Sprucing up clothes with fun buttons
Category: How To
Here’s a quick DIY tutorial how you can breathe life into an otherwise boring piece of clothing with fun trims. The quickest way to change the personality of a shirt or jacket is to change its buttons. I had this selection of colorful trims from CookieParty:

I love the turquoise on this jacket, but it originally came with boring, invisible buttons. Now it’s cupcake fabulousity!

I might just go ahead and add a bunch of tiny blue bows all over the jacket – what do you think? :)
Deerlings: what’s your favorite DIY trick?

I really just love making my own clothes. I got a sewing machine for my 16th birthday, and it’s pretty much the best gift I have ever received. I made my friends some polarfleece hats with animal ears (foxes, bunnies, cats, etc), and I’m going to make my boyfriend a pair of mittens shaped like fox heads.
When it comes to glitzing up already-made clothes, I particularly like fringe. I really love beaded fringe, but it’s very hard to wash without destroying it . . . I’m very inspired by flapper fashion, so I love stuff that moves when I shimmy!

I got a Disney Princess cardigan from the thrift store the other day, it has a pattern of roses with gold trim and glitter gold buttons…as cute as they are I’d love to replace them with some castle, glass slipper, mirror, and maybe a chariot button…

Not really a “trick” but I love to knit accessories that are hard to find in stores, such as funky hats, arm warmers, and toe-less socks :-)
I love the freedom of deciding exactly how it will be shaped and I can have it in any color that I can find in yarn!
Now I think I might try knitting a sweater with fun buttons…

Oh yes I think you should add some blue bows, maybe a couple on the sleeve would be cute, and on the shoulders as well, as suggested above :D
I like to add press-studs to things! They’re useful when you want to hold things together or make interesting shapes in fabric… but maybe I just like doing them up…

It’s great Doe! Sooo much less boring now!I nedd to get some of those cupcake buttons for myself!
I’d have to say that my favorite DIY tricks are embroidering my clothes, painting them and of course making my own.
I embroidered a jacket with a pink unicorn on the back, little flowers along the seams and on the collar, and cute little unicorn that I sewed on for the buttons,it’s magical :]
I love the way people look at me when I wear it,because I love being so much different than they are.
I made myself a sparkly deep blue dress. Blue compliments my eyes and I’m in LOVE with all that is sparkly, so it’s perfect!
Another DIY trick I have is putting little gems or sparkle paint onto my high heels and sneakers! I have many pairs of boring single color heels, most are neon shades of pink, yellow, blue, purple, etc.,some are black.I put little gems onto them, usually different colors than the actual shoes, and then they are lovely. I’ve done this to my pairs of Converse sneakers as well :] It’s a nice way to make boring shoes eye-catching,fun,and full of GLEE!
Much Love,
Susan

That jacket looks very cute! I like to make old things into completely new things. That way I don’t lose things with sentimental value, but they also get a new lease on life.

I love to not only make my own clothes, but buy plain fitted t-shirts and go fabric paint crazy on them. Anything from random nerd/video-game humor, to cool designs I create.

Sometimes even just a quickie hem will make a brand new article of clothing. I also like to make a temporary change and just layer difference pieces I’ve never tried before :)

Changing buttons is a wonderful idea. To save money you can even go to garage sales or vintage/resale shops and get a whole tin of buttons so you can change out all sorts of things.
And to alter that top, I’d go for bows on the shoulders and some cute sparkly or shiny trim around the bottom edge.

Ahh I want those cupcake buttons! XD
They are absolutely adorable! :)
And I think you should put a bow somewhere unexpected, like behind the collar or something!

The jacket looked so much better before imo :(
I think we’re polar opposites. I would have taken off the blue trimmings and replaced them with beige.

LOL I think the Jacket is done. Umm I haven’t really done DIY in a while I used to decorate my beackpacks pretty elaborately in High school, add studs to things and switch out the laces in my converse for awesome ones I found at Hot Topic. But a lot of girls did that at that time, I might have been able to count the girls in my grade who personalized their things in that way on one hand but really it was going on everywhere so it wasn’t that individual.
I really want to take it to the next level but I’ve been trying to figure out how to assemble my sewing machine for like 3 yrs so I haven’t done anything. You’ve actually made me feel guilty now that I haven’t put my own personal touch on anything but jewlery in so long!
