Tales of the Unicorn Queen

I have a fruit cat!

Category Unicorn Queen

Peach Eater

I remember the first time I discovered my Persian liked fruit. I was sitting on the couch, reading a magazine & enjoying a juicy peach when I suddenly felt a soft tap on my leg. It was Puffy – 4-month-old ball of fluff standing of her back feet, with copper eyes fixated on the fruit in my hand. Cats don’t eat fruit!, I snorted and took another bite out of the peach. The paw tapped again – with claws this time. The beast clearly wanted peach – or else!

Cherry Eater

You cave in once, they own you for life, right? Ever since the peach incident, the beast would materialize at the smell of fruit out of nowhere and sit patiently by the table – waiting for me to bite off a chunk and put it in her mouth! She is lucky she is cute – besides, how many people can actually say their dog/cat likes the same food as them?

Plum Eater

Today, Puffy’s known likes include:

  • blueberries
  • grapes
  • figs
  • strawberries
  • apricots
  • cherries
  • plums
  • and, of course, peaches.

Blueberry eater

I used to think she was in it for the sweetness but apparently, cats can’t taste sweet due to the lack of a receptor on their tongues. So the origins of my cat’s fruit eating habits are a mystery – maybe she just digs the taste!

Deerlings: do your pets like to eat anything unusual? Bonus if you have a picture! :))

  • One of my cats likes to steal green stuff: lettuce, artichoke leaves, etc.

Another one likes muffins and is very pushy about trying to get some.

Ours haven’t gone for fruit although the dogs like it, especially strawberries, bananas and even clementines.

They’re omnivorous too and obviously have preferances.

I had a solid black cat, and he was obsessed with buffalo wings….the HOTTER, the BETTER!!!!!!!!!!! lol He lived to a rightful old age though, he was born when I was in 4th grade, and passed away when I was 29….so he was about 18-19 years old. He also was a talker, every time I’d cross his path, I would greet him with a “hey buddy boy!!!” and he would reply with a loud yet crackled “hewwo!” He was such a loud meower as a younger little brat, that as he got older, his voice would crack. lol

  • Porcelain says:

Aww! She’s adorable. Heh, one of my cats has an affinity for raw onions. Euw.

  • Natalie says:

Hah! pic forthcoming, those are sooo cute! My cat absolutely loves SMOOTHIES made from fruit. She won’t eat the actual fruit like yours, but she will happily partake in my morning smoothie and gets quite put out if I don’t share.

She also likes ketchup, coleslaw (but she eats the lettuce too, doesn’t just lick off the dressing), peanut butter and jelly sandwich, eggs, and strangest of all, ramen noodles O.O

  • nicole says:

One of my kitties loves melon. He’ll eat any melon, but he’s let me know that his absolute favorite is cantalope (I think it’s because they’re both orange). We can’t cut a melon without him crying at our feet for a bite.

Porcelain: WOAH, onion is totally cat poison, as well as garlic and lillies and other plants from that family. Be careful!

  • Glendy says:

    Aww ^.^

My old cat used to eat corn, he loved it! He would love corn on a cob and would clean the whole cob, corn muffins, and this is how you know you have a latin cat, he ate tortillas, lol.

We never gave him corn he just started eating corn kernels one day when my mom was cooking. Unfortunately, I don’t have any pics, he passed away 2 yrs. ago but I have yet to see what my new two cats will eat.

  • Britt says:

My old cat Rosie would eat anything you offered her, and it delighted by boyfriend in seeing if she would try something new.
My dogs (pictures will be posted, cause they are also just gosh darn cute!) love carrots. Which isnt all that odd. They also sit and beg for anything you are eating even if they really dont like it. Ohhh and dropies, dutch candy, my dogs love those.
And my new cat Finn thinks he wants to try anything you give the dogs, but hes more picky. However, he does like lettuse with bigmac sause on it.

And your cat is so cute!

  • Jessica says:

Your cat is adorable!! I only have pet fish at the moment, so they don’t really get to eat anything special. My mom feeds them lettuce sometimes though.

And I used to have mice; they absolutely loved white rice (heehee that rhymes) and grapes. Except I had to peel the grapes before giving it to them because they refused to eat the skin; otherwise they’d just bite a hole in it and suck out all the insides!

  • Sheila says:

My cat loves vegetables, lettuce is his favorite :) I love vegetables too, so I am also one who can say my cat and I love the same food!

