Las Vegas – Day 1
Category: Expeditions, Style Diary, Unicorn Queen
I’m in Vegas! :D

We’ve arrived and checked in at our hotel yesterday afternoon. MGM Grand is ginormous – rumor has it, it’s got its own zip code! We haven’t ventured outside since our arrival because MGM has every imaginable entertainment right under its own roof: theaters, restaurants, casinos, shopping, spas, fast-food joints, and, of course, hundreds & hundreds of slot machines.

I didn’t get a chance to play yet – an army of brightly-lit gambling stations got me a little intimidated – but I had to grab a picture right away. ;)
A few words about MGM Grand. This hotel is the most luxurious, decadent creation of human architecture I have ever seen. Standing amongst its white & gold walls, surrounded by white marble and regal pattern, is like having an entire chocolate bundt cake to yourself: almost too decadent! To put it over the top, a golden lion of elephantine proportions presides in the center of the lobby – on a pedestal under a golden dome (!!).
Despite the city of Las Vegas being nestled in the middle of a desert, indoors, flowers are everywhere. There are armfuls of red roses on every corner at the front desk, goliath white lilies by the elevator, exotic birds-of-paradise by the entrance to the spa… We had dinner at an exquisite Chinese restaurant and I remember being hit by an intoxicating aroma of lilies and wild orchids at once. We were then shown to our table which had a tasteful arrangement of red marbles and an orchid in a rounded vase. Being a huge flower enthusiast, I’ve been in absolute horticultural heaven for 20 hours and counting!

To kill some time before dinner, we went to a TV show screening. The point is to get random people to watch an episode of a new show and get feedback. The whole thing takes about an hour. We watched Rules of Engagement and used a little device with a like/dislike knob, twisting it according to our tastes. Upon exit, we were gifted a Peaks and Valleys book by Spencer Johnson along with some discount coupons to places like Häagen-Dazs and NY Pretzel. What a pleasant surprise!

My first day in Vegas, I wore a casual Ruby Rox dress over a long-sleeved shirt, black hole-y tights and my beetle boots. I didn’t get a chance to do my hair or anything, but nothing that some red lip gloss couldn’t fix! :)

I think your hair looks really beautiful like that…it has such a gorgeous, natural wave! I think girls can be just as beautiful when not perfectly coifed…it’s fun to be all fixed up, but sometimes it’s nice to be more natural and relaxed too. Have fun on your trip!! :)

Doe Deer, since you are in Vegas (I’m a native)and love flowers, stop by if you get the chance the Mirage hotel- the entire inside is flowers- live planted in some areas, waterfalls in one area ( you actually walk over it via a bridge) and its simply amazing!
There is also the aquarium (Its got alot of wonderfull (living) exibits and the Sigfried (sp?) and Roy animal sanctuary! they just had a baby white tiger!
Also- if you feel the need to venture away from the strip for a few hours, there is the Springs’ preserve- its a huge plot of land that the city has turned into a horticultural preserve where several springs used to flow ( sadly they’ve all but dried up.. the native plat life is amazing though.
Enjoy your trip and stay here in vegas!!

I learned in orientation for the MGM that they never use fake flowers in any of their displays.. not even in the employee dining area.
Are you planning on seeing KA, the Cirque show, there?
Oh yeah, you should definitely check out the Bellagio watershow at night! It’s beautiful.

If you think the MGM Grand is that great, you haven’t seen Caesar’s Palace or the Bellagio yet! lol. I love Las Vegas, I’ve been there twice and I got married there. You must take a day and travel farther down the Strip on foot, definitely visit the Bellagio and Caesar’s.

The MGM is one of the cheapest hotels in Vegas. D: If you think that’s decadent, you need to see the Venetian, the Bellagio, and the Wynn.

When my family spent a night in Vegas, we stayed in the Hilton… mostly because “Star Trek: The Experience” was there and my dad and I wanted to geek out. But yes, accomodations and food in Vegas are very inexpensive and very lavish. Just don’t expect to be able to get much good service… D:
Also, I do recommend walking the Strip… it’s very entertaining and very safe (it has to be, or else Vegas would never get any visitors), and it’s free! xD

Hi! I’m glad you’re having fun! I’ve been to Vegas many a time even before I was the legal age to gamble (that was my family’s idea of a vacation). My brother lives there, and has been for over 8 years as an audio engineer (he actually works with The Killers at their studio) so I’ve always had a great time there! You should try to go to the M&M Factory! It’s so much fun! Also, my favorite thing to do is go the Excalibur Hotel and see the Tournament of Kings (it’s a jousting dinner show!) It’s amazing!! I hope you have a great time! I’ll be looking forward to seeing more pics of your adventures in Sin City!
