Socks and Sandals

Category Makeup Tutorials

Is there such a thing as collectible socks?!

Not in a billion years would I think that a pair of socks could bring me so much joy. I’ll be the first to admit I’m a hosiery junkie with over 50 pairs of socks and tights stashed away in my drawer. I just cannot picture a good outfit without some kind of interesting legwear! These BetseyJohnson socks are just so damn special – I mean, where else will you see a Warhol-esque face staring at you from somebody’s ankle??

Everyone’s heard of the socks and sandals rule – a big fashion no-no. But lately I find myself more eager than ever to commit this faux pas! If done right, socks with sandals can look brilliant together and make an outfit exponentially more fun!

KEEP ‘EM GUESS?ing

with Guess? heels via Solestruck

Pink/purple leopard print + black shoes = the bomb! The print is rather busy, so pair it with a simpler, sleeker shoe – something that wouldn’t obstruct the bows on the side. Best worn with: black strappy dress with a ruffled skirt.

MOD-ELISTA

with United Nude ‘Eamz’ heels

Your love for pop art and mod will come together in this cream & gold ensemble. Or, if you’re feeling less daring, try paring these socks with simple black heels – just remember, no strap, you don’t want it to  interfere with the design.

JUST KEDDIN’

with Pro-Keds

Bright yellow sock with rose pattern? Yes please! These socks that can be used to make a casual look appear dressier, and a stuffy outfit more fun. Best worn with: shorts or a short skirt.

LICENSE TO FRILL

Dainty roses and satin shoes make for a perfect ‘going out’ look. Love the signature hot pink toe  peaking out. Best worn with: a bright green satin dress and green nail polish – and you’re ready to hit the town!

You can get these at BetseyJohnson.com. They are $20 for 2 pairs and there are other styles too!

Deerlings: what do you think of wearing socks with sandals?

Is saw these on your flickr the other day and even though socks with those types of shoes tends to be something of general dislike, I adore these.
    Especially the last two.

  • Annabel says:

Dog with a fluro pink afro. Need I say more

  • tokidoki says:

I don’t like the socks with sandles look. Looks fine with the keds or closed toe and back shoes but not with sandles. I think tights or bare legs would look a lot better with sandles.

And I love knee highs. I own a ton of them. My favorite are my black and red hello kitty ones that I wear with my kickball outfit (my all girls team colors are red, black & silver) But most of the time when it’s hot & humid out I stick with bare legs.

  • Sasa says:

I love how nice the MOD-elista and the eamz heels look together.
And althought I don’t like sneakers, the third look is super fresh and summerish. Nice!

  • I absolutely love these! I would definitely wear (ankle) socks with heels (I already do it with thigh-high socks) if I had the right combination.

  • erin says:

I don’t like this look at all, I don’t think there is ever a time you can “dress up” socks with your heels.

  • cindy says:

Sorry Doe, but this just looks bad no matter how cute the socks

  • Annie says:

I’m surprised at how much I like this, actually :]

  • Lisa Marie says:

I love socks! I collect them, but I’m the type to wear them mismatched haha.

  • Katy says:

Where did you get those pro-keds?! I’m in love with the colors and have been searching everywhere for them!

  • Hope says:

    I think it’s cute

  • Kati says:

Where did you get those “Eamz” heels? They’re fabulous!
I love stockings and socks; I have a drawer bursting with them. I can’t bring myself to get rid of any!

  • Kelli says:

Since I’m usually way too lazy to paint my toenails and I’m blessed/cursed with pretty small feet, I have a huge collection of girlie socks from the children’s department, which I pair with open-toed and peep-toed shoes.

Tip: Costco is a GREAT place to pick up colorful kids’ socks. They come in multi-packs for about $9. If you want to mix masculine and feminine, they usually have pretty awesome socks with dinosaurs, footballs, or bulldozers as well.

  • Nena says:

I love to wear socks with sandals,i love to play with fashion no-no`s a lot.Im not in for the boring and super safe looks

  • Nicki says:

I usually prefer tights, but I love the socks + keds combination, very cute =).

  • Ariel Grimm says:

I almost bought a pair of white lace ankle socks the other day, but decided to pass. My new favorite pair of socks look like a black witch’s shoe with a gold buckle and purple & green striped tights pattern!

  • Chelsea says:

Ah the Eamz…those have been my dream shoes for a few years now. I’m actually hoping on using my wedding as an excuse to buy some =p

on the sock note though, I’m not a big fan of them even though the socks are cute. Socks and sandals remind me of when I would wear them as a child, you know, the bobby socks with sandals look. Nooo thanks!

