Sophie
A little while ago I received an email from a girl named Sophie. She said she was 13 years old and it was her dream to meet me in person during her visit in NY. I got a really good vibe and said yes immediately. We agreed to meet on a terrible, rainy day – it was pouring cats and dogs, trains were messed up and I almost thought she wasn’t coming – but one look at Sophie and the sunshine was back! She really is that beautiful, on the inside and out.
Hiding from the rain, we hung out at Kid Robot and got lunch in Soho afterwards. I couldn’t believe show sweet, smart and adorable she was all at the same time! I brought her a lipstick and she quickly put it on (without a mirror! Kids today!). Her mom got video of us walking around the store, it was super cute. :)) Sophie’s mom is a lovely woman; I was humbled when she had told me that Sophie and her friends read my blog daily and look up to me in a big way. We talked about their move from Ireland when Sophie was little; she no longer has her accent but her mom still does, and it’s so charming. Being an immigrant myself, I loved hearing their story.
It’s always rewarding to meet fans and customers, but Sophie had a special impact on me. Meeting her put everything in perspective – what I do, who I do it for and the importance of doing it. I have a rare opportunity to touch real lives in a very real way. I thank Sophie and all of you who read and support what I’m doing from the bottom of my heart.
Love,

Awww Sophie looks so sweet! I’m glad she had her dream come true in meeting you, Doe. So many of us look up to you including me, you’re a true inspiration!

What a cutie! I wish I would have known how to style my hair that well when I was 13. She is so polished and beautiful. I think kids are growing up faster then we did. She could be my daughter, ha!

I’m glad you had such a nice time hanging out!
what a lovely post:) you are in fact VERY inspirational, always and forever!! and that little girl is such a natural beauty!
That’s lovely! Congratulations to Sophie on meeting her heroine, glad you had such a lovely time together :)
How cute!! I bet she’s going to go places when she gets a little older :-)
Very sweet of you to hang out with her! I’m glad you took the time to make her day in NY extra special :-)
To Sophie – I love your nail polish!! What brand/color is it?
BTW I’m very glad she was smart enough to have her mom with her when she met a “stranger” from the internet. Even if you have “known” someone for years on the internet, you never know FOR SURE that they are who they say they are.
Be careful kids!! Meet in public places or at big events, and bring an adult relative or friend! Safety first :-)

What a cutie patootie! She has great style and a fantastic role model to look up to. I too adore your style as well as your message. You espouse being yourself, being creative, being proud and daring and fantastic. It is empowering to young women and I applaud you.

Isn’t that word great?! So funny-sounding! :)
You are lovely. Thank you for remaining down to earth and approachable. It completely sets you apart, and it makes your advice – to live magically and colorfully – all the happier because you do it genuinely.
Hi!

I really liked how she coordinated that Tarina Tarantino heart necklace with her shirt. Great sense of style!
Sophie is rocking that lipstick. Loving it!
That’s so sweet! I just found out today that I got accepted into a summer pre-college program at Barnard in NYC.
It’s the last week of June/first few days in July, so if you have a party at Central Park again in that time frame I’d love to meet you myself. :3

Thank you.
I was actually visiting Barnard and Columbia today and though of you while passing a girl with a fun outfit. :)
I’m sorry to hear about Mark and I hope he is doing better!
I loved reading this story. It’s nice that you could have a nice lunch with this young girl and know that your products are making a different and she can touch you in return. She looks lovely with the shade of lipstick that you gave to her!
That’s awesome that Sophie got to meet you! Also, she’s so pretty!
I think it’s great that you have time for fans. It shows that you care about the people you inspire, which means a lot to us. :)

Of course I care. How can I not? My fans and customers are the reason I wake up every morning and go to “work” with a smile on my face! :D
What a nice story! And yes, Doe, you should realize you’re a role-model to young girls everywhere.

Meeting Sophie really helped it sink in. I’ve heard some famous (and not so famous) people say they don’t want to be role models because it’s hard, but I take on the responsibility gladly. Part of the reason I started this blog is to inspire and to be inspired.
How nice that you arranged to meet her! Sophie looks like a little sweetie, and it sounds like you guys had a great time.
i might be in new york soon to, and i REALLY want to meet you :D. Lucky Sophie, and shes beautiful!
This is very sweet :) i remember reading your blog since i was about 14 or 15 i think? im 19 now. i remember when i used to check your tutorials daily and you went by the name xenia i believe. I loved the clothing you made. it actually what inspired me to begin sewing back then. <3 i really do miss the clothing you made, it is so HARD to find originality these days.
shes adorable!
I’m really touched by this post. An unforgettable experience, huh? I simply wish that I were that Sophie. :)
Sophie is soooo pretty! And the lipstick suits her, perfectly!!

thanks so much becca, it means a lot that you said that!
Aww. :)
What a great experience for both you and Sophie. Can you tell me what color the lipstick is? That looks like the exact shade I would like to wear to my graduation ceremony.
I want her hair ! Badly !
I wish I had had your blog when I was thirteen. I might have worn a cute little vintage cardigan ensemble like Sophie, rather than trying to fit with my jeans/sweatshirt/sneakers school. I tried, and yet, funnily, never quite managed. This was the eighties, and originality was frowned upon, unless you were Madonna. :)
Before I read the text of this post, I knew Sophie had to be Irish, she has the Irish look!! And an awful lot of style! (jealous!)x
I cant express how exiting it was to meet Doe Deere in person. She is more beautiful than you can imagine and not just on the outside, she is incredible. i will never forget meeting her. Good luck with everything Doe
Love you Doe Deere
(thanks for the lovely comments)
