Get The Look: Eclecticity

Category Style Diary

Sometimes it’s fun to mix styles together recklessly. Here I’ve got mod, floral and pompoms going on all at once – and I love it!

I dabbed Retrofuturist on my lips and topped it with clear gloss. Voila, sheer red lips!

I love how all this stuff looks together :)

GET THE LOOK

Floral skirt, contrast t-shirt, flower clip,  clunky necklace with pom poms, strappy pastel heels, glossy lips, retro sunglasses.

Eclectic!

Deerlings: do you like colorful, eclectic fashion? I can honestly say that it’s my favorite!

The sunglasses are great, they remind me a little of Johnny Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (it’s a good thing- one of my favorite movies.) I like the look on you, although I’m not so sure I could pull it off.

    You are very stylish.

  • Melinda says:

Ha! I’ve been doing eclectic for years, its how I function. I wear my gaming/comic/cartoon/tv tees with cute skirts or dress pants! Since most of my alopecia spots have somewhat grown out (for now at least >.>) I too had to cut my hair short, so I tend to put my hair in barrette clips or pin the wavy hair back with bobby pins. From there I wear flip flops, mod boots or cute shoes with this combo, and my mom’s sunglasses from the 70′s. Sometimes I even wear my pink hat with it, cause it looks so bad! ^_^ I pair that with airborne unicorn, and I’m good to go! Is it bad that I wear this to teach on Fridays?

    No, that’s adorable!

I love your shoes, Doe – I always find it so hard to find nice shoes for my feet! I have tiny UK size 3 feet, and it’s always a nightmare finding nice and stylish footwear. I can head into town, spend a good four hours looking, and not find anything! It leaves me incredibly frustrated. I also like the way that you pair socks with your strappy shoes – I could never have the guts to do that!

    autumn Reply:

Haha, that’s like me (in the US I wear 5-6 depending on the shoe), my 9 year old daughter wears the same size as me now. I find shoes pretty easily though, and often on sale since not many adults wear my size.

    Doe Deere Reply:

Hi Phoebe, both my mother and my sister have tiny feet so I know all about the struggle! Have you tried buying online? That’s what they do.

  • Jonel says:

    I love it!! (:
My style has always been eclectic in some way or another… I find a lot of inspiration from plenty of different styles/themes in life, so it’s like, why can’t my style be an eclectic mix of a couple of them in some way? I actually prefer it from following one preexisting style or ‘theme’ all the time – which can feel stale sometimes, and less original/personal (just my opinion).

Yesss! Thank you for taking the pic!

  • I hope this comes out in the spirit I intend! ;) When I was a very little girl, and I mean starting at 3 and 4, I was obsessed with makeup, play high heels, and tutus…I mix and matched my clothes all the time and walked around with my star wand waving in the air. I was so obsessed with my hair and making it perfect that I couldn’t count the number of hairbrushes I threw and broke in frustration. ;) I couldn’t get enough of dress-up, and the sparklier, the better. This went on through elementary school. I have a formal 3rd grade school picture of me wearing a sailor type of dress with pink skeleton earrings and a big, goofy grin on my face…I felt awesome that day! :) As I got older, for some reason, I lost some of this verve. Blame it on middle school and all its cruelty maybe! But I got less adventurous. Not only did I lose my sense of adventure in my fashion but also lost the confidence in putting things together for a long time. I was so shy and insecure, so the last thing I wanted to do was draw more attention to myself!

In the last couple years, especially as I’ve been following your blog and of course donning your makeup, I’ve gotten some of that verve back. I had hot pink and purple hair for quite a while, which I loved. (And hairbrushes are no longer harmed!) I don’t know that it is “me” any longer to wear tutus and heels on a daily basis…but now I at least feel like why not every now and again? I no longer care if people like it or not; I believe that the confidence I exude no matter what I’m wearing makes at least 75% of my style, and that holds true for anybody. Carry yourself with confidence, and you can pull off any look. I’m not dressing for anyone else anymore, only for me. I’ve really been loving your recent looks of eclecticity :), with your floral “overloads” and pattern interminglings. It so captures that spirit I had when I was a child. It reminds me of one of my good friends’ 4-year-old daughter who dresses like I did as well and is crazy about No She Didn’t lipstick. I love and admire that spunk. So all that to say…I’m on my way to recapturing. :) Regardless of what I actually end up wearing on any given day, whether it’s something “normal” or something a little more adventurous, the SPIRIT behind it has changed for the better, and my confidence in my own style is growing! :)

So…that’s why I said I hope it comes out right. I don’t mean to imply that you dress like a little kid or don’t know what you’re doing…oh, you most assuredly do! You know what I mean, right? :)

This is such an inspirational story, for all of us! We all express ourselves freely as kids but start to sensor ourselves as we get older. It feels good to shed self-criticism sometimes… and just be happy.

i like the sound of the sailor-ey drtess and those earring you had in that day. also that was such an inspiring story.

My best friend bought me that skirt in Toronto =D I wore it to my other friend’s good-bye party a few days ago. [She was going back to Japan =(] I wish I had taken a picture of the outfit, because i thought it was quite cute. Not nearly as fabulous as yours, of course!

    Doe Deere Reply:

  • pussy galore says:

I have to say I think the outfit especially the daggy grandmother tshirt & sandals is awful… But your hair, retro shades & spanish style rose behind the ear that matches your lipstick make it bareable

  • Melissa says:

Very cute and colorful. I’m glad someone else is into wearing cute socks with fancy shoes. I need this trend to catch on so I don’t get as many funny looks. ;)

  • Antoinette says:

I love those shoes! I’ve been looking for a pair just like that.
& now since you posted the website where you got them I’m thinking of purchasing them myself; however, I’m very weary about ordering shoes online because it always seems they’re not going to fit right or are uncomfortable.
    Any advice/input?
    Thank you :]

    Doe Deere Reply:

Well, I can’t speak for all shoes but I can say that these shoes that they are very comfortable. I’ve been wearing them non-stop for weeks. They fit true to size.

Also, if you’re shopping on sites like Zappos or Amazon, you can read reviews of what other people say – quite helpful!
