Lime Crime Sales In March 2010 To Help Benefit Bideawee – New York, New York, February 19, 2010

Bideawee, Inc., one of the country’s oldest and most respected pet adoption and animal welfare organizations, serving metropolitan New York and Long Island communities, has announced that Lime Crime Makeup will provide a charitable donation to Bideawee based on a portion of the company’s March 2010 sales volume. Bideawee, which means “stay awhile” in Scottish, was founded in 1903 by Mrs. Flora Kibbe, and has been providing shelter, care and compassion to homeless animals for over 100 years.

“We are always heartened by generous corporate entities that develop new, innovative charitable initiatives to help Bideawee with much needed financial support,” said Nancy Taylor, President & CEO of Bideawee. Lime Crime’s donation will help us to continue providing medical attention and compassion to the hundreds of abandoned pets and rescued dogs and cats residing in our shelters.”

A portion of all orders placed in the month of March will be donated to an organization I’ve been a supporter of for years. When one of my cats, Puffy, needed an operation, Bide-a-wee took great care her, and have since helped hundreds of animals in need. Not all of us can open free pet clinics or take in sick and abandoned animals, which is why it’s important to support those who do. Whether it’s pet food, litter, an empty cage, or a few dollars off your paycheck, it all makes a difference. I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your support and dedication to this cause.

In addition to offering vegan eyeshadows and lipsticks that are free of animal products, here at Lime Crime we don’t believe in animal testing. Lime Crime has been certified Cruelty-Free by PETA in April 2009 and finally received the physical copy to proudly display on our wall.

I bought my boyfriend a gerbil who looked just like that. He died earlier this year from an inoperable tumor. :( Nice to know that I can still find images of his likeness everywhere

    I’ll totally order in March!

Yay for limecrime! :) and Yay for animal!

“In addition to offering vegan eyeshadows and lipsticks that are free of animal products with an exception of beeswax,”

A few of your eye shadows are not vegetarian or vegan because of carmine. That statement is false unless you are not selling those anymore.

  • Xenia, I thought a couple of your magic dusts had carmine or something similar; am I incorrect? I remember inquiring at the time.

Also, why the exception of beeswax?

  • kagitsune says:

    Beeswax and Carmine (do you still use that?), as far as animal products go, are pretty benign, IMO. It’s better than cow hoof derivatives… O_o;;

    tokidoki Reply:

It’s not benign to vegans. They are still derived from animals…like gelatin for instance. So her products are not all vegan. Beeswax is not a vegan ingredient so she can’t call her lipsticks vegan if they use beeswax. Same goes with eye shadows if she uses carmine.

    Tamara Reply:

I agree. Beeswax is not vegan nor is carmine.

    Doe Deere Reply:

Just to clarify, I’m not saying all of our products are vegan (although we do offer 20 vegan eyeshadows), but they ARE cruelty-free. Lipsticks obviously aren’t vegan because, like I said, they contain beeswax.

    tokidoki Reply:

You should change your wording then.

“In addition to offering vegan eyeshadows and lipsticks that are free of animal products with an exception of beeswax”

What you have written here is false advertising. None of your lipsticks are vegan so you shouldn’t lump it in with “In addition to offering vegan eyeshadows AND LIPSTICKS”. And do you know for a fact the beeswax is manufactured in a cruelty-free way?

To many like me, cruelty free means no animal ingredients at all.

    Sam Reply:

Which ones contain carmine? I don’t want to accidentally buy one that’s not vegan :\

    Doe Deere Reply:

Pink Poodle and Diva are not vegan.

    tokidoki Reply:

For the vegans in the world, I think you need to be clear on your site what is vegan and not. The only vegan items you have are those 20 eye shadows that don’t contain carmine. You can not call your lipsticks vegan because of the beeswax. The main company I buy my make up from is Urban Decay because they are VERY clear about what is vegan and not. You should say my lipsticks are not vegan because they contain beeswax instead of my eye shadows and lipsticks are vegan excluding the beeswax in the lipstick. The first statement is more accurate and a lot clearer to understand.

