horn, the skirt, the jewels.. it’s perfect!

  • Hilde says:

It’s an AMAZING outfit. I love it! The horn looks like candy – sorta marsmallowy! And thanks lots for the skirt-tutorial, it might prove very helpful!

  • Carmella says:

I love how the bows on the shoe matches the skirt. So pretty!

My favorite DIY project is probably my Halloween costume from a couple of years ago. I was Pandora from ‘Guitar Hero’. Nobody really knew who I was, but I didn’t really care. I loved being able to wear giant platform boots to school. :)

  • Jade says:

Wow, so purrty! That top is so awesome, with all the crystals. Are those jewels and pearls real, or are they like plastic? You should totally launch a new fashion line. As far as DIY goes… I stained one of my shelves once, but that’s as far as it goes. I’m going to start making my own bath products like soap and face scrub and stuff, because it will hopefully be healthier than using chemical-packed stuff.

  • Limespark says:

All the sparkle just put me into a happy daze! Gorgeous, gorgeous. I can’t wait to see your new pictures- and I hope you include a tutorial of the makeup!

  • chloe says:

this is incredible, but one thing i’ve wanted to know for ages is how did you make your antlers?

  • liz says:

Oof, yay, I love your DIY! It’s soooo fabulous!

  • Tera says:

    That outfit is absolutely gorgeous!!

A photoshoot with that outfit will look breathlessly stunning!

  • Momoko says:

Yeah yeah, your outfit’s tottaly fairy kei! I’m into fairy kei alot right now, I was wearing the style today and got stopped on the street by someone asking to take a photo! It was way cool. I don’t know if it really counts as DIY, but I always like tying curly gift ribbons (the iridescent kind is best!) into my naturally curly hair, the curls match! Making homemade barettes is always fun too, buying plain barettes at Michaels craft and attaching tulle, ribbons, beads, and silicon-caulk-whipped-cream.

  • Sam says:

WOW! the out fit was beautiful the way you had it before, but it’s even more amazingly gorgeous!! Your so talented. =)

  • chelsea says:

    wow wow. This is awesome.

  • Pinksky86 (Jackie) says:

WoW!!! I didn’t think that outfit could be anymore fantastic…but there you go again making something already fabulous into the most delicious, candy-futuristic outfit I’ve ever seen. Great DIY skills…love the beading!! =) My favorite DIY project that I’ve ever done is last year for Halloween, I made my own Princess Lolly (from “Candyland”) costume. I had never made an entire outfit before, but it was soooo much fun. Loved it…but most people didn’t know who I was…oh well. =)

  • Bonniee:) says:

Making more than a thousand little paper stars. :)

The super cute puffy ones. :D

and I managed to make a domo costume for halloween. ^^

    google images: domo-kun
if you would like to see. :P

and for the paper stars…i forgot the link. D:

  • DesirĂ©e says:

Oh those are pretty. LOL I even replied to your tweet about them. But the craft I’m most proud of was a little personal jewelry set I dubber “Wish Upon a Pearl.” It was pink and white. And the beads were pearls and paper stars. I loved it soooo much.

  • Simone says:

I could just eat your bustier. Haha, that sounds wrong. But like you said, it looks like candy…but also like treasure. As for the shoes, I think attaching the bows with hairbands is a great idea. I would never have guessed. This outfit really captures your candyfuturism idea. Absolutely love it.

Customising clothes isn’t my strong point (well, I’ve never tried it) but I enjoy other ‘crafty’ things such as scrapbooking and web design :)

  • caitlin says:

i love the horn and the skirt.

i make things too. i like to make books and knit.

  • Casey says:

You are so creative!!! I absolutely adore how amazingly bright and sparkly your unicorn outfit is! Can’t wait to see you modeling it. :)

I’m not sure what my favorite DIY project is… I’m constantly creating new things (Saturday I remade a tshirt into a strapless, 50s style top; this week I’m making a dress!), so I think every new project is the one I’m the proudest of! hehe!

  • ruth says:

not exactly DIY, but I am practically Jesus himself when it comes to gift wrapping. let’s just call it a gift.
I am however ok at decorating ugly frames into pretty frames.

  • Mononoke says:

What was once badassery has become 8.7x the original badassery. This outfit is the Grand High Llama of Awesometown.

    As for my DIY…

    This.

