Lottie Stannard: Makeup Magician
Category: Spotlight
All makeup in this article by Lottie Stannard.

Lottie Stannard didn’t go to a makeup school. In fact, she studied graphic design before picking up brushes one day and diving into the world of high-fashion makeup artistry, encouraged by friends. At 34, she is one of today’s most inspirational makeup professionals I know. Her ability to transform a model’s face into a work of art is like magic - awe-inspiring, dazzling and seemingly effortless. Lottie has done runway looks for Dior, Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, and Versace amongst many others; you’ve seen her work in major fashion magazines, including Vogue, In Style and Zink. She beautified celebrities like Juliette Lewis, Mia Tyler and Evan Rachel Wood.
Due to her intense schedule, Lottie doesn’t give a lot of interviews. I feel very privileged to be able to feature her in this week’s Spotlight edition. Ladies and gentlemen: 21st century Makeup Magician, Lottie Stannard!

Lottie backstage at Oscar de la Renta
Lottie, where were you born and where are you currently based?
I was born in Kentucky, raised in Southern California and now based in NY.
When did you become interested in make-up and how did you express that?
I was always interested in makeup from a young age, but was not allowed to wear any until I was 16. And even then, just mascara and red lipstick. In the late 80s and early 90s, I was fascinated by the Shiseido ads created by Serge Lutens and made collages on my walls out of the ads. I expressed my love of makeup by making my own image over the top when I could - going out to clubs, etc.
How long have you been doing makeup professionally and what is your favorite type to do?
I’ve been doing it for 6 years. Although I love it all, my favorite is runway!

What was your first session like? Were you afraid to mess up?
First technical job was a shoot with a London photographer. Yes, of course I was afraid, I didn’t know what I was doing! HA!
Which make-up artists do you admire? What inspires you?
Colors and texture inspire me more than anything. I admire a lot of artists but my tops are Pat McGrath, Serge Lutens, and Alice Ghendrih.
When doing makeup, do you have a look in mind or do you come up with ideas on the fly?
I usually have some idea from looking at the model. It really depends on the shoot and whether its paid, editorial or something that photographer specifically wants. When it’s up to me, I look at all elements and discuss everything with the stylist, hair stylist and photographer.

Do you have any favorite brands you use constantly?
I have a favorite item from most brands. But some of my consistent favorites are: Make Up For Ever, Stila, Prescriptives, BeneFit, and MAC.
Any particular product you’re crazy about right now?
I am in love with Stila lip pencil #25.
Are there any ‘cheapies’ in your arsenal that you just love?
Max Factor and Cover Girl mascaras.
How about your personal makeup bag - what’s in it?
Mostly Armani.

You have done runway work for Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel, Versace, Heatherette, Anna Sui… Which was your favorite to do?
DIOR!
Who comes up with the ideas for runway make-up?
The looks are created in a collaboration between the designer and the key makeup artist.
What kind of a model do you enjoy working with?
Ones with great skin, groomed eyebrows and models who love what they do!
What’s the wildest thing you’ve ever applied to a face?
Strangest thing would have to be colored sand!

Are there any beauty faux pas you wish would disappear forever?
Darker lip liner with light lips. The porno look (i.e. black and blonde streaked hair, heavy liner and dark lip liner/light gloss).
A lot of exceptional make-up artists (yourself included) did not go to a make-up school. Is schooling really necessary in your field?
I cannot comment because I didn’t go to makeup school. I do think any art background helps.
Is there anything you wish you had been told, before getting into make-up?
I was told nothing and it’s working out ok for me, so I guess not! :)
What advice would you give to someone looking to break into the field?
Practice practice practice!
What do you think of Marilyn Manson’s makeup?
Not a fan, sorry! ;)

You should have asked her about Robert Smith’s makeup, duh! :P :P :P
(Met her last week end, she’s incredible! And she knows Paris great food better than I do, and I’m living here!)

oh my goodness!
What a great article!
I get told all the time how much people love my makeup and where did I learn it, and I just make it up - and I’m also a graphic designer who didn’t wear makeup till I was 21!
What an awesome woman.
Thanks Doe :)

The makeup in that third photo - amazing & so pretty. I wish we all did our own makeup like that every day - how much happier would the world be if we looked that cute?

That’s funny. I’m a makeup artist with a background in graphic design too. I guess it doesn’t matter where you learn color theory and art techniques!
