Tales of the Unicorn Queen

A new Forever21 opened in the heart of Times Square in New York – and one’s of astronomical proportions, at that. 4 floors, 90,000 square feet, bigger 1.5 football fields, it burrows 3 levels deep below ground! Naturally, I had to go and investigate.

I should probably mention that I’m not being paid by Forever 21 – I’m just a big fan. (Although I can see how you’d think that, let’s face it, practically every outfit I put together includes a F21 item.) The concept of “fast fashion” really agrees with me – as someone who rarely wears anything more than 5 times, I don’t want to invest my life’s savings into my wardrobe and will never say no to an opportunity to experiment with style without financial  consequences.

Escalator

Aside from it being ginormous, Times Square Forever21 also happens to be purely awesome. I adore the princess-y decor, the lucite ornaments, the checkered floors. What’s so unique about this store is that the space is broken down into separate rooms, each catering to a theme: I’ve seen a princess room (pink, frills, sequins); high fashion (designer-inspired);  rocker glam (black cigarette pants, shredded tops); boho garden party (floral prints, lace); nerd chic (houndstooth skirts, oxfords); hippie love (beaded smocks, forehead headbands), urban (early 90s-inspired geometrical prints), punk grunge (neon tanks, camouflage bottoms), and a bedroom dedicated solely to underwear!

My favorite room? Probably the high fashion: deep pink walls, black accents, and mannequin art installations.

That dress was incredible – can you believe it’s entirely made of paper?!

The “high fashion” room

The “underwear” room

There was also a first dedicated shoe salon, but I never liked F21 shoes: they all seemed black and gray, there wasn’t enough styles, and the quality looked like it just wasn’t there. There was also a wall of handbags, but the same problem: not enough variety and unimpressive quality.

Hey, did I mention there is a real NYC cab on the bottom floor???

Forever21 started out as ‘cheap clothes for youth’, but that’s no longer the case. It’s affordable fashion for all ages, really, provided you don’t take yourself too seriously and can say “yes” to all things young, colorful, and fun! So what about the quality? You’ll be pleasantly surprised – for the prince you’re paying, the quality far exceeds expectations (honestly, I’ve seen designer merchandise of lower quality than this).

What should you go here for? Jewelry (hundreds – hundreds! – of amazing necklaces, rings, bracelets and headbands to chose from, for all tastes), funky dresses, skirts and tops. Most importantly, you should come here for inspiration. The styling I saw on the mannequins was some of the best I’ve ever seen a store do, and gave me ideas how to dress myself for weeks to come! And the fitting rooms – adorable!

Tomorrow: Fitting Room Confessional: what I tried on, what I liked, and what I bought.

Deerlings: what are your thoughts on Forever21?

they were in the process of building this when i was in new york. oh well, one more reason for me to come back!

  • Erica says:

I love F21 for jewelry and accessories, and though I adore their products and clothes, my beef is with their sizes. They are not plus-size friendly enough, and I feel that even their plus size range is still on the small side. I wish they’d expand their sizes a little. I’d love to wear their clothes!

    Doe Deere Reply:

Legit. They absolutely should stock more larger sizes!

    Angela Reply:

I heard they’re carrying their plus size line, Faith21 here. Hope that’s true!

    Shanangian Reply:

they carry plus sizes … but its so small and very limiting style. I wish they just upped all there clothes to a plus size.

    Melissa Reply:

I agree. I still considered somewhat skinny and the large sizes there are often too small for me.

    Erica Reply:

    Agreed! :(

    Suzanne C. Reply:

Yep that’s why I don’t shop there! I haven’t been inside F21 in years, Seriously!

  • Michelle says:

I like the style of clothes at Forever21, but after watching the documentary “Made in LA” I’m trying to support businesses with better labor practices.

    Mary Canary Reply:

    Amen to that sister!

    shayne Reply:

I do like Forever 21 but like most clothing stores I try not to overshop and only buy things I really need especially after watching the British documentary series Blood, Sweat & T-Shirts http://planetgreen.discovery.com/tv/blood-sweat-tshirts/ Definitley get a hold of it and watch it if you can. This is why I don’t agree with “throw away” fashion.

    Tabitha Reply:

I agree completely! I’ve stopped buying from a lot of stores because of that. It’s hard, but I like to know my money is going to a good cause!

    Annching Reply:

One of the costs of fast fashion. Yeah, styles are plentiful and prices are cheap, but I think stores like Forever 21 have really contributed heavily to the buy-buy-buy consumer mentality that we have. But the BIG plus is accessibility- can’t argue with that..