  • Amazing! I love how the bustier jewels aren’t all perfectly placed and only covering the cups, instead they kind drip off. It’s gorgeous!

As for my DIY, I love the designs I sell in my shop. Particularly loving my brooches and the scissors necklace right now.

It is ridiculous how much I love that skirt!

I went searching for a picture and realized it’s been a very long time since I’ve done anything crafty.

My favorite project is the “fairy dresses” I made out of flower petals, leaves and seashells. Each is about 3″ tall.

This one is made of bark and an ornamental maple leaf, mostly:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v60/deltablues/fairy/Front.jpg
This one used skeletal leaves as lace:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v60/deltablues/fairy/34lello.jpg
And this one is made of various kinds of sea weed and tiny shells I found on the beach:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v60/deltablues/fairy/seashellfront.jpg

Probably my most “candyfuture” project would be my snow-cone shoes:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v60/deltablues/dresswithshoes.jpg

And if I didn’t live on the opposite coast, this is what I would have worn to your fantastical birthday picnic:

  • Glendy says:

OMG I love the jeweled bustier its so chic! I can absolutely see it as a future fashion trend. Hmm… D.I.Y – I am thinking of making my wedding dress but that’s still up in the air, so we’ll see!

    Much love,
    Glendy

  • NIkki says:

    Your creation turned out beautifully!!!

As for my DIY project…. I am most proud of my costumes. I started a little over a year ago and since have made 2 ren dresses both a girls and guys Victorian costumes, as well as 3 steam punk pirate costumes. I can’t believe how much fun it is and why it took me so long to start sewing!

  • Kat A says:

this is one of the best entries so far. too much fun!!

  • Zeruda says:

You always inspire me!! Lately I’ve been quite productive :) Made this bow yesterday http://i27.tinypic.com/2aac1ah.jpg I also started with a hat but I’m not done yet. but It will be awesome :) http://i31.tinypic.com/s5hksp.jpg

  • Libby says:

Aw man. The outfit is just too awesome! It’s funny though, because my friend and I were thinking about doing a photo shoot of a unicorn and lion (idea from a nursery rhyme) and then you posted the Doe-candy-unicorn-of-joy! :D

My DIY efforts usually fail quite drastically, but I’m exceptionally proud of the fox outfit that I put together last year… I wore it to my favourite music festival — http://www.flickr.com/photos/rocky-road/2760465759 , http://www.flickr.com/photos/evilibby/2772566944/ — it was great fun!

  • Tabitha says:

This outfit is wonderful! the colours make me think of poisonous gas clouds in the moon light, heehee.
Have you read Acorna the Unicorn Girl by Anne McCaffrey and Margaret Ball? Alien unicorns FTW!

  • Maria says:

I am absolutely in love with the corset you made!
To be honest i’m quite proud of this piece http://mariquez.deviantart.com/art/CocktailCandy-Dress-100415528 . Sold it for $450!! Still can’t believe it lol.
Can’t wait to see the unicorn shoot!

  • Lyn says:

I heart your outfit loads! have been waiting for this post since CandyFuture part 1. ;+) the other memorable one was the Leprechaun outfit (have something for Leprechauns!). I’d always thought you’ve been amazing since the ebay times, but you just get better & better! :D

& MY favourite diy project that i’m most proud of? uhm… that’s such a hard question! i have so many things that i’m really proud of. i am also a crafts junkie :p & make lots of clothes.

i just made this dress yesterday that i love to death. & i’m also really proud of this bag (scroll down); i think it turned out unbelievably well for my second bag ever. & this vest. & these pants (scroll down).

i could go on & on.

& maria, i know you from deviantart! & still adore that dress :)

  • Chelsea says:

Oh my lands, what a fabulous birthday dress!

  • Rose says:

I love that shade of blue on the bustier!

The best project that I ever hand crafted had to be a replica of the huge gun that was used in the animated film Akira. It took me almost 2 months!

  • Jessytessytavi says:

I’m in love with your unicorn outfit. They’ve been my favorite mythical creature for years and I have so much stuff decorated with them.

I’m a big crafter, too; my problem is I never wind up finishing what I make. ^^; I’ve completed or modified a few pieces of jewelry; I think the thing I am most proud of is a cellphone charm that looks like raindrops, with little silver bells hanging off it that chime when you move. I want to try and remake it, because I’ve improved since that experiment.