  • CatHerder says:

Be careful with certain tablefoods….onions, and avocados are definately poisonous to cats…grapes are poisonous to dogs in large amounts….the fruits you are feeding should be fine in moderation…my guys LOVE watermelon.

    Pretty kitty pics!

  • Britney says:

Aww. That is so cute! I have a Himalayan, and she is so picky. She won’t eat anything but her cat food, and it has to be the hard kind, not the soft.

  • Lynn says:

My parents’ cat likes bananas, loves them!! One thing I will put in though is that grapes can be toxic to cats. I make organic pet treats and grapes are thought to be toxic to dogs, and possibly cats. Here is a link for common foods that can be toxic to pets.

But those pics are so cute, love ‘em! It is so cute how Puffy closes her eyes when she is licking them, awwww!!!

  • Lauren says:

Puffalo is the freaking cutest thing I’ve ever seen. I can’t help but squeak whenever I see pictures of her.

one of my old cats, Patches, LOVED pasta sauce. Italian cats. :D She was a year older than I was and she was 15 when she died. and that was only because she got hit by a car. It was so weird to have this little creature sitting on your chest and staring at you, knowing she was older than you.

my dog absolutely loves cheese though.

  • Lauren says:

Be careful! Grapes are not recommended for dogs and cats.

  • Wilda says:

My doggie eats almost everything, including fruit. We always give her what’s left of an apple when we’ve been eating on it (I’ve looked up dictionaries and dictionaries and I simply cannot find the english word for this. I feel really stupid now, so let’s move on). We give her carrots every now and then as well, it’s good for her teeth and she loves it. :) She won’t eat lettuce and such though, I suppose it tastes too much like grass, which she only eats when she wants to throw up.

  • rhia says:

My Jack Russell Paddy loves chille or spaghettti bolognese followed by a cup of tea or coffee awww

  • tinkerbell86ca says:

My kitty Dolly loves to hunt bugs . . . the reeeeeaaaaallllyyyyy big scary ones! It’s funny to see this tiny kitty run around the floor chasing after a huge bug . . . and uber nasty at the same time :P

Her mom LOVED peas, LOVED them! She woudl even eat dried up ones that were on the floor under the kitchen table . . . kinda funny huh? On the note of peas, my mom’s old kitty loved to eat buttered peas. You woudl put the buttered pea on the edge of a chair and it would pick up the pea with one claw and nibble away at it! eeeeee! Cuteness!

  • Kellie says:

Aww, what an adorable cat!! So fluffy, and the fruit thing is cute. I can’t think of anything my cats have flipped out for like that, but i did have a dog when i was younger that so badly wanted to be a cat. She would try to play with my two cats, one of which loved her and the other hated her. She would lick herself and the friendlier cat clean, and she even used the kitty litter box! It made cleaning up after her a lot easier ;)

  • Jessi says:

My cat goes crazy for anything mint. It’s awesome but horrible, because I love mint.
If I’m sucking on a peppermint, my cat is there expecting a lick. When I’m eating mint chocolate chip ice cream, he pounces in my lap and tries taking charge of the spoon..
He also tries getting into my little container of wax for my braces because GASP it’s mint scented.
I can’t let him in my face after I’ve used my lip balm because it’s mint scented.. he tries to lick and nip at my lips.
He also likes junk food. Ya know, chips and such. I recently found out that he likes chicken fettuccine alfredo and bread. A lot. :/
I definitely don’t let him have a lot of any of that.

For a few weeks, he’d go out of his way to chew on metal things. No idea what that was about….

  • tinkerbell86ca says:

Jessi . . . you cat sounds like a total hoot! Crazy in the best sens of the word!

  • Spatter says:

    Your kitty is so cute!

No picture, but Tuxedo (my kitty) loves strawberry ice-cream.

  • Aether says:

My cat will only eat dry cat food, not wet food and not moist food. He does like cheese strips, when I used to eat meat I’d get tacos and give him a few cheese strips, he also stole a piece of ham from me once, but I was done with it. If I make garlic broccoli stir fry he gets really really interested in it but I don’t let him have any. Before bed if I brush with minty paste he will jump on top of my chest in bed and get right up in my face and sniff my mouth like crazy.

