Tales of the Unicorn Queen

R.I.P. Alexander McQueen

Category Inspiration

Today, on February 11th 2010, an intensely talented British designer Alexander McQueen allegedly took his own life. News of his possible suicide shook the world days before London Fashion Week and weeks before he was about to unveil his new collection. He was 40 years old.

I didn’t know where to sort this post, which category would be most appropriate for an obituary. And then it hit me: Inspiration. That’s what Alexander was, is, and always will be to people in the fashion world and beyond. Alexander’s designs entertained, shocked, inspired and influenced us in ways we cannot imagine. They made us laugh, made us cry, made us question, made us re-think. There is truly no other designer who dared tread on the fashion terrains McQueen so bravely stomped on.

My favorite performer, Lady Gaga, must be in tears. She, alongside many other fashion-forward celebrities such as Bjork & Rihanna, incorporated his edgy, thought-provoking designs into their work.

All of a sudden, it’s quiet in fashion. Let’s take a few moments of silence to remember this visionary. R.I.P. Alexander McQueen.

  • Miz says:

Totally shocked and upset – he was a true artist and innovative soul. The fashion world will indeed be a quieter one without him.

  • SaffronSugar says:

I have never cried over someone I didn’t know, but now I’m bawling like a kid.

    God fucking damn it.

  • Janey says:

I saw this when you retweeted Gala Darling. It’s a horrible day for fashion. Sad for his family and friends.

  • Jenn says:

    Awful…just awful

He was KILLLED.Research it.It’s the most obvious death they have done.

So far, his death is not considered ‘suspicious’ by the police, but we’ll see what happens.

  • Zane says:

I’m in shock. such a creative person, who was one of the most innovative in the business. something must have been truly wrong inside him. though it never showed, with all his amazing creations. I’m positive that Alexander McQueen will live on regardless.

  • Annie says:

I have never really looked into his creations, but for any person to take their own life is always a tragedy, especially an artist. It seems to me that things that happen to talented artists always hit me harder, as an artist myself.

I am making no sense today, even to myself.

  • Maggie says:

This is how the world ends. I might seem dramatic, but McQ deserves the drama.

  • SadFashionista says:

This is such a sad day for the fashion world.

  • Allyssa says:

I was so shocked when I heard this! What an inspiring and fantastical designer he was! I really feel as though part of the fashion world has passed with him. I wish more designers were as out-there and creative with their showings.

  • anarpmendes says:

Aw, first thing I though was wtf because I though it was a joke, but then keep reading…
    Sadness :(

  • Kendall says:

    : (
    This is terribly sad.

  • Heathre says:

    Rock In Peace Mr. McQueen.

Although I don’t know much about him or his work, I have seen some of his creations and they are rock n’ roll. Inspiration is very much the perfect word.

  • Tara says:

McQueen will truely be missed. He is a huge inspiration to me as a future designer. I’ve felt the darkness that consumes you when you think about suicide and even attempt it. But I always hope that people seriously consider what they’re doing to themselves and their familes/friends. It’s very hard to get out of that feeling and it’s a shame no one was able to notice it in time and help him. RIP<3

Yes. I think many creative people (like you and me) have a deep darkness inside… it’s up to us to realize that our vision is too important, too precious to deprive the world of. We’ve got to fight the darkness within and just keep sharing and sharing.

I almost had a heart attack right now when I saw this. I was just thinking about him late last night, I found it odd I couldn’t get his face out of my mind.
I was just getting into his work and the 1st runway show I ever saw saw (video of- in it’s entirety)on his site.
    He was genious.

  • Lana Gabonna says:

    We will always remember him.

His inspiring clothing line, his shoes worn in “Bad Romance”, and in Glee, Kurt protected his Alexander McQueen sweater.
He will go down in history for his magnificent mind, designs, and overall himself. For he was one designer who not only went outside of the box, he created a new box outside of the original.
He may not understand the mourning we will all contribute, but in us, he will always be designing his new line of genius in our hearts.

Live on, Mr. McQueen. We will always remember you.

Just this morning i saw his S/S 10 collection on TV. It made me change my entire outfit and makeup before school, I was so inspired! He was always my favourite designer, and I’m still crying over the news. Thoughts go out to family, friends and all whom appreciated his art.

  • kagitsune says:

I could hardly believe it when I heard. I love McQueen’s unparalleled mix of classic and avant garde, gothic and haute couture. He was a big influence on my own designs…

  • Abbey says:

    so upsetting ):

  • Katharine says:

I’m so sad… I can barely believe it! I thought it was a joke at first…
    RIP

  • Reaper says:

I am in complete and utter shock. He was such a huge influence to my fashion endeavors and I admired his work so much.
I always maintained that I would get him to design a gown for me for my first movie premiere once I hit it big as a director… And now I will never get his chance. I’m writing a long blog post in dedication to him.
He will be sorely missed by the fashion community. If I weren’t so shocked I’d be in tears.
My condolences to his family. I wish him well in the afterlife.

  • tokidoki says:

This upsets me. I’ve been following his work since the 90s when I had subscriptions to every American fashion magazine possible. He was one of the most creative and innovative designers of our era. He will be greatly missed. :(

  • rest in peace indeed, for peace it must have been what he was looking for … if only extreme talent, respect from ones’ peers, business and financial success, and loving friends and family was enough … the fashion world has lost one of its brightest lights.

Awesome! I usually end up DIYing bags and skirts. Shoes never really occured to me! I remember you mentioning Raquel Reed doing something similar to a pair of shoes on the ONSD photoshoot :D

You commented on the wrong entry. I was pretty confused when all I saw at first was “Awesome!”

  • Rosie says:

I logged online for comfort after I found out my mother’s godfather, who was a bit like a great uncle had died, and I found out that Alexander McQueen had died. Today is a sad day.

  • Jillybuff says:

I was shocked when I found out. My mother had to repeat it at least 3 times, and I nearly cried.

His visions were so unique and precious! No one can take his place or fill his shoes. He was a glorious designer and I’m going to miss seeing his work SO much.

  • Mandy says:

it’s really tragic I read your galadarling RT on Twitter and I was also hoping it wasn’t true! he was such a beautiful talented person and we were truely lucky to share that :(

  • Sarah says:

Please PLEASE do not state as fact that he killed himself. The fact of the matter at this point is that they do not know. All that has been said is that his death is not suspicious.

The only sites I’ve seen saying he committed suicide are the gossip blogs, and your site is definitely not that.

PLEASE don’t perpetuate a rumor. We’ll know for sure soon enough.