It’s a tough one for me!

    Michelle Reply:

Accessibility at what cost though? A lot of the people who get exploited in their labor practices are young women like myself. I’d rather be a responsible consumer and help other women get the rights they deserve than have access to cheap and cute clothes.

    shayne Reply:

It’s a double edge sword. If people don’t buy the cheap clothes then sweat shop workers won’t have jobs and they won’t be able to support their families but then you don’t want to support companies that use sweat shops and child labor. It’s almost a no win situation. This is why I only buy what I need and try to shop with companies that don’t have sweat shops in overseas. Good thing I like second hand clothes. :)

But yeah, Blood Sweat & Tears is a hard thing to watch but it WILL open your eyes up to the whole “throw away fashion” thing. I obviously was already aware of sweat shops and child labor but I had no idea how horrible it was to be a cotton picker and sorter in India. And for 10 hours of work they get paid pennies a day…all so we can have cheap clothing to wear.

    Michelle Reply:

This is why I support a living wage and microcredit, I’m fully aware of what happens when these factories go out of business. It definitely is a really hard place to be as a consumer knowing that the consequences of buying and not buying both have significant effects on the economic well being of others.

    Doe Deere Reply:

As someone who grew up in a poor, jobless developing country, I have seen both sides of the argument. My father used to work for an American company. Did he get paid a ‘fair’ wage by American standards? Of course not. Did he hold on to that job dearly? Absolutely, because a) He HAD a job, whereas many others didn’t. b) It paid a lot better than other local places could.

I don’t support the idea of mistreating workers, but we must remember that working for a foreign company *can* be a big deal in a poor country. Those are coveted positions, because there isn’t much else available. At least that was my experience.

    Michelle Reply:

There is definitely a difference between how a company manages itself within other nations. It’s an arduous task to compare issues and legislation surrounding the globalization of markets, but I think it is essential for consumers to be aware that there is no such thing as a cheap bottom line without something being compromised, whether it be working conditions, wages, ability to form a union etc.

With regards to Forever21, the violations that occurred were within the United States and I personally do not see that any company that has access to the benefits the United States provides to companies and businesses to not follow the laws and provide fair and equal pay to it’s employees.

    tokidoki Reply:

I think everyone should watch the above documentaries (not because I want to change your views) but because I think it’s very important to be fully informed on issues. I think being informed is important because you do “vote” on what is right and wrong with your money every day. Whether it’s what clothes you buy, what food you eat, what products you buy etc… Many people have NO idea what goes into making the clothes you wear daily. Sometimes 8 people have worked on that one shirt you bought for $10. And in Blood Sweat & Tears they show different kinds of sweat shops. One is actually a very nice and clean one but many are filthy and disgusting…rats and bugs everywhere, no bathrooms just a hole in the floor, bad air circulation, and many workers sleep on the floor at night because they have a hard time meeting their insane clothing quota for the day. Those are the ones I don’t want to support. Nobody should have to work in those conditions.

And the kids in Blood Sweat & Tears who went to India to work in the garment industry for a month could barely survive by the wages they received. They barely had enough for food and just got buy for rent when they all pooled their money together for a disgusting tiny and dirty apartment. They worked in the slums and lived in the slums. We are not not talking being paid fairly by American standards they were not even paid fairly by Indian standards.

    Bonniee:) Reply:

agree! even if it means paying extra for american apparel. :)

    tnt Reply:

with american apparel you are still supporting a controversial company. although i’m not a big fan of f21′s clothing either, if i had to choose, i’d go with fast fashion over the sexual objectification of young women(/girls!) EVERYTIME.

    Michelle Reply:

Yeah, as much as I love American Apparel’s business model the sexual harassment and objectification of women and men they use in their advertising is really unappealing. If you’re product is really good, why do you need sexism to sell it?

  • Kati says:

I love Forever 21, especially after they opened a huge store at the mall near me. Such an overwhelming selection! I must visit this store :).

  • Nina Marie says:

The F21 near me is pretty large. (Got the Sawgrass Mills Mall in my backyard!) My only problem is that the store here is pretty unorganized, it’s hard to find anything! They have cute things but I can never seem to find anything that stands out to me. Also, I was always under the misconception that the quality of their clothing wasn’t that great.

  • allisee says:

    Ah! Lloooooovvveee F21!

  • Rickey says:

Ours is organized the same way, except I think it’s only three floors and the third is a tower… its Old Town Pasadena, and pretty darn awesome… haven’t been in AGES, though!!

