RETRO-INSPIRED MAKEUP
This retro-inspired look is all about the strong brows, over-sized eyes and bright-orange lips. False lashes and eyeliner are a-must!
Eyeshadow: Troubadour, Medusa, Top Hattie magic dust
Lipstick/blush: My Beautiful Rocket
FACE
Apply matte foundation and dab orange lipstick onto the apples of your cheeks, blending with a finger. You can also use orange-tinted blush if you have it – coordinating lips and cheeks will help bring the look together, and make orange lipstick worn on any complexion! I applied bronzer under my cheek bones to help them stand out even more. Define brows with a dark brown brow cake or eyeshadow – I recommend doing the brows first because they will dictate the shape of the eye.
EYES
Prime the eyelids with a primer (stay tuned for Lime Crime‘s revolutionary Candy Eyed Eyeshadow Helper coming this fall!). Apply Troubadour magic dust onto the center of the eye and over the crease. Define crease, outer corners and line lower lid with Medusa. Dab Top Hattie on inner corners, brow bone and just barely onto the center of the ball for a high-light. Using a black pencil, darken outer corners close to the lashes and fill in the waterline 2/3 through – this will elongate the eye.
Now let’s put on lots of eyeliner! You can use liquid or gel for this, whatever gives you that thick, fat line. First dab close to the lashes and then start building up the thickness – don’t be afraid to go bold! Wing it out almost as far as where your brows end. Apply false lashes.
LIPS
Last, and most glamorous step, is lipstick. A lot of people are afraid of orange but it’s actually a color that works on almost everybody, as long as you coordinate it with your cheeks. I recommend applying My Beautiful Rocket directly from the tube onto clean, exfoliated lips – skip lip balm. This will help the color really hold on to your lips, resulting in some serious lasting power. Voila!
Deerlings: which look would you like to see me do next?

HOTTTT
oh, but when exactly will the primer be available? that’s what inquiring minds want to know!

Its from PuppyCatMeow; duh. i should’ve read more ;P
I LOVE this look although it looks a little more 60s then 50s to me. I love the retro 60s look and it’s a look I do often. The only thing I don’t like about this look is the light blue tights and white shoes. I know you most likely picked blue tights since it matches your make up is the complementary color to orange but it seems to cut off the outfit instead of adding to it. My personal opinion is that fushia or lime green tights would have worked better with a different color shoe. Or maybe even another shade of blue like teal.

You know what, I think you might be right. :)
Pretty! Love the eye make-up.
wow! I never thought that blue + orange could look so good!! love it!
The make up makes you look super powerful and I love the hair bow
I love the makeup and hair!
Dude, I am soooooo going to give that make-up a try for class tomorrow! I’ve got UD’s Minx, Goddess, and Yeyo shadows and a black pencil, it should work! I don’t have any black liquid liner, though… guess I’ll have to do my best with a pencil!
It’ll be my fisrt attempt at one of your looks! Yay!
Oh, and at wearing a bold eye out in public… wonder what people’ll think… :D

Okay, so my attempt at this look was… well… a complete and total failure; buy, hey, I wore turquoise out in public. I’m terrified of turquoise, which is a problem since I’ve found myself with so much if it. UD vegan pallet- I ordered one, got a defect w/ two Minx’s, they sent me a proper pallet and let me keep the old one. So now I have three things of Minx and no clue what to do with it all! So, yeah, the more looks with turquoise that better for me!
I’d also love to see some goth-inpired works from you!
Oh, and see what you’d do with browns. >;P You said you wanted to stop avoiding in neutrals! So let’s see it! I think you’d totally rock it like no one else!
Your eyebrows look especially amazing here! Love the blue/orange color combo, and now i might have to invest in some orange lipstick. You are stunning, Doe. Your tutorials are my favorite posts on your blog.

Thanks Yulia! I’d better keep them coming then :)
Do some 60′s inspired looks! I would love that. My Beautiful Rocket looks gorgeous. =)
You look fabulous Doe! The 50′s is perhaps my favorite era for fashion and I really like it when people put a modern twist on it. I like the color combination too, orange and blue who’d have thought! I don’t always go for bold lips but when I want to I use orange. I also like the blue tights it completes the outfit:)
Since you asked how about a fall inspired look, perhaps with purple?^_^
I’d love to see a 60′s mod look or a Victorian look with a retrofuture twist!
I love it! You almost look like Lady Gaga! SMEXY!