Puffalo is so cute! I love her hair color. <3

  • MoMo says:

one of my cats loves steamed brocolli. hehe

  • ruth says:

My cat, Lucky, loves dried pineapple. It can be somewhat annoying. I open a bag of it, put it down on the ouch and the next minute he has his head in the bag, or worse his dirty feet pulling out bits.

But like a true kitty he only likes the best, he won’t stand for the supermarket brand, it’s gotta be the high end.

  • Rakel Sólrós says:

My cat is an extremely picky eater, she only eats dry food and for a treat she loves dry fish but the strangest things she sometimes eats is cucumber! Every time I’m cutting cucumber my cat is there waiting for a little bite! One time when she was a kitten she actually stole a big chunk of cucumber (maybe 1/3 of the whole thing) and tried to eat it all but mostly was able to chew around it. She probably dragged it with her mouth from the kitchen table to the living room and up on the sofa!

  • Sunny says:

My dog LOVES fruit, as did my former cat, Lola. He’d (yea he, Lola haha) would eat prunes, peaches, blackberries, and celery.

My dog’s favorite is pineapple, but he’ll eat anything, we share everything haha. The weird thing is, I’ll bring lovely salty chips home from work (chipotle chips!) and he refuses to them. He won’t eat prezels either.
    My horses like poptarts =o

picture of bullet munching away on a whole pineapple top to get at the inside part!

  • Jaci says:

    My kitty, Pan, loves plums… I don’t know about any other fruit though… he’s only 4 months old right now ^_^; Although, it appears he’s at least twice the size Puff was at 4 months o.o;;

  • Shannon says:

One of my cats eats pretty much anything as long as you feed it to him from a fork. He loves chocolate most and will actually take it from your mouth if you don’t pay attention!

These photos are gorgeous, especially the cherry one. I miss my cat being this fluffy – I can’t wait for his fur to grow back.

  • Dona says:

My budgie loves fruit, but ONLY if I am holding it. I’d start eating and poof, there she would be on my shoulder, waiting for her turn.

She’s also known to fly into cakes, especially if there’s lots of chocolate and cream. I’ve never heard of a bird who likes cakes, but oh well. I don’t let her eat, though, as I’m sure it’s bad for her health :|

  • Alice says:

My late cat loved popcorn! At first she used to eat popcorn that fell on the floor, but eventually I couldn’t pop popcorn without having her on my lap trying to get some from the bowl. My father once did the mistake of leaving the bowl of popcorn for a few minutes, which my cat took great opportunity of..

The only picture I have of her, is from that time when she didn’t get enough attention because I was doing my homework, and she jumped on top of my books and made it very clear that she had every right to get attention. It might be in my photo-album.

  • shannon says:

once in a while i let my cat lick my ice cream bowl clean, or have some of my cereal or muffin crumbs that fall on the floor. just got her so who knows what else she’ll eat!

the cutest thing though is sometimes she gets her water from the bathtub faucet, and if she knows we’re awake she starts crying to get us to turn it on a bit for her. so spoiled but oh so cute!

  • Maria says:

One of my cats likes edamame/any type of bean and my other cat will steal hot peppers off of your plate if you’re not looking! She’s also known for stealing whole bagels. The one who likes beans was trying to get my avacado last night. ^_^

  • Sofia says:

Gosh, that’s adorable! My parents cat Sputnic (because she’s almost in orbit round the house) LOVES bread, all kinds. She even chews through plastic bags to get it. But fruit, no. But their dogs love it! Raw potato is another favorite :D

Found this the other day, so cute!
    http://fourfour.typepad.com/fourfour/2008/09/i-call-the-litt.html

It makes me wonder what’s so special about blueberries? ;)

  • Sweetbabyblue says:

Please be careful with what you feed your animals, as many have mentioned, onions are toxic to dogs, most cats are lactose intolerant and recent findings say that xylitol (commonly found in chewing gum) is toxic to dogs.
Even if your cat enjoys other foods, it is important to note that cats are obligate carnivores. That is, they CANNOT be vegetarians.

  • Miss Karen says:

Awwww Fluffy is the cutest cat in the world!

My dog eats everything he loves pasta in particular :D

  • [...] makes a lot of sense. Lady Smaggle has had a blog facelift and looks ever so pretty. Doe Deere has a cat that is just as cute as she is. The gorgeous Laura opened an Etsy shop. Finally, if you haven’t already seen Liebemarlene [...]

