Tales of the Unicorn Queen

Told you I would post every outfit, good or bad. ;) This is my vacation no-makeup-messy-hair look.

  • Jacket & sweater: $1 sale at Jet Rag in LA
  • Skirt: Forever 21
  • Tights: Ellen Tracy
  • Shoes: keds

We are kicking it in Sacramento (Citrus Heights, to be exact) for a few days with Mark’s family before heading back home to NY. I’m going through a style transformation prompted by the realization that I’ve become too comfortable within my own style – instead of being creative, I’m clinging to familiar patterns, cuts and colors in my wardrobe. I decided that the best way to battle this is to open myself up to everything I’ve always feared:

  • high-waisted pants
  • denim
  • stuff that isn’t fitted at the waist or has a poofy skirt
  • heels below 3″
  • asymmetrical/off-shoulder cuts
  • bare legs
  • florals
  • neutrals (!)
  • leopard print
  • anything that can be classified as “hippie”

Suburban thrift-stores are the best – lots of people donate but most are too lazy to dig through stuff – as a result, you can get some real gems here for cheap. And as long as we’re talking “fashion faux pas” it’s the land of plenty!!! I went down to Good Will and tried on some denim jackets & pants, loose-fitting tops, florals, ugly 80s sweaters, even a pair of overalls (haha! true story!). Some things looked downright atrocious but most, to my own surprise, actually worked! It felt therapeutic to break out of my fashion prison and let myself be inspired again. We might be in for some real doozies, haha, but I’m ok with that. :)

Deerlings: what are your fashion fears? Would you ever consider taking them on?

well… i recently did face my fears… harems-pants… but theyre so easy to coord. easy to dress up and easy to dress down. still feel embarassed by the fact that they originally are mens pants though…

First of all Congrats on the makeup line. Due to illness I got behind on your blog.

    My fashion fears:

My short hair, it’s the length you have it now. Due to the meds the Dr gave me, I lost my past the waist hair, it’s growing but I just don’t know how to deal with it short, so I useing a lot of wigs.

    zebra print
really bright colors (trying to get more color in my life)
    flat shoes
    tights
    any thing sleevless
    Peasant syle clothes
    Turoquise jewerly
Pandora bracelets (They are all the craze, but I just don’t see why)
Any thing that my mother would wear. :)

Haha, I live only an hour away from there!! Next time you’re in the Sac region you have to come a bit North to Grass Valley, it’s a beautiful town with some wonderful thrift stores! <33 You look lovely, too.

Wow, your skin looks amazing- what kind of skincare products do you use?

  • Hannah says:

Color. I’m absolutely terrified of colors.

  • Lauren says:

Unfortunately I have to suffer wearing an oversized t-shirt, khakis and a baseball cap as my work uniform every single day, so fashion has sort of taken a backseat to paying rent, but I consider leopard print to be a sort of signature for me.

I’m actually afraid of wearing stuff that exposes my thighs or shows a lot of my chest; not because either body part looks bad, it’s just that I’ve always dressed very modestly (even matronly; I remember having a black floor length, long sleeved dress in high school. it was from Casual Corner and I just thought it looked nice) so showing off my body is a bit scary for me.

  • cami says:

anything up to the neck. i have small breasts so i think that just makes me look flatter. and denim. idk why i just hate denim. anything that has a company name across the chest i think its stupid and pointless and against freedom of expression.

  • Kate says:

You look so great with short hair. Really! :)

If you ever have the time I’d love it if you could post your Daily/Everyday routine makeup. You do the “low key” look so well yet still stylish. Ha, that probably sounds creepy.