BTW, SOOOOOOO excited to see the LC site today, I was hoping it’d be up by now… !!

Can’t wait to see what you got tomorrow.

  • lauren says:

i love forever 21. although being 27 i do get kinda embarrassed loving it still. in the cherry hill mall in nj i believe they’ve changed it to “forever”

    Doe Deere Reply:

What’s so embarrassing about loving things that are bright and fun? It’s who we are, so there! :P

  • shannon says:

The only thing I bought from f21 that i still wear is the cheap glittery pink flip flops! The shirts I got really didn’t like getting cleaned after so many times. Every time I go in I see fun stuff, but nothing I would pay for the low quality (sorry!)
I would buy the jewelry, but I’m not a big fan of plastic!

  • Kristabelle says:

Wow, that makes the 2 story one in SF look small. Wish we had that here! I love Forever 21- one of my favorite things is their super cute, amazingly cheap lingerie. Who wants to spend fifty bucks on one set anyway? What I don’t like is the girls who work in the stores (at least where I live, they’re stuck up and catty) and their crappy return policy. Just means I have to make sure I love something before I buy it, though- maybe not such a bad thing!

    Robyn Reply:

I worked at forever 21 for a few months when I was between jobs and desperate for cash and I will say that out of everywhere I’ve ever had a job there has never been as much stupid drama as when I worked there. These girls would argue over the most trivial crap(where does a shirt go,there were tears shed over this). The return policy does suck, but my rule has always been that if I’m shopping there I have to try it on before I buy it because their sizing is so inconsistant.

    Melissa Reply:

There was so much drama when I worked at the Buffalo Exchange (a trendy thrift store). Girls need to quit with the drama!

    Kristabelle Reply:

Maybe it’s just retail in general…when I worked at Victoria’s Secret it was the same way, and once there was even a screaming fight and pushing in the back room. I don’t get it, you’d think people would be on their best behavior at work.

  • Ragrunzel says:

Awesome! F21 has greath clothes, too bad we don’t have that store here in Germany.
It’s also popular among Gyaru – my favorite japanese “subculture” which I really adore.

  • Elise says:

IMO They sometimes have items that i am attracted too, but then i get completely turned off by how cheap the clothing is in terms of fabric and form. For me, a beautiful fabric is the most important part of a fashion piece. It makes the outfit and it looks much more chic and put-together. At F21, i feel like everything is made of synthetic materials that don’t last. You end up spending more money than with a strong, durable more expensive item from another store.

  • shayne says:

Wow! That F21 is HUGE! Love the design of it. The ones near me are only 1 floor and they are in malls.
I do like their clothes but I don’t like their sizing. Their stuff always tend to be too big on me since they don’t carry xsmall sizes. I’m petite so their tops/sweaters, jackets are always way too big on me. And their pants never seem to fit me right. It seems like only their skirts & dresses fit me. I have better luck at H&M.

  • Alex says:

    I was just in NYC! But I didn’t go to this one, I went to the one on 14th. I wish I had known this had like 7 floors. D;

  • StephDoll says:

The mannequins look so real!! pretty creepy. Love the paper dress, that must of took a lot of time.

  • kaiya says:

is Forever21 only in the U.S?? because ive never seen it before, but it looks amazing!! Though it did remind me of a shop called Hollister, it’s designed to look like a beach house and it has “windows” that have a video of the sea. All the staff are really nice. Im not sure if it’s in the U.S but here’s some links to how it looks:

They have a website, forever21.com, but I’m not sure if they ship worldwide. Let us know if you find out!

    Melody Reply:

They do ship worldwide, but the shipping costs are ridiculously expensive. (I don’t know why everything has to go into a package, even one single item, instead of just a good ol’ envelope. The same goes for ModCloth.
That’s why I never ordered from F21, even though I would have loved to.

    Thanks guys i’ve just looked at the website and it does deliver internationally, but it is really expensive. thanks anyway :-}

There is one opening up in our local mall in Scranton, Pa next week. I am actually going to start work there this Friday but it is only as a temp to hire because all the spots have already been filled. I really hope I get to work there permanently because not only is the clothing to die for, I would get half off everything in the store as well!

    Jenny Reply:

I work at the Hollister in the mall at Scranton, Pa and i heard about Forever 21 coming but i wasn’t sure if it was just a rumor… i was extremely anxious to apply there :( How and when did they start hiring?