Gaga likes her strong brow and lashes for sure!
Wow… so Valley of the Dolls and AWESOME! I cannot wait to try this out, and I am so unbelievably excited for the eyeshadow primer.
LOVE IT!
You look like you should be an extra on Scooby Doo! :-D A cross between Velma and Daphne!
Beautiful stuff as usual.
I think it must be the defined brows but you remind me a lot of your sister in the last two photos.
Oh my goodness you remind me sooooo much of Regina Spektor in the second to last picture!! (that’s a definite compliment) :))
Since you asked….
I’d like to see some companion looks. I love the big, bold, makeup fantasies you come up with, but it might be nice once in a while to say, “Here’s a fantastic night-out make up extravaganza, and here’s a second look that uses the same inspiration in a work/daytime appropriate way.” I know it wouldn’t be the most exciting way of looking at make-up, but it is more accessible, and it’d let your readers try things out without having to worry about looking professional.

Hi Kat,
I’ll admit, this isn’t the first time I heard this request. The thing is, I view makeup as a tool of transformation, not just concealment or subtle enhancement. So it’s really not my cup of tea. It wouldn’t feel right teaching something I’m not particularly excited about.
The good news is that there are plenty other websites that will teach you how to do a more ‘normal’, wearable look!

Honestly, I work as a professional insurance agent, and though corporate environments do tend to suppress such self expression, I’ve worn limecrime shadows to work every day for at least the past six months. Never once have I been reproached or even looked down upon(Quite the opposite, actually. A lot of people love the colors!)
I get that you don’t want people to look at you oddly, but in many professional settings, I think it even more important to express yourself. You actually will be more successful if you are unafraid to be yourself. I recently have been able to get a job in a better department, and I went into my interviews wearing these colors with no hesitation. It’s the little things that make you stand out, and if an employer or boss is more likely to remember you, they are more likely to hire you.
I’m not saying paint a rainbow on and go to work like that, but don’t feel like you can’t wear a bold statement just because that’s what others say.
Personally, I just wear my limecrime just like I would any other shadow, just up to the crease in my eye and extended outward like a cat’s eye look.
My best advice: pick the most vibrant color you like and experiment! You’ll definitely find a style you like and find professional.

Thanks Meggles for your opinion on limecrime in the office. :) I agree with you. I normally wear my limecrime on weekends because I have more time to play. But perhaps I might do some colour for Tomorrow Casual Friday and go from there.
What colour clothes do you normally wear to this office? Do you coordinate with the make-up? Or wear mostly blacks and greys but with colour makeup. I’m interested to hear more if you’d like to share. :)

For the most part, my favorite colors to wear are yellow and green. I do coordinate the color I wear with the color eyeshadow for that day. For the most part the bottoms I wear are black and grey. I usually wear a tank top with a cardigan over it and the eyeshadow is the same color as the tank.
But the way Doe uses lime criminal in her rose epoch look actually works really well with siren. I do it all the time with my favorite white and red polka dot skirt. It’s enough to get a very unique and noticeable look without using very much at all.

Agreed – I either do mine the same as yours, or wear it just as eyeliner with the rest of the lid naked. Sometimes I’ll do a subtle 2 color look (IE – circus girl in the corner blended with something else on the rest). I’ve never, ever had anyone think it was unprofessional.
I try to go with something that complements my outfit, but not nesisarily matching.
I am a huge nail polish addict, and will often do the same with my nails, although for a working week that I need to be more “grownup” I’ll use a nude, grey (very trendy right now) or taupe and forgo the holographic or sparkle polish. My favorite right now is a shade the color of a tiffanys box – what could be more classy?

Agreed! I wear bright makeup on a regular basis to the office. I also have pink hair–and the CEO loves it. I like to think that we’re moving away from the idea that everyone must look like corporate clones at work, and I’m more than happy to give it a push!
I think the trick is figuring out where to draw the line. I keep the look neat and tidy. If it’s something I’d wear to a club or show (massive false lashes, tons of glitter, etc) I’m not going to rock it at work. But it’s really just a matter of sitting down and playing with the colours you love.
You’re skin is flawless. You should make a post about your daily routine xox

Oh, deer. I wish there was a magic shortcut to clear skin, but the truth is that it’s largely genetics, and to a smaller extent diet and routine. I have pretty good skin (on my face anyway) that requires minimal care, but I do recommend always washing your face before going to bed. Never sleep with your makeup on.
I would love to see you make a tutorial for the black and purple smokey look you posted pictures of a few weeks ago!

Me too :)
I always love your outfits, but I’m pretty sure that this is one of my all time favourites.
I loved your posts when you were out and about at cool clubs and bars, wearing glamorous clothes and dressing up. I haven’t seen one of those in a long time! :-)
And I also love when you do make-up that borders on the ridiculous like the rainbow unicorn look and the cupcake face – it can be a lot of fun. Most of your looks these days are very ‘wearable’ if you know what I mean.
Keep up the good work!