I went through this phase a few years ago. I wore pastel ankle socks with heels to work – everything else would be quite corporate & grey with this one little sign of individuality…

I really love the marilyn socks, they are awesome!

  • Rosie says:

Those are so lovely! I don’t have any socks nearly that gorgeous, but I think I might take my purple socks for a spin with black heels soon.

  • I bought these socks at Century 21 and Loehmann’s for like, what, $10 for two pairs or something! ^_^

  • Åsa says:

I always really liked socks in sandals, it looks so care free and child like. I just found really cute socks completely out of lace without heals or toes, just adorable!

  • Anaïs says:

Hmm, I love it. The last one is just simply awesome.
I have some good socks (flashy green, blue-red-white striped, electric blue etc.) which I pair with simple black heels. It makes me get odd looks but hey, I like it!

  • suzyspellbound says:

Aces! I love this look and even sported a version of it on my wedding day! Lacey white socks with ivory satin MJ’s with diamond strap! You have reminded me to try this out again as some of my shoes are not comfy without a sock and its too hot to where tights!

  • Miranda says:

Have you ever been to sockdreams.com !? I love this site. They have so many interesting socks!

    Stephanie Reply:

Yes! Sockdreams is amazing and totally deserve some Doe Deere love! Not only are their products great, talk about some tremendous customer service!

  • Renee says:

    I love it!

I’m very often guilty of the socks’n berkenstocks look as I’m often too lazy to go find my other shoes.

I found the cutest batch of neon colored ankle socks at Costco the other day that I’ve been wearing with EVERYTHING.

It’s fun, and if YOU feel good that’s the main thing :)

  • Stephanie says:

Love this look, but people seem to be against it for somme reason. Better than some other trends that have been around lately.

  • Perthro says:

You might like kimonoHIME then, even if you don’t want to/can’t afford to dress up in full kimono fashion, they’ve been doing socks with sandals since the invention of tabi. And today they come in all kinds of cute patterns for only a few bucks a pair on Ebay!

    http://www.lacarmina.com/blogpics/090127_kimono3.jpg

I wear patterned tabi with platform flipflops and knee/thigh-highs with all other shoes. ^_~

  • Bonniee:) says:

Well, I love the socks/sandals thing even more when you do it!

    Awesome Doe. :D

  • Emmeline says:

I think Rhiannon of Liebemarlene Vintage does this really well: http://liebemarlene.blogspot.com/2010/06/iris-garden.html

And p-s, my new sock-related obsession is sock garters: http://www.etsy.com/listing/48864102/swanclothing-summer-lace-sock-garters-in

  • Crystal says:

Betsey Johnson truly has amazing socks! I am guilty of this fashion no-no and I don’t care! I love it!

Also, if you check around TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Ross Dress for Less you can get a 4 pack for like 6 or 7.99$! They also have knee high ones!

  • Rhiannon says:

I think the socks/sandals look is really adorable – so long as the lines, colours and styles are right. I don’t think socks should be at ankle height, they should be a bit above, like you’ve done! I was thinking of this post the other day whilst out shopping (surprise!), because I was looking at a billboard in Dotti (www.dotti.com.au) – and they had socks and sandals together! So, yes – here in Australia I think some fashion stores are embracing the look. :)

Though, there is also the train of thought that you can wear anything – so long as it’s styled nicely. If it’s fun and you love it, why not go for it? :)

  • I’m a milliner/indie fashion designer, and Betsey Johnson is one of my fashion idols. I think her darling sock collection is the ONE exception to the “no socks with sandals” rule, and I adore how they look with the Poetic License heels! Gorgeous.

  • Diem says:

I have alwayd said that socks are underrated and underappreciated! I also collect socks and I’m very weak for over-knees. So yes, I, most of the time, like socks in sandals. :)

  • courtney! says:

    hee hee hee!!

i wear huge steel-toed workboots outside in the sun everyday for work. despite frequent applications of sunscreen, i have a fierce boot-tan and often have a line of unwashable dirt ground into the top of my foot.
i always wear socks with my sandles, heels and non-work shoes!

socks with lace tu-tus are my favourites.

  • Suzanne C. says:

What you do with socks and sandal heels is genius! I just wished I lived in a place where wearing socks more than 2-3 months a year made any sense. Sometimes it feels like a blanket in summer to wear socks here in september =(

  • Eeso says:

I think when you wear socks with heels and sandals it makes your legs look shorter. I don’t like it because you really do have nice legs. Cute socks and cute shoes… they just don’t go well together.

  • Noa says:

I was originally really against them but think I might be warming up to them a tiny bit…slowly…