  • Sal says:

High-larious. And the photos are priceless. My cat, Rowan, loves olives. She doesn’t actually want to EAT them, but never fails to lick a few if we’ve got an open container set out. Must like the salt. She also has a thing for adhesives: Tape, glue, if it’s sticky, it’s delish.

  • Ah!!! So cute! I’ve always loved that peach eater photo.

I have a 2 year old Bristish Short Hair named Gretchen who has some very odd eating habits. She hates dried fish, cooked fish or fish cat food. She will eat raw fish sometimes.

She LOVES hot cross buns. My vet said it’s the yeast that attracts then, which explains why she always tries to have a little nibble on my vegemite and toast. It’s like a pure yeast fix.

She usually wants to eat some of whatever I am eating. Key word being wants. Depending on what it is I’ll usually give her some. She never eats it though, unless it’s meat. She just feels left out I think.

I’m pretty careful about what I let her eat though. Her breed gets fat really easily and she is an indoor cat so doesn’t get much exercise. Snacks are few and far between.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPRk9Qi-ecE
here she is trying to eat a chicken wing and here are some pics: http://claracupcakes.blogspot.com/2008/07/gretchie-monster.html

gah!! Sorry for writing so much. Once I get onto the subject of the Gretchimon I cannot be stopped!

  • Victoria says:

Oh my goodness your cat is so cute! lol and the faces she makes while eating are so hilarious! My cats have this uncanny talent of climbing straight up a solid wood wall..
I wish I had a photo of them lol

  • Leana says:

    Puffalo! :) So darn cute!

We have 3 kitties. But Duane has to be the most unique in many ways including his vast taste in food. He loves cheese, pasta, bread, cereal, tortilla chips, popcorn, tomato sauce including the onions and tomatoes and hold your hats……beer! We have to keep it away from him. He is however, particular with the beer. It has to be a good beer not cheap beer!
By the way, chocolate is not recommended for cats or dogs.

  • casafroggy says:

If it hasn’t already been said, PLEASE do not feed your pretty kitty grapes or raisins, they have been known to cause renal (kidney) failure in BOTH cats and dogs. This goes along with all the other typical no nos, including garlic, onions, and chocolate.

Otherwise I think it’s really cute your pet enjoys fruit, Puffy is a health conscious feline!

  • Doe Deere says:

It is true about grapes. Also avocados, strawberries are not considered safe for cats. Those things I only let her have a lick or two of, and only if she really demands it. I, too, am afraid something will happen.

  • Amber says:

I have two kitties. Evil and Ashes. Evil loves potatos and in fact will fetch a small one if you toss it! He also loves bread, cornstalks (but not the corn), and roses… which is why I can’t have pretty things. He’ll sit, stare, and do his best to figure out how to get to them just short of killing himself! My other kitty Ashes has a taste for the good stuff… wine! Not that we give it to him but if there’s a glass of red within his reach he’ll go for it. I left a glass of cabernet on my coffee table momentarily and when I came back found Ashes with his whole head inside the glass lapping it up!

  • Kris says:

Don’t feed your cat fruit or anything sugary! It’s a quick and easy way to make them diabetic, and having a diabetic cat is heartbreaking. Mine ended up diabetic even without feeding it things like that. You shouldn’t even be giving it dry cat food.

  • mousse says:

I love the adorable expression on her face! My Tippi loves french fries! She stays in the window for hours….until she smells fries cooking!

    http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f367/jadevixen555/tipfries.jpg

  • Sarah says:

Hhhmm I know grapes are poision to dogs I did a search for harmful fruits for cats:
    this is what came up:
Apples, Apricots, Cherries, Peaches and Plums!
    It was from this website:
    http://www.petplace.com/cats/dangerous-foods-are-they-harmful-to-your-cat/page1.aspx

be careful! Your kitty is such a sweet ball of fluff we don’t want anything to happen to her ^_^

  • Tanya says:

    My cat loves Fruit Loops.

  • Shelly says:

My Corgi loves Beer! He will lick the top of the bottle to get his little taste! No we do NOT poor it out for him, he just licks the top of the bottle, so he is not getting drunk. I would never do that to my dog!

But it is funny to see his ears perk up when we say beer! lol

  • Anjelica says:

One of my horses really enjoys coffee and pretzels. My mom figured the coffee out one day when she had bought hers back by him once, and he managed to undo the lid and drink it. The pretzels, I have no idea about.