Haha, those were some days. ;) I kind of decided I don’t like clubbing any more – the music is too loud, I’d much rather engage in a good conversation with a friend.
Don’t worry though, there will be plenty of extreme looks coming out soon. After all, I’m still me! :)
Ooh, I love this! Retro looks are my favorite. And thank you for showing an example of a strong brow that actually looks do-able! I’m all inspired now [:

That’s such a nice thing to say, Jean Marie! xo
Gorgeous! Nice look.
I’d love to see you as an ’80′s disco queen. The makeup for that can be as wild and crazy as the ’80′s were.
I am so glad to see a tutorial! Tutorials are what drew me to your blog in the first place, and they continue to be my favorite part. I am loving the makeup, hair, and coat. Stunning!
I am also pleased that you have started using the lipsticks are cream blush. I didn’t even think of that until you mentioned it a while back. Powder blush colors have been disappointing me lately, as I’m having difficulty finding vibrant ones. So, great tip!
By the way, my orientation for the graduate program I am going in to (doctorate in clinical psychology) started this week. I wore Retrofuturist today, and got compliments from other girls in the program. That made me happy. I am definitely the brightest one there. That is, in terms of makeup–though I hope in brain power, too! haha ;D
love it!
I LOVE THIS LOOK.
I’d love to see you rock a school girl look.
This is such a great look! I am wondering what curling iron/curlers you use, i have hair the same length as yours and have been experimenting with different size curls on a short bob.
This look is sooooo CUTE!!! You should put it on limecrime.com for it’s another inspirational look!!
This look is gorgeous! I adore everything about it!
I’m so excited to try the new primer. Yay!
Keep doing your borws liek this, it’s so striking and it makes you look soooooo incredibly 1000X more gorgeous than you already are!
You look absolutely fantastic, I will definately be trying this one!
I would love to see you to a Mod look, and I agree a professional look would be good too.
Thankyou for all your effort
70s roller rink queen would be an awesome look to do, I think. Huge flippy hair, glittery jumpsuit, sky high lucite platforms, the works! Almost like Charlie’s Angels meets Xanadu. I’d make the makeup a little frosty, too.
I LOVE this look.
Outfit, make up, and hair
Utterly fantastic. I was looking at orange lipstick the other day actually.
Great color. <3
I just…I don't like the hair bow :/
I mean, yeah its a neat idea, I just dislike the choppy ends of it. It looks messy to me.
But thats just personal preference.
I love the soft, voluminous waves in your hair for this look! Did you use a flat iron to get them like that?
This is beautiful! I love the colors, and your brows look incredible!
This is probably my favorite makeup look of yours — ever! It’s absolutely gorgeous!! Women seem to reach for a red lipstick when doing a retro look, and I’ve seen so many black-eyeliner-red-lipstick gals that it’s boring. This look feels VERY retro and is so much more flattering!
Thanks so much for your inspiration. I love how you can turn ANY look into something that will fit your personality, instead of trying to fit your personality into someone else’s mold.
I actually had to stop a moment and ask “Is that actually her?” This is definitely an amazing look on you!
Definitely stealing this look for work tomorrow :D
Wow! Awesome Doe! You look great. The tutorial was great also with lots of good tips.
Can I ask what foundation you use? Your skin is so flawless <3
oh, your brows look stunning! this is possibly one of my most favorite looks, if not THE favorite. i really wish i could pull off makeup like you can!
blush of any sort and/or lipstick tends to overwhelm my face, no matter what kind, color, opacity, etc. and i have trichotillomania so i have this awful habit of pulling out my hair–most often my eyebrows! so i’m typically left with sparse, spotty brows everyday. it’s awful. ):
i don’t even have lashes mainly because of the trichotillomania, but also because everyone including myself thinks i look a million times better without them. figure that one out, haha!
but i am told by any and everyone that i have a very unique kind of beauty. i’ve even been asked if i was a model, surprisingly! it makes me happy to know that even a person like me–whose facial traits seem combined together in a way that’s against the norm–can be regarded as beautiful in today’s society. (:
I HAVE LOTS MY WORDS BECAUSE THISIS SO AMAZING!!
hehe
I love this look!!!
The colors are amazing!!! The makeup is amazing and that belt is really nice ♥
haha that’s strange because the other day i decided that i was in love with the 50′s (well basically the 20th century fashion)(also i’d just watched Grease) and created a 50′s outfit, but it was more pastel based and not as all-round cool. but i agree it seems more 60′s to me. i love all your looks, and i wish i was ginger!
i love this look on you!
This is Gorgeous (as per usual, though I think this might be one of my favorites)!! I can’t wait for the primer to be released!
xx
I’m in love with that coat.
Ah, this is so beautiful! I wish I had the guts to dress as bold as this/wear such intense makeup. I’m too nervous of people’s reactions, lol. I think it’s cool you do, though : )