    Reba Reply:

@tokidoki – Disagree. Veganism is not something that can be called at all standardized. I know many vegans who do not concern themselves about insect products, and I feel that parsing the explanation in the way you suggested inherently makes a judgement about those vegans. I personally would feel very uncomfortable saying that someone can’t call themselves vegan if they draw their ethics line a little to the side of mine.

I think it’s very important to explain what’s in the makeup, though, I agree – and I think a good job has been done doing it. There’s a link to an explanation of what carmine is, which I think allows someone who is on the fence about the substance to educate themselves and then decide (I haven’t seen that on any other sites and I really appreciated it). As for the beeswax, as I said, many vegans don’t consider that out of bounds, and it IS clearly stated that the lipsticks contain it. I personally am satisfied. If a vegan customer feels that those lipsticks and diva and pink poodle don’t classify as vegan, then that is completely valid, but I don’t think the criticism being offered is accurate.

Our standard should be transparency, honesty, and ethical production, not syntactic precision on an issue that is not precise to begin with.

    Ladystachette Reply:

I absolutely agree that you need to make it very clear on your site that two of your eyeshadows contain carmine, and that your lipsticks are not vegan-friendly. I think if you really emphasized this point, you wouldn’t run the risk of having pissed-off vegan customers finding out that they have purchased a non-vegan product unknowingly. It’s a big deal to a vegan.

    Doe Deere Reply:

Actually, we are already doing that.

This post was about our products being cruelty free, which they are.

    Ladystachette Reply:

I know it’s labelled on the ordering site itself, but some people equate cruelty-free = vegan (as there exists a notion in some vegan circles that a non-vegan product cannot possibly be cruelty-free). I was referring to this post, and, yes, I understand what it was about.

Is only the sale volume of orders placed on the website counts? Or sales in store count too?

    Just our website sales.

What a wonderful idea! My birthday is coming up in March, maybe I can buy some limecrime…
I really want some more magic dusts.

  • Ariel Grimm says:

also, that is so great that the organization helped you pay for Puffy’s surgery. When my cat needed medical help, I went to many organizations but none were able to help. Then, our friend Ralph helped save Kitty’s life!

    Ralph Reply:

Awww, shucks… thanks for the mention, Ariel.

Bideawee is a great place. My beloved Juno was cremated there. Their pet-cemetery is an amazing place to visit: even Richard Nixon’s famous dog Checkers is buried there.

  • Annie says:

Now it is extra important that I buy some LimeCrime soon :] Am so glad you are fiercely against animal testing, as I wasn’t sure if all your products were vegan (beeswax aside). I thought you probably were, but now I can be certain!

  • Lani says:

Hooray! Congrats :) Awesome to see Lime Crime giving back to animal shelters, I will be sure to place an order next month :)

But wait….your products aren’t vegan! You use beeswax and carmine! That makes them not vegan or vgetarian even!!

  • KKO says:

Do you know the percentage you plan on donating?

    Doe Deere Reply:

We will announce total amount raised in the end of March.

    Lily Reply:

Do you have a set amount or is it based on a percentage?

  • Zane says:

Amazing, just amazing. it makes me so happy to see more companies producing cruelty free merchandise. where I come from a popular saying is “help people first”, but we need animals just as much as they need us, and they need all the help, care and love that we can offer! I will try to make up the funds so I can order and donate. Doe, you are doing a fantastic job! we need more people like you in the world :D

  • mlle-b says:

Oh, are you going to donate whole sales of Lime Crime in March?
How sweet of you :) After getting my paycheck, I’ll order some lippies.

To avoid the trouble, I suggest you to post the pic of certificate of donation on your blog. I had read a retarded blog accusing you had collected a donation for animal shelter and you had spent it for your honeymoon even you were busy and just forgot to post the certificate. For me, it’s THE bull$hit. Haters have to get real… I’m sure your fans won’t take it really, but I strongly suggest you to post it :-)

As bee keeper, for as long as I’ve been able to walk on two legs, I don’t understand why vegans flip shit over Bee products. : /

    Doe Deere Reply:

I’m not too sure either. It seems like it would be really hard or nearly impossible to abuse bees. My grandparents were bee keepers back in Russia and if you treat those folks badly, they just don’t produce honey, or worse – fly away!

