Hello, RED: how to wear red lipstick

Category Beauty

HOW TO WEAR RED LIPSTICK: 3 easy application techniques

  • Dab it: for flushed, just-bitten lips,  dab some color onto the center of your mouth with your finger.
  • Gloss it: red looks wonderful glossy (reminds me of candy apples!). To achieve the look, work color into lips with a brush, blot, then work it in again. Apply clear gloss on top.
  • Classic: create an outline with any red pencil (it doesn’t have to be a perfect match) and swipe directly from the stick. Blot, reapply. Perfect the shape with a brush or the same red pencil. Voila!

( Hello Red tutorial)

Deerlings: Who are your favorite red-lipped beauties? Mine are Dita von Teese, Poppy King, any girls from Ellen von Unwerth photoshoots and, of course, Lolita! Also check out my favorite redheads wearing red!

Gwen Stefani! I’m not really a fan of her music but she wear the red lips very well.
And Marina Diamandis – but she rocks any colour.

    Doe Deere Reply:

Gwen’s been rocking the red lip look for years, and it never gets old!

    Hi!!!
This is the first time I comment on your blog but I’ve been reading it for a while.
My favourite red lip stars are: Also Lolita (because I’m in love with the movie and book); and, of course, one of my idols, Marilyn Monroe.

Thanks for making this dreamy place of beauty. ^^

  • Eden S. says:

Kat Von D, Lady GaGa and Marilyn Monroe<3 And I've definately have to say your model Katie looks simply gorgeous with it!

  • Natasha says:

Dita is a definite, but Ava Gardner is a classic beauty, hands down.

[seems my comment went poof. Re-post:]

Veronica Varlow. Burlesque beauty and all around nice woman. She runs the webstore Danger Dame.

I know Veronica! She used to perform at my event called Maskara. And you’re right, she wears red lipstick like no other!

  • Doe Deere says:

Had to comment on my own post – Chloe Sevigny! She is practically known for her sly red mouth. :)

  • Hexotica says:

    Dita does it best!

  • Annamax says:

Gwen Stefani, of course. She’s always got perfect red lips.

  • Kristabelle says:

Wow, what a gorgeous picture! Never thought I could pull off a dark smoky eye andd bright red lips like that, but hey, worth a try. Any idea where that flower crown thing (lol) is from?

My favorite is Catherine Zeta-Jones playing Velma Kelly in Chicago. Every time I rewatch it (yeah, I’m a dork like that), it makes me wanna chop off my hair and put on some red lipstick. And Christina Aguilera looks great in it, too.

    Doe Deere Reply:

The crown is from Gardens of Whimsy on Etsy – she makes some awesome stuff! :)

And yes, Catherine Zeta-Jones looked SO stunning in that movie! It’s one of my all-time favorites. :)

  • Kellee says:

Aw.. now I kind of wish I didn’t already have Retrofuturist. But I’m definitely also glad that I do!!

There are a lot of awesome red-lipped beauties out there, but I’m going to say Roxi Dlite. She’s a pretty awesome Canadian burlesque performer I saw and met in January. She’s also super cute and sweet. :)

  • Lux says:

Judy Garland… even the sweet girl-next-door types look swell in red lipstick :)

  • Gothbarbie says:

    MADONNA (back in the day)
    and
    Tarrie B. of My Ruin

Girls with a hard edge but lots of Glam!

  • Alex says:

I find that red lipstick only looks good if you have super-white teeth :(

  • Catherine says:

My idols Christina Aguilera and Marilyn Monroe!!!

    Renee Reply:

I agree, Xtina and Marilyn are the epitome of glamour and red lips! I’d certainly add Madonna and Scarlett Johansson to the list as well.
