The Secrets of Great Skin

Category How To

They say that skin is the largest organ on our body – whoa. So what can you do to keep it healthy and youthful-looking for as long as possible? I’m a huge skin products buff and will try virtually anything, but only a few products stuck in my daily regimen. Read on to find out what they are!

  • Avoid the sun as much as possible. 15 minutes a day of direct exposure should be enough to produce the Vitamin D but let’s leave it at that. Use self-tanners if you like to go for that sun-kissed look!
  • Always wear sunscreen whenever out in the sun. Sun not only ages the skin, it also causes skin cancer. Opt for the oil-free sunblock if you have oily skin.
  • Include lots of raw fruit and vegetables in your diet. Avoid fatty foods, they can cause your skin to break out.
  • Lots of water = clear skin! Keep a bottle by your side at all times and keep chuggin’!
  • Going to bed with your make-up is a big NO-NO! I will come over and smack you with a plastic ruler Russian teacher style if you do that! Soap and water are your friend! I loooove Yardley of London soap – it’s really mild, plus it’s DIRT CHEAP and you can get it at any pharmacy! Or get it online at the link above.
  • To take off heavy make-up, I use Wet Ones wipes for Sensitive Skin. Amazing!!
  • Exfoliate 2-3 times a week with a scrub. Don’t bother buying an expensive one, either – they all do the same thing, which is scrub at your face!
  • Use a NEW foundation sponge for every make-up session; wash your brushes after each use.
  • Finishing with a translucent loose powder will help you eliminate shine and give your skin that flawless ‘porcelain’ look
  • Moisturize, especially in the winter. Jergens gives you the best quality for your buck/euro/ruble/whatever it is you carry in your wallet. :)
  • If you suffer from serious acne, see a doctor. There is lots of oral medication available to help make your skin better.
  • Remember that all the super-perfect skin you see in magazines is the result of good lighting + a couple hours of professional Retoucher’s work! These people are hired by magazines to make Eva Longoria look hot. ;)
  • And last but not least: learn to love your skin and don’t feel bad if you have a blemish or two! Use concealer to cover it up or better yet – my favorite! – disguise it with a temporary beauty mark and feel like Marie Antoinette the rest of the day. Sharp eyeliner pencil will do the trick. ;)

If you have any additions to the list, post them here!

Change your pillow case out for a clean one every other day, or even every day if possible to help prevent breakouts.

I have very sensitive skin and eczema — I used to rely on Jergens, Lubriderm, and all that “okay” stuff. Now I use anything and everything from LUSH .. they’re amazing, and very good value for your $$. A pot lasts a really long time, and moisturizes your skin like nothing else. The soaps smell AMAZING. I just can’t say enough about it …

I seriously do all that too. I also wear hats or under umbrella in the sun when I want to be out. I also don’t wear makeup half the time (I know, blasphemy right?).

Can anyone recommend anything for blackheads and other random breakouts? Good cleaners, etc..

The best thing I find to use when I get the monthly like “throw yourself out the window” breakout is Lush coalface and then as toner a tiny bit of Herbal Blemish Stick by Burts Bees. One thing to remember with Coalface is don’t scrub your skin with the actually bar as that will just hurt your skin. A lot of people find that Fresh Farmacy helps for really bad breakouts but if your skin is not normally acne proned it’s best that you only use it as a spot treatment.

I’m on birth control, and my skin looks amazing!
Also, you’re not kidding. Take off make up before going to sleep. My skin looks amazing and fresh in the morning after I exfoliate and take all that off my face the night before :]

Oh! My skin can get slightly irritated, especially my cheeks, if I rough them up too much, so I exfoliate at night, rather than any other time. It gives my skin time to relax.

Thank you Xenia so much, you are absolutely beautiful.
