Style Diary: Pearl-Horn Twonicorn
Category: How To, Style Diary

I have a hard time finding clothes I like in stores, so you can imagine what I go through with accessories: nothing, NOTHING comes even close to what I’d want to wear! I’m just not drawn to the safe retail ‘trends’ - once something’s been mass-produced, it loses its appeal to me. So yea, you won’t be seeing me sporting a black headband with a fake flower any time soon…
Part out of love for DIY, part out of necessity, I find myself resorting to making my own clothes and accessories. I can spend hours (and hundreds of dollars!) at a craft store, marveling at all the stuff they have – from scissors, to pieces of felt to fimo clay. When I saw styrofoam cones on a shelf, I immediately wanted them on my head! That’s how the idea of a Twonicorn was born – because two horns are better than one!

Pearl-Horn Twonicorn
Below is a quick breakdown of how I did it:
- 2 Styrofoam cones
- Long hair extensions (doesn’t have to be real hair)
- Acrylic paint that matches the hair
- Assorted size pearls
- Needle & thread
- Glue gun
Paint styrofoam the color of the extensions (leave it white if your extensions are white). Braid extensions into one loooong braid, secure ends. Wrap the braid around the cones in a spiral, starting from the top. Secure with glue gun. Sew beads onto the hair. Voila! You have two beautiful horns. :) As for how they stay on – there are lots of ways to do this. I made two high pigtails, attached the horns with pins around the perimeter and then wrapped my own hair around the base.
More pictures with the horns can be found here and here!

Super cute!
To sew on the pearls, do you actually sew them to the styrofoam through the hair or just weave in and out of the braided part without connecting to the styrofoam?

Cool.
I was thinking that a Princess Leia bun type thing might work too. Just find styrofoam balls and cut them in half and wrap the hair around.

Cool! I don’t think I’d ever wear ones quite like that, or have reason to. But maybe mini ones with coloured rhinestones? Now my imagination is running wild with ways to put my own twist on this. =)

oh yeah and I was surprised the perals were beads, I thought you were going to say they were pushpins with pearl ends. That could work too (as long as they don’t fall out).

Hmmm that’s not a bad idea either – if you can find push pins in different sizes!

I wish there were some curved styrofoam cones so I could dress up like Taurus! Or perhaps a lady Minotaur?

You can form them from Fimo or gypsum (is that the right word?)-tapes if you want them to be bigger!

I had a feeling you used cones but I also thought they were push pins with white balls at the end.

I agree. About 6 years ago I had a dread hair fall making business and I used to wear dread falls all the time (I had them in many many many different colors) but once I started seeing cheaper versions of them at Hot Topic and Halloween stores I was done with them.

Beautiful! I don’t know if I could pull those off (I tend to be much more experimental with clothes than accessories..) but you look splendid with them, and they’re so well-made!

I think this is by far one of my favorite posts of yours in a long time! I love the idea of making these to wear with a Mardi Gras costume… and there really are so many alternatives you could do with them.
The cones never crossed my mind when I saw the pictures, even though I’ve used them in many craft projects!

Wow, this is so freakin’ innovative. I was completely convinced that they were your own, real hair done up in some magical intricate way! Very nice. I have such a fetish for pearls strung through hair…

I may try this, but I think I will put them on a head band.

“once something’s been mass-produced, it loses its appeal to me”
I think that this is a bit of a ridiculous comment to make. I can relate with not being fond of trends and being out of step with the mainstream, but I do not think that you should swear of wearing something just because other people could too.
I appreciate your honestly, and if you do not like anything, fair enough. But I don’t think that you should give up something that you like for the sole reason of it being mass produced.
I realize that you may have other reasons, but I would just like to state my opinion in the matter.
Otherwise, this is a very nice tutorial (and hey, I saw a styrofoam whale in town last week, and talked myself out of getting as I would have nothing to do with it. Now I shall have a trusty whale hair ornament.)

YESSS! I make all of my bows and I made a cute pair of earrings. I figure why buy something when I can make it and then it’ll be unique?

Hi there, first time commenter long time reader, so hopefully I haven’t just missed you mentioning it before.
Are you a fan of the simpsons?
There is one episode in seasons 20 in which lisa and her new friend Juliet write a story about an imaginary kingdom called Equalia in which there is a twonicorn – always reminds me of you now.
