Up until about two years ago, I was always a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl. Sure, I was interested in fashion, but I was too stubborn to go out and redo my wardrobe. Then, one day, my former roommate asked me to go shopping with her, and…well, I spent a lot of money that day. But I did learn that fashion was a great way to express myself (and that it doesn’t have to cost so much!), and since then, I’ve built up an impressive wardrobe.
But now, I’ve run into a problem – winter. Last winter, I did not spend a lot of time outside, so it was easy for me to just throw a coat on and run to my car. Now, I live in Boston, and I spend a lot of time outside going from place to place. I already have some nice coats, scarves, and hats, but underneath my winter gear, I have nothing but sweatshirts to keep me warm. I do have a few plain sweaters, but I have no idea how to spice them up. I also really don’t want to wear jeans all winter – I much prefer skirts and dresses!
So, how does one stay looking cute when it’s 30 degrees outside?
Jenny
Dear Jenny,
I understand you so very well. Being stuck in jeans and a sweater for 3+ months can be depressing and takes all the fun out of winter. I often envy those who get to frolic around in 60-degree weather in January while I have to pile on the layers just to stay comfortable. ;)
In Russia, where I grew up, the temperature drops down to -40 C (that’s -40 F). As a kid, I had to put grease on my cheeks to keep them from getting frost-bitten. New York winters aren’t nearly as cold, but it doesn’t make them any less brutal. I traded in the dry cold of a Russian winter for the humid, windy climate which sometimes feels even colder!
Living on the East Coat, we have to bundle up. But it doesn’t mean we can’t do it while still looking good! Here are a few tricks how you can stay fashionable even in extreme atmospheric conditions. ;)

Winter survival tools: wool coat, mittens, long-sleeved dresses & tops, a purse that can withstand the cold, knit tights, scarf, hat, tall boots, lip balm and hot chocolate!
- Long underwear (aka #1 Winter Essential)
Like this. The difference it makes is pretty unbelievable! Silk or thin cashmere are excellent at keeping your body warm, with minimal thickness added to your outfit. I recommend getting a set that more or less matches your skin tone.
- Warm coat
Finding a warm coat you like is super-important. I have two winter coats – a long, simple one (when I need to look presentable) and a faux fur coat with a hood for when it’s really cold. I got the fur coat at a thriftstore; it only cost me $50 and it’s the warmest coat I’ve ever had! And it happens to be cute too, so I always look forward to wearing it!
- Hat & gloves
Did you know that we lose the most heat from the top of our head? Keeping your brain warm is so critical that your body will sacrifice any other body part before it will let the brain get cold! Feet and hands come in second. Covering those 3 areas will keep you extra-warm. I like to wear knit hats with an extra layer of soft fleece inside – plus, it’s so easy to find a matching hat & gloves set!
Tip: if you are prone to losing your gloves, sew on a piece of elastic to each glove and thread them through the sleeves. You’ll never lose your gloves again!
- Tall boots
Winter boots are different because they are made out of thicker material and have fatter soles. A little bit of platform never hurt anyone, but I don’t recommend super-high heels – you might slip on ice. A comfortable 3″ heel is a good choice. Also, buy your winter boots a size larger, so you can wear them with thicker socks!
- Long sleeves
Long sleeves on anything are your best friend during the winter months! Long-sleeve dresses are awesome, because they are feminine and can be worn with the silk underwear. Cute sweaters & cardigans will give you that relaxed, cozy feel. Lovely!
- Knit tights
Last but not least, knit tights are a-must if you want to wear skirts in the winter. And since they’re opaque, you can wear them with your long underwear (see how everything comes back to it??). Paired with tall boots, they’ll keep you warm.
Other ways to make winter more fun
- Accessorize
Use cold as an excuse to pile on more clothes! Wear sweaters with big, extravagant necks; colorful scarves, berets, beanies! Even the plainest sweater can become a fashion statement with the right accessory – so use brooches, pins, and bracelets to spice up your outfit.
- Don’t put your life on hold because of the cold! (whoa, a rhyme!)
I noticed that a lot of Americans are afraid of the snow. A single snowflake can make them cancel their plans and hide away inside their homes. Maybe because it snows every day in Russia, people don’t regard snow as that big a deal or an inconvenience. They go about their business as usual, shaking the snow off of their hats and boots when entering buildings. Don’t be afraid of the cold! Make and keep your plans. Meet up with your friends, go to the movies or just to kick it at a book store. Do something fun, like sledding or making a snow man. Keeping physically active is the best way to stay warm! Just be sure to go right inside when you’re done – being sweaty in the cold is never a good idea.
- Drink lots of hot tea/cocoa
I love popping into a coffee shop in the winter for a cup of rich hot chocolate. What a sweet way to warm up your day!
- Laugh!
Making jokes about cold weather helps me survive a long winter. Knowing how panicky the cold can make me, Mark invented Bundles: a fake superhero that’s not afraid of the cold! Every winter Bundles comes out dressed up to the teeth, with a scarf wrapped around her head and face, haha. Talk of Bundles puts me at ease and helps me cope with the cold better. :)

This makes me wanna shop, too bad I only have enough for christmas presents now. And for me winter now means pantomime season in the UK and working in the theatre means if I’m not in my car driving to college or in college I’m going to be holed up in a theatre in a boring uniform (all black, I mean how dull. I have to make my make up brighter to liven it up!) But those boots, they are to die for!

