Summer infatuations

Category Candyfuture, Inspiration

This summer is very exciting for me because I feel my style evolving once again (like it happens every 2 years). This time I’m moving in the direction of candyfuturism – a concept I came up with in response to the dull, sheet-metal-gray depictions of the future we usually see. From the look of things, it’s going to be even more over-the-top & bombastic than my usual style!

A major shift in mentality occurred: I’ve decided to be my own style icon from here on. This means I get to wear only the stuff I’m truly, totally, completely in awe of – no exceptions! Here are my current infatuations, i.e. stuff I spend 5 hours looking up for online in the wee hours of the morning, haha!

Clear everything
Plastic, glass, crystals, vinyl – anything see-through wins my heart. It’s been raining non-stop in NY but it’s ok as long as I have my bubble umbrella.

Mmm, don’t these look like candy? Colorful, plasticy – just how I like it! These Kate Spade sandals are sold out everywhere (boo!)  but if you’re a US10, you might just be in luck!

Anything iridescent, holographic & rainbowy
See these soap bubbles? Aren’t these just pure magic?! I want my entire world to look like this. I just got myself a couple vintage jelly belts on Etsy – oh my!

Stuff to wear on my head
No picture because it’s still in the making. I’m whipping up some insane accessories to be premiered soon (specifically, my birthday party).

Crimped hair
Can’t get enough of it, but have yet to figure out a fast & painless way to do it. Anyone got any ideas?

Holographic nails
In the spirit of candyfuturism, I’m strongly drawn to unusual nail colors such as holo & glitter. I love nail polish in general, it’s such an easy, inexpensive way to boost your mood!

Apartment remodeling
To match my newly found aesthetic, I’m remodeling my entire house. I haven’t decided on the palette yet but I’ll keep you posted. Get ready for a full-blown Doe Deere Kingdom video tour this summer!

Speaking of clear things….you would really like these shoes!

    http://tinyurl.com/muett6

I have that shoe in a bright orange…they’re super comfy.

  • Kristina says:

Lately I’ve fallen in love with China Glaze’s for Audrey, making bows, anything pink, and vintage. >__> I love holographic nail polish, though- I wish my local Sally’s would stock some!

  • Laura says:

You really are a girl after my own heart. Right now I’m adoring paper parsols, eye glitter (midnight cowboy rides again), soap bubbles (have you seen my latest The Gypsy Feet pic?), Yellow nails and yellow eye shadow, giant flowers in my hair…

  • Laura says:

As for crimping, this doesn’t work (quickly) for tiny crimps but it is fast (and you probably already know about it) but braid your hair and run a hot flat iron over it.

  • Kathleen says:

I just started working at a japanese restaurant in february, and now i hate to say it…but i’m addicted to sushi. Everyday all I want is a nice tuna roll. It is in fact very expensive buttt i have a nice 50% to help with that :P In fact i just called my mom and invited her to go get sushi with me on friday, and for my birthday i’m going to the new moving sushi bar near my house :D yayy. Pluss I always try to get people hooked with me, aka my friends family and in fact my co-workers. We are a sushi loving tribe now that is a force to be reckoned with.

  • Kathleen says:

Oh i almost forgot. Ever since I started hanging out with my dads vietnamese girlfriend I have been lovinggg going to chinatown and buying mochi, hichew and of course nail polish. I get opi for 1.50 because she has her nail license :D. i now having a swirling nail polish holder with over 50 nail polishes by china glaze and opi. I feel like my ethnicity is changing from to asian…

  • Ashley says:

I’m in love with OPI’s ‘The Thrill of Brazil’ it’s the brightest, shinyest red I’ve ever used. I love it! I’m really feelin’ various shades of red right now. The brighter the better!

  • korinsama says:

Crimped hair, makes me remember the 90′s tee-hee~ we were doing that with a crimping iron, it took like 20 minutes and everything was done… because on the picture, it really looks like it was done with a crimping iron.

  • Rachael says:

I love bright colors and futuristic looks, too, so I am very excited to see what you come up with. I will have to take a picture of my umbrella for you – it is clear plastic, but has neon rainbow spokes and a neon lime green handle!
For crimping your hair, I only know the iron way or putting your hair in small braids at night and taking them out about a day later.