  • Maggie says:

As a woman who turns 30 this year, I actually want clothes that are well made, and F21 is not that. So I select a few trendy pieces from F21, but I don’t stock my wardrobe with them. The rest I prefer to look at higher quality stores for.

    Lily Reply:

Agreed. I’m 24 but have a professional job. I can’t wear clothes wih unfinished hems, no support or structure, and lacking in quality fabrics. Don’t shop there if you want to be taken seriously.

    Doe Deere Reply:

Forever21 is definitely not the place to buy work clothes, or elegant clothes for that matter. But that’s not its intention!

    Doe Deere Reply:

“Don’t shop there if you want to be taken seriously.”

I understand what you’re trying to say (if you work at a hedge fund, don’t wear F21 to work) but at the same time don’t entirely agree. I dress quirky and don’t have a problem with being ‘taken seriously’, where needed. I may have a purple tutu on, but the minute I open my mouth they know I mean business!!! ;)

    Lily Reply:

Lol. I work at a hedge fund.

So awesome, I’m jealous. We don’t have those here or in MD where I used to live.

  • Melissa says:

Oh man, I am so jealous!! I must visit this store. Thank you for the pictures!

  • Desirea says:

I LOVE Forever 21, I can’t wait to go back to NYC so I can see this wicked huge one and go shopping like crazy.

  • Kelsey says:

FOUR FLOORS?! That’s craziness. I could probably spend an entire 24 hours there. I love love love Forever 21, however I usually find more stuff I like online rather than if I ever visit a store. I’m not sure why that is. And you’re right about their amazing jewelry. Ahh, I love it so.

    Doe Deere Reply:

They said they are projecting to attract 100,000 visitors daily! Insanity!

  • Lindsay says:

I used to kind of discount their clothes as just cheap junk, but after seeing all the cute outfits you come up with from their stuff I’ve given them a second chance. They don’t make up the bulk of my wardrobe, but I do take the time to find nicer items there. The jewelry is pretty awesome too! My favorite necklace right now was actually made from two if theirs; a large heart locket on a white pearl bead chain!

  • Dani says:

These pictures remind me of Topshop in Oxford Square… Beautiful! Wish I could go back…

  • Book says:

    I am SO jealous!!!!!
We don’t have forever 21 here (not H&M).
When I visited NY I went NUTS! I loooove their stuff!(& prices.. hah)

  • Becca Rainbow says:

I love F21 also, but they are famous for ripping off designers. Did you ever have a chance to shop at Kira Plastinina when it existed in 2008? I worked there, and we had a bedroom display with mannequins chilling out… and one day (photography in the boutique was forbidden) we caught this man photographing the display… and he was a manager at F21!!!!! :O

Also, as a native New Yorker, I’ve never understood the appeal of Times Square “OOO Look! A Kodak ad!” or “O Look! Target!” and now… “OMG CLOTHES!!!! I can’t get that anywhere else…”

    :D

    Doe Deere Reply:

Haha, New Yorkers are just spoiled – it’s hard to impress us! ;)

I do know about Kira Plastinina. To be honest, I could never find anything I like in there, but maybe I should give it a second chance.

    Becca Rainbow Reply:

It’s gone!! :( I quit and they went bankrupt. Yes, I believe it was my superior selling skills that did the job :P Actually, it was because NO ONE could find anything they liked there!!! :D

Sad to say, I’m die hard Forever 21 fan although, I will never buy their shoes or underwear. Looks cheap. Four floors of shopping and more selections, my heaven! 141 dressing rooms I believe there is! I’m dying to go that Forever 21
There’s a huge one in downtown San Diego but, it’s nothing like this one!

    Lily Reply:

It must be a nightmare to work the fitting rooms. Can you imagine trying to put all the tried items back?

    Suzanne C. Reply:

Haha not if i was a customer, my family is weird my mom taught me to put things back. I return about 50% of whatever i try on in store to the exact spot I got it. I leave it for employees when im tired and frustrated, it goes at the other end of the store or if I’ve forgotten where I got it from.

  • Chelsea says:

I used to hate it. The clothes seemed too hipster (boho hipster, punk hipster, etc) but it’s slowly grown on me some! I actually got inspired by some of the stuff some of the girls at the store near me were wearing! I like it now for basics, tanks, skirts (I like their banded skirts) and cheap jewelry – because I’m on a tight budget. Some of their jewelry though, I’ve noticed is similar to some vintage things, but that could just be fashion.
I had an elderly lady give me an exact replica of their jointed-moving brassy owl necklaces years and years ago from when she was a young girl! The only difference was the quality of mine was far better and 10x larger. They have a lot of jewelry styles that could be found thrifted.

