There is a lot of misinformation on the internet about the Red 40 colorant being tested on animals, even though it isn’t. Since we use it to make the red color in Lime Crime’s Chinadoll vegan eyeshadow palette, I felt the need to address this head-on.
I reached out to FDA on behalf of Lime Crime and obtained the following information:
According to the Federal Code of Regulations (21: sec 74.340), Red 40 is already approved for use in food & cosmetics and as such does NOT require animal testing.
Of course, most things have been historically tested — that’s one way we know they’re safe. But according to the FDA, further testing on Red 40 Lake Dye is no longer required, and as such our suppliers do not conduct it. Lime Crime’s response to fda letter. Being Cruelty-Free is of utmost importance to me and Lime Crime, and I’m glad to have customers who feel that way too.