That white coat with the muffler is just adorable – but I have never come across one like this here that wasn’t crazy expensive! Does anyone have any suggestions where I could find something like this (preferably in Europe and at an affordable price)?

My favorite winter piece is my green (think the color of Lime Criminal) wool jacket and black leather gloves. I need to get myself a better scarf and hat though.
I may live in California and while we don’t get snow in this particular area, I still walk to most places so I need to bundle up quite a bit.
I really want to get a beanie with faux cat ears on the top this year. I’ve wanted one for a while, since I have pink hair this winter I think it will be easier to pull off. Something like this would be perfect.

Hot chocolate is my ultimate winter essential! I really enjoy the snow, here in the UK it’s a welcome break from the wind and rain, when it snows we actually actively go out and do things (well, throw snowballs and generally enjoy it anyway)!
One of the things on my list of stuff to do asap is visiting Russia in winter. I’m not really one for beach holidays but unique city architecture and snow on the ground sounds far more like my type of trip! Plus I’m a big fan of good vodka!

I enjoyed this post. I live in New England so I know all about winter and snow but I am also one of those people that will stay home on a weekend night if it is snowing out. Not because I don’t want to go out, it’s more because I’m afraid someone will crash into my car. So many people have no idea how to drive in the snow. And people who drive gas guzzling SUVs think they do but they are the worst. Case in point…My bf and I drove back from New Hampshire last night (went there for Thanksgiving) and it started to snow as we were leaving around 3:30pm last night. It wasn’t snowing super hard but the highway we were on (89) is narrow, dark and goes up and down a mountain so when you add snow to the mix it’s horrible. I saw 6 cars slid eoff the road last night and they all were SUV type cars. They think they are safe in that car but they aren’t. Idiots!

I am not ashamed to say that I will often wear big fluffy (or sometimes manly) boots to work, and just bring a pair of heels to change in to. And, while hot chocolate is great, so is a hot apple cider toddy, which warms you through and through (I would NOT suggest having one of these at work, however.)

I definitely second the tights. I love wearing skirts and dresses, and I don’t let the cold stop me. I double-, sometimes triple-up on opaque tights and really stay very warm.
Other things to get me through the winter:
Knee or thigh high socks
Cuddles
Alcohol. Beer/wine tastings really warm things up, and so does a cozy merlot at home with a buddy.

Winter is my favourite season for dressing! Which is lucky since I live in Canada. I love sweaters and layers, and I you can get away with chunkier accessories and statement boots more than in the summer when you don’t want all of that dragging you down. I love wearing skirts in the winter with warm tights and the obligatory long underwear. I also like wearing knee socks in addition to tights and boots, or leg warmers if they fit over my boots. And you can get away with wearing hats indoors for casual things, so it’s great to cover up a bed head.
I also agree with raqueleza; wine certainly helps. Coming in from the cold and breaking out a bottle of red is one of the coziest feelings in the world.
Great guide – now I’m excited for shopping! Not that I’m never not excited about that.

Ugg boots are a wonderful and stylish way to keep your feet warm in the winter. And slouch beanie hats are highly fashionable at the moment and in my opinion look fantastic. I just wish I could find a nice super long 60’s inspired scarf to wrap around my neck fives times over! I must say, I love this season.

my fav accesories are my big white jacket and white knee high boots which have a fluffy trim around the top teamed with a baby pink scarfe they still look good and are very very warm! i am a huge dress wearer in winter and there are plenty of new stockin designs out there to cover the winter months. a bbeanie with a big flower on the side always looks girly and cute and a bonus you can hide bad hair days :)

I need new tights. lol I only have one pair of knits tights, and they’re just plain, boring brown, but I want a royal blue pair, or any nice color. I love winter accessorizing. And you have to do it here too, because it gets damn cold in Montreal(And winter feels like it lasts 6 months.. ughh) Glad to know that you also know real winter(and don’t panic at a first frost.. >.< lol) I guess Russia is probably a little worse than here though. lol

This is a perfect post =] I’ve been trying to find someone that understands how to dress stylishly and warmly. I live in Northeastern Ohio so its been pretty cold and I’ve seen girls wearing TANK TOPS under their clothes.
One girl even braved the cold weather to wear shorts and her Ugg Boots, which I found ridiculous and unsafe healtwise.
I read most of the comments but not all, so I don’t know if anyone suggested hand warmers, but they work great under your clothes, and not just for hands, plus they’re pretty cheap. and I know its been said before, but this is the first year I’ve worn a scarf and its made a HUGE difference in keeping me warm!
Oh, and I prefer more heavy duty boots, since I’m not a fan of Uggs, but if you do get Uggs or other such suede, or leather boots, make sure to spray them so they don’t get soaked and wet. Cold wet feet = not fun!!