  • Pmaggs says:

Right now I’m infatuated with rebuilding my wardrobe. For the past couple years I’ve been holding off buying a lot of anything because “I have to lose weight first”. I used to wear a 5 way back in the day, but it’s easier for me to be at a 7 now (well, always, actually).

So my infatuation is to accept myself as I am, and start building my wardrobe at a size 7.

  • Limespark says:

Ooh, this is all super inspiring and I’m intrigued to see your house; I really feel that people don’t take enough risks with their home decor. It’s odd to me, expecially considering home is where we spend most of our time!
And I recommend crimping only the top layers of your hair to save time; it’ll look that same.

  • Patricia Glitter says:

I am in love my my high-cut black linen jacket. It looks very motorcycle-ish.
I also love neon for the summer. I wish it wasn’t a trend that had washed through so quickly.
Frayed edges. I want to take a seam-ripper to everything I own, but I doubt my boss would appreciate the look!

  • PaintHead (jessie) says:

I agree, i don’t look up to anyone when it comes to fashion, i realy don’t read magazines or see what celebs are wearing what, to me i wear what i want, and if i love it, i buy it…Trends come and go , but style is eternal..lol…I’ve always been one to love color, how i dress is not what matches, but what color is missing, some people don’t understand my color creations or how i put colors together, but it’s in my head…and of course i love Candy as well, a candy whore here, and cupcakes, anything sweet, oxoxox…

It is kinda annoying when people think the future is gloomy or full of greys, black and geometric shapes that look uncomfortable to even wear…I think more people are afraid of color then they think..weird……you will never see me in black, LOL!

  • Arika says:

For the last year I’ve been turning my wardrobe into the perfect Fruits wardrobe. Plenty of bright colors, and super thin fabrics to layer together.
And of course plenty of accessories.

  • Shayne Amaral says:

I can’t wait to see what your place will end up looking like. I think most people are afraid of color when it comes to painting walls. My bf and I were very excited when we learned that we were able to paint the walls in our apartment any color we wanted. And the best part my landlord paid for painting supplies when we first moved in. We ended up painting all rooms but one (bathroom) so the money and time we spend got deducted from our rent. Which is good since we didn’t like the colors of the walls when we moved in.

I’m lucky in the fact that my bf and I have the same love for mid century modern design and color (both of us were art majors in college) and we decided we wanted to make our apartment full of color because who can be depressed in a colorful apartment right? And we did it. It was a lot of work and took a few month to do but we painted 4 rooms. We knew we wanted an Asian feel to the bedroom so we painted the walls deep red. It’s actually Ralph Lauren hunter coat red. It’s a really nice shade of red and it changes color depending on the light. And all our bedding is black & white. And we wanted our room to be a relaxing place since it’s main purpose is sleep so we don’t have any computers, radios, tv in it. That would take the focus off sleeping. We painted out computer room bright orange because I love the contrast between orange and pink and I have a pink computer desk and chair from Ikea. Our kitchen was already painted bright blue and yellow but we hated the yellow so we painted over it with a bright apple green color. Then we painted our double parlor a silver gray color but we painted one accent wall with chartreuse. We also took the chartreuse color and painted an art deco mural on one of the silver walls with chartreuse. I plan on painting another mural on another mall in dark gray. It will tie everything together nicely. I love interior decorating. It’s so much fun!

I should see if I can find my apartment pics when I get home from work so I can show you our love for color.

  • Patricia Glitter says:

Darling, you are a worse than a drug-dealer. I took a look at those shoes and couldn’t resist. I should probably join SA (Shoes Anonymous).

  • Katie! says:

Bright colored nail polish! And red, classic lips! Hmm… what else? Well I’m getting married in a little over three weeks, so anything really fancy and classy that goes with our color scheme… :]

  • Jenn says:

When I was a freshie in college, I was obsessed with my roomate’s crimping iron.

I look for them all the time.

