I don't love my last name, it's clunky and ugly sounding. My husband has a lovely last name. It's his though, the one he got when he was born. Same as mine. So, no change for me, that would be unthinkable. Our daughter has his name on purely aesthetic grounds. No one cares, no one worries about this stuff in Scotland. You all get so worked up (I'm saying this in an affectionate tone...) and it really doesn't matter what your name is. You're married, you're the parents of the kid, the rest is irrelevant and incidental. Do what makes you happy!

I absolutely love this post! My former partner and I used to get into this argument regularly. He was extremely proud of his last name and family and to wanted me to be just as enthusiastic. Unfortunately for him, his family and I didn't see eye to eye, and the thought of becoming a (insert their last name here) gave me this feeling of being suffocated. Plus, my last name is extremely powerful and is a source of confidence. Seriously, how could I give up a last name like Slaughter?

I don't like my partner's family at all, and they don't like me, so I would never change my name to theirs. I think my partner and I will choose a new name..

I've always felt that I wouldn't want to change my name. Bronwen Elizabeth Devonshire just sounds too good, as far as my ears are concerned. I'd probably settle for a hyphen... IF, and ONLY if, his last name sounds good with the rest of mine. Heh.