Haha, perfect timing, Doe!! I just moved up North from Texas for college, and we had our first “real” snow today. And alas, here in Indiana, the snow lasts for months, not a day and a half like it does back home!! O_O
Anyway, quick question: It looks like Cabela’s offers “Silk Jacquard” and “Silk Interlock” long underwear… what’s the difference?
Thanks again, Doe!
P.S. Thanks so much for the bit about wearing skirts in winter. It’s ironic, but I’m much warmer in my lolita petticoats and skirts than I ever am in jeans!! x3
These are some great posts, from another of my favorite fashion blogs, that deal with the same subject. Hope they help someone out there! ^^ :

My main concern when it gets starts to get cooler (which can be any day of any season where I live,) is to layer as much as possible while still making me feel feminine, without adding too much bulk.
I’ve found that silk slips and camisoles are great investments, since they insolate heat and like alot of people I have trouble letting go of my dresses. Bustiers and torsolettes have a similar effect and petticoats are nice under skirts made of thinner material.
A Lolita-inspired winter coat is defiantly on my Christmas list, even though it is summer down here.

This post was excellent! I actually love fall and winter fashion (because I love to knit and I love accessories!) but you forgot my favourite winter piece…legwarmers! And I’m not talking 80s-exercise-guru. I spent all summer knitting up some thick, gorgeous flared legwarmers with a really intricate cable pattern on them. They’re really coming back, especially amongst the artsy-fartsy crowd like me. C:

I envy Americans and Europeans so much! Here in Brisbane (Australia) winter lasts three weeks, and even then you sweat if you’re not careful! Wearing anything like a thick coat is absolutely out of the question – some girls still wear mini-skirts during our coldest ’season’. (My friends joke that there are only two seasons here: hot, and hotter!)
I wish our climate accomodated the winter fashions; I would love one of the coats pictured. They’re absolutely adorable.

sweet blog! too bad California isn’t as cold as NY, I just want to layer up.
I have a question for you, how do you buy pants that flatter your legs? I have short legs and my knees touch each other. Kind of like a X shape, I think it’s called “genu valgum”. Everytime I buy pants, my legs just look awkward. Any advice?

What a great post!
I’ve always been very good at keeping myself warm at wintertime, but I’ve never looked good. This year I decided to wear skirts, even though I’ve moved to a colder place. It hasn’t been much under 14 Fahrenheit, yet, so it has worked out well.
I usually go for two layers of wool, and a bright coloured nylon-tights on top. I’ve never heard of long silk underwear, wonder if it works as wool?
Keeping my feet warm is very well done with knitted wool socks from my grandmother, and waterproof army boots that never fails on keeping me up with on icy surface with my poor balance.
The only missing thing this winter is my favourite turquoise gloves: I lost them before the first snow came, and I miss them so much. They never failed to brighten up my outfit, and now I struggle to find a replacement.. Oh well.

I love winter fashion! As soon as it starts getting to autumn I start dreaming up all the feminine winter ensembles I’ll wear that year :)
Thick tights, a pretty dress-coat, and funky scarves are a must… and I’m SO with you on the hot chocolate, Doe :)

-I like to layer t-shirts or tank tops over sweaters.
-Skirts and dresses worn over skinny-leg jeans (worn over long johns)
-Wool tights are super warm
- lolita-style skirts with petticoats are very cozy
-scarves are warm and stylish
The trick for me to stay warm is to wear an undershirt under my clothes that I can tuck in – tuck in at my high waist.
People often ask me if I’m not cold wearing skirts in the winter time. I look at their clothes and reply that my tights and skirts and layers are much warmer than their jeans are!

I love winter! I live in the Netherlands, so I know all about cold weather too. I get really excited when I wake up in the morning and everything is white because of the snow, lovely!
And I love to figure-skate, so yeah the winter is totally something for me haha.
Altough I love spring, summer and autumn too :)
I also love to wear skirts and dresses, sometimes I put two tights on, just to keep myself warm, maybe a good tip for people :D

Wool dresses/skirts are great for winter, and petticoats, slips, and tights! Long coats,at least knee-length, are awesome because they keep you warm and they look really classy and elegant with any outfit. And cute warm hats, my favorite is a cream w/ dark brown trim cloche hat, it’s wool, and keeps my ears warm and my husband thinks it’s super sexy, so that’s a plus!!!!