The best bet I can find is if you go to somewhere like – Bed, Bath and Beyond, or even Walmart, they have hair iron sets targeted at younger girls, that have changeable plates. I had a set that came with 4 different plates, straight, felt, crimp, and big waves.

So maybe if you find one of those sets, you can use it. They’re usually about 20-30$

  • Variety says:

Shiny things!! Oh how I love them. I’m stuck on shiny things, boots, and COLORS. I finally realized that I’m fully capable of wearing a lime green basketball-fabric tank top with bright orange fishnets and shorts if I darn well please!

  • Rachel says:

I can’t WAIT to see your house!

  • Andrea says:

    ooo! everything looks so pretty!
and an idea for crimped hair would be put your hair alll in braids(big or small depending on how you want your crimps to look) and go over them slowly with a straightening iron a couple times. when it seems like enough take them out and voila! crimped hair :D

  • Kristi says:

I know you are creating your own futuristic style, but keep in mind the main futuristic style concepts such as minimalistic, geometric, metalic, and clean lines. The Bubble umbrella is a very good example that fits a lot of these examples. These are the basics of futuristic style, another easy way to see these illustrated is to be inspired from futuristic, contemporary design (architecture design, furniture design, etc).

  • Kristi says:

And I would highly recommend doing some research about futuristic fashions and the futuristic style.
I love it as well, and I think people should embrace it more. Minimalism is what people should strive for.

  • Jenny says:

That looks so cool! I have a style idea myself, but I haven’t had a lot of time or money for it lately. But here it is:

Monsters! I get my inspirations from things like Where the Wild Things Are and Monsters Inc., as well as Takuya Angel (http://web.mac.com/takuya_angel/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html) and other Fruits fashions. Other things incorporated ito it are horizontal stripes, neon colors, bright, fake fur, big boots, and knitted things. :D

  • Tristain says:

oh oh oh! i too feel a change coming, and yet, mine is in the complete opposite direction, hahaha!
i’ve been positively OBSESSED with a southwestern native american style lately, especially since i can easily make the jewelry, accessories and embroidery work by hand! it’s so much more satisfying! pairing the classic styles of turquoise, reds and browns with bright shiny golds and coppers just about gives me the chills!

  • Nataly R. says:

    Hey Doe, marry me!))joking!
But you always striking me on the spot with your super creative ideas and non-typical views on fashion. So I can say that I really respect and love you as a creative person.

  • Hanieh says:

I love ribbons and bows. There is just something about it that attracts me to it.

I also love bright nail polish. I want nice yellows, oranges and blues. I’ve only recent started wearing it and I love it so much.

  • Gaiya says:

yeah… i’m waiting for another fashion revolution. I know I want something fun and unique with a strong identity but yet to find it. Crimped hair looks pretty cool though. Might try out the braided + flat iron technique that was mentioned. I want to try out some looks using Snow Queen. Maybe it will inspire me :D Have a great day Doe!

  • Lady Garland says:

Candyfuturism sounds like a ton of fun! I can’t wait to see what else comes out of the woodwork! XD

  • Tygenco says:

Candyfuturism. I like it; it brings up sweet things in my mind :)

As for the question of crimping one’s hair… I tend to just have someone help me put a bunch of braids in my hair after a shower and I either let it dry for a few hours or overnight and then undo the braid and wal-ah, brush to floof. Do what you feel will work best for you, ultimately.

As for the question of what I am infatuated with? Colour, and art supplies. I have 3 boxes of various oil-sticks and pastel sticks, along with watercolour pencils, regular coloured pencils, crayons, pens, and markers. My silver Sharpie is one of my favorite things to accent big pieces with. (Sadly, I don’t have a current photo of all the stuff I have, it is quite the rainbow.)

  • Danielle Peig says:

Soft Bubblegum pink & my re-painted rollerskates w/ lace, feathers, mini diamond shaped mirror, pearls, cotton candy pink & pearl white colored sequence, w/white & black top hats, & rhignestones….. wait…… & my hair

  • Bonniee:) says:

Awesome term! -candyfuturism- it’s great !<3
And I love bubbly, clear, plastic things too! <3333~~

  • mermaid says:

    I looove the clear stuff.