Perhaps a vegan could shed some light on this?

    tokidoki Reply:

Veganism is a way of living which excludes all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, the animal kingdom, and includes a reverence for life. Vegans who live their life according to the vegan belief do NOT eat, wear, use anything that contains animal by products. This includes some beer & wine (some are clarified with isinglass (derived from fish bladder), gelatin, honey, beeswax, dairy etc… They also don’t support animal experimentation, the wearing of leather and fur, animals for entertainment purposes (horse racing, bull fighting, animal circuses, most zoos ect…). And for you vegetarians, some cheeses are not vegetarian. Some contain animal rennet (enzyme produced from mammel’s bladder).

    Doe Deere Reply:

I think I understand now. What about pet ownership? I know all vegans are different, but how do you personally feel about it? Having my cats around is constant entertainment. :)

    tokidoki Reply:

I have two cats and a rabbit. I don’t think it’s wrong to have domesticated animals as pets as long as they are taken care of and loved. For instance mine are considered my children. I spoil them rotten. I even have pet insurance for all of them. My rabbit is also mostly free range (only in her cage when I am sleeping at night) and is litter trained so she has free range of most of my house. I would find it cruel if someone had a rabbit and kept it in a cage all day and night. I also don’t think it’s wrong to have a dog unless that dog is locked up in a house all day (like when you are work). I hope to have a dog eventually (want a rescued pit bull) but I will wait until I have a house and yard for the dog to play in. In my opinion an apartment isn’t a proper setting for a big dog like that.

All my animals come from a shelter too. I never “buy” a pet.

And it’s true that our pets entertain us but you aren’t charging people money and dressing them up, having them perform tricks for the public, run races that can harm them, make them fight in a fighting ring, putting them in cages for public viewing etc… I think those are wrong.

    Reba Reply:

I’ve already responded to a post you made earlier, so I apologize if I repeat myself.

I completely respect your take on veganism. I think it’s really admirable that you hold yourself to that standard.

But that is not THE definition of veganism.

I guess it should be the ideal. I think I’d be on board with that. Your explanation is really wonderful, and I think the world would be a better place if everyone followed that way of life. But again, I know many vegans who do not include insects in their considerations. Maybe they should. I don’t know, as I said, your explanation sounds like a really great ideal, a great goal. But saying that a person is not vegan unless they go by THAT standard is, in my opinion, an unfair judgement. Thus, saying that a product CANNOT be considered vegan if it contains the beeswax in question, for example, is unfair, in my opinion.

Of course SOME people will consider it not vegan. And that’s fine. But as I commented in my other post, this point is one of semantics, and imprecise at that.

That said, as beautiful as they are, Doe, I don’t feel comfortable buying Pink Poodle or Diva. I’ll have to compensate by mixing Cleopatra and Dragon Scales and using Primadonna. ;-)

    Ladystachette Reply:

A lot of vegans don’t support the use of animals to benefit humans in any way; simply put, they believe any use of them is exploitation, and they are simply not ours to take advantage of. This is known as an abolitionist vegan viewpoint, and it’s another reason why some vegans don’t use beeswax. When you discuss the treatment of the bees, you’re talking about an animal welfarist perspective, which looks at the issue from the view of how much the animal suffers (borne of utilitarianism).

Xenia, I know you didn’t ask for my opinion, but I’m going to answer your question on pet ownership nonetheless from my perspective. This seems to be a very divisive issue in some parts of vegan culture; I’ve seen people who I believe do very good work torn down by others with similar viewpoints because they owned pets. My view is that domesticated pets are far different from the animals they evolved from, thanks to human interference, thus making it abuse if we do not care for them, as it is our fault that they cannot care for themselves (as evidenced by places with wild/feral cat and dog populations).

is a good place to start as to why a lot of vegans don’t consider bee products ethical. It focuses on honey, but may be extrapolated to beeswax.