I do love some of their maxi dresses though lots!
Oh and to someone that posted above, mine USED to have catty girls, not anymore though.

    Doe Deere Reply:

Cattiness, sadly, is just a retail reality. This store, all the girls were exceptionally nice though – I bet they put them through some tough screening and training for that store.

  • Melinda says:

I like forever 21, I find great items there, but I have to be careful about what I buy. I’m a fairly active person who tries to get the full use out of her clothes, some stuff that I have bought from f21 has fallen apart after first wash, so you really have to look at what you do buy, I do get great jackets from there, and I have a great rugby shirt from the Men’s section that has lasted me 2 years that I wear constantly! I do like their hats though, but love culture and H&M are my go tos, more so H&M if they ever put a store in texas! I feel so left out!

I LOVE FOREVER 21! I currently work there as one of the visuals here in California. Our store is new and pretty big too [but not 4 stories!!! wow!] haha.

I like it that Forever has transformed itself into something more than just affordable clothes for teens. Our store includes Kids Heritage line, Mens Heritage line [including shoes for men], Faith 21 [plus size; in which i agree SHOULD have more clothes, Love and Beauty Room]. And the newest addition to the family, Maternity!!! And I love the stories each room in our store have! I just spent almost 2 hours shopping after I clocked out of work today and treated myself to some cute stuff!

    :)

My thoughts are I’m so friggin’ happy I’ve been able to change my diet and lose a few pounds so I can fit into their larges again. I do enjoy that store.

    Although, and I don’t know if I’m the only one who is bothered by this, I wish they would turn the music down! Sometimes I have to leave quickly or not go in at all because the music is migraine-inducingly loud. I don’t mind music but I can’t shop during a panic attack. X_X;

Do all the locations keep it that loud?

  • Miss Addict says:

Stores like forever 21 (and the versions we have in Australia) push fast fashion. I used to wonder how they can do it! How so cheap! So pretty! So much. I read this http://bit.ly/99A9vb this morning and your article about the mega store came to mind.

Its a lovely store… Filled with gorgeous things, shiny and new things that will be worn and discarded quickly as is the intended purpose! Things I want! … But is it worth it?

  • Suzanne C. says:

WOW! Ther really are taking over the world lol. I was really surprised when a few years ago they went from a tiny hole in the wall at the Tucson Mall (we have several malls it’s just called that and happens to be the 1 closest to me) only noticible because of the big sign to taking over Mervyns entire 2 floor space when they went out of buissiness. I’m still shocked every time I drive by.

Oh and I will definitely put visiting this new mega store on my to-do list if I ever get to NYC!

  • Becky says:

    SO beautiful!

I heard rumours of Forever 21 opening in Oxford Street, London last year, though it hasn’t yet happened. Even though many people think the UK ‘fast fashion’ market is completely oversaturated, I disagree and would love to see them open a UK flagship store sometime soon!

  • I LOVE Forever21, they are opening one near me soon, can’t wait for that.

  • yellowsneakers says:

This location used to be the Virgin Megastore, and I worked there for 2 1/2 years before it closed down last year. I like Forever 21 a lot, but I’m really, really disappointed that a place I loved so dearly and changed my life so much got turned into a friggin Forever 21. I would love to check it out, but I honestly, honestly might cry. :(

  • hazel says:

I try not to support stores with such terrible labor practices. F21 is sweatshop labor, and very poor quality to boot. They have some cute things, but I find them icky. I’m sometimes inspired by something they have, or will buy a f21 piece in a thrift store, but support their store? Nope, no way. I thrift and sew and host clothing swaps… I very rarely buy new stuff anyway.

  • I imagine myself entering this huge new store and just looking up and around and twirling and throwing up my hat like Mary Tyler Moore. I thought we had an extra large store in one of our local malls, but it’s nothing compared to that one!!

  • Kristy says:

While I have mixed thoughts about forever 21, I am totally visiting this store when my husband and I come to New York next April. It looks amazing.

I have had many shipments to me (in Australia) from forever 21. Some stuff is great, but some stuff I was really disappointed in. And the quality wasn’t that great (one shirt was so porley made that it didn’t have proper zips etc to get it on or off. I had to cut it off!!). Out of all the stuff I bought from there only some things I continue to wear. So I don’t buy from them online anymore because it can be too disappointing. But I am so stoked to go to that actual store in NY and try things on etc. It’ll be super fun!!