  • cakes says:

When I was younger I had a crimping iron (looked like a flat iron but had curves) that worked great. Then I went through a phase where I thought crimped hair was trashy and gave it away, which I regretted about a year later. It gives a more even crimp than random braiding.

  • cakes says:

My infatuations are Lady Gaga, accentuating my round face and sharp cupids bow instead of considering them flaws, black dresses with mesh cut outs, studs on clothing you wouldn’t expect them on, Junya Watanabe, Comme des Garcons, anything black and knitted, vests, messy hair, Evan Biddell (Project Runway Canada!), chunky cage heels (even though everyone has them), matte nail polish, pale pink lipstick, and gyspies.

And searching “avant garde” on ebay.

  • Stephanie L. says:

Actually, I was obsessed with obtaining a clear bubble umbrella after i saw a commercial where a girl was holding one. I recently found one and snagged it and walked around with even though it wasn’t raining and I was indoors.

New Obsession: I must obtain a pair of Skull Candy TI headphones in Pink Fur. Every girl needs a pair of Huge DJ headphones lined with bright pink faux fur!

P.S. I already thought of you as a style icon, which has inspired me to become my own style icon as well.

  • Stephanie L. says:

I forgot to add: I call my style UltraFemme.

  • Pinksky86 (Jackie) says:

Umm….whenever I crimp my hair, I always braid it into tiny braids…not cornrows, just braids. I sleep in it overnight and in the morning, my hair hair is super crimped. Love it!! =)

Also, I’m going to be home for the summer and for a summer project, I’m going to be renovating a dollhouse. My grandfather originally built it before I was even born (I never got to meet him), but it’s kinda run down now. My mom had been using it in her classroom (she teaches 2nd grade). I’m looking forward to it. =)

  • ruth says:

I dont know if anyone has mentioned this yet but, when I was going through my 80s phase I found that if after washing your hair at night you put tiny braids all through your hair then in the morning you’ll have some full on crimples.

  • Leana says:

thank you for posting ‘different’ nail colors for summer…i work in a salon and my boss seems to think orange toe nails is the only way to go for summer for EVERYONE……i don’t agree! i like to pick whatever i’m in the mood for and it can span quite an array, from glittery, to blue, to red, to the really cool purple i have on right now to pink etc!!!!! individuality….that’s what i like about you!

  • Kate says:

My style has been evolving a lot, too.
I used to dress sort of “scene”/gothic (much to my horror now), but lately I’ve been more into chunky knit sweaters and cardigans, v-neck shirts, stretchy sequin belts, touques, and moccasins.

  • Kristen says:

I’m sure they have post-90s crimping irons somewhere! You could always ebay a vintage one, but maybe there’s one made with something less harmful to your hair by now! :P

Lately I’m addicted to hot pink nailpolish, showing off my too-often-hidden legs, and white gingham anything!

  • Bunny says:

Bows. Absolutely anything with bows. Bows, curls, and solid black tattoos. <3

  • Chocolate says:

I definitely like your style, m’dear. Clear plastic makes my heart beat just a little bit more faster -I’ve had dreams about owning a bubble umbrella.

Speaking of clear and holographic, these earrings might be perfect for you. They’re super-duper iridescent, just like bubbles dangling from your ears! I have a pair, they’re so cute.

  • cakes says:

I forgot to add eyebrows to my infatuation list. I’m obsessed, and I think too many people focus on their other makeup and forget to maintain their brows. Or overpluck them, which is just as bad or worse. I won’t even mention the people that shave them and draw them on.

I’d kill for Camilla Belle’s brows.

  • maddie says:

Haha, your new aesthetic is very Gala Darling-esque … google holographic unicorn. xxx

  • maddie says:

oops, i mean holographic unicorn gala x

  • Carmella says:

Bows and ribbons! I have one in my hair almost everyday.

I crimped my hair once, but I did a horrible job and ended up looking like a poodle. ):

  • Rickey says:

Wow.You never fail to amaze me. I’m currently infatuated with matte red lipstick, strawberries, coca cola, greece, crocheted food, cameos, and maximum glitter allowed!
