When a bicycle needs a sweater…
Category: Excursions

Walking through Lower East Side, I spotted a bicycle parked by the roadside… covered in crochet. That’s right – everything including wheels, basket and the kick-stand were covered in yarn! I don’t know who knitted it a sweater and what it’s supposed to mean (I suspect it’s just art), but it’s pretty darn awesome! By the way, sometimes the bike moves and you can spot it in different places! Does this mean it works???

Of course I had to take a picture in front of it. :)
- Dress, socks: BetseyJohnson
- Jacket: DIY (tutorial)
- Hat: from Century 21 department store
- Shoes: $69 on Asia Jam
New Yorkers, have you seen this bike? If you know its owner, what it’s for, do tell!

That is utterly awesome! It makes my day more interesting if I see something unusual on the street. Like today when overnight someone randomly chalked messages and quotes onto the street, which I read walking to school.
But, wow, that jumper must have taken up a serious amount of time and wool!

It’s art. There is a guerrilla knitting art movement happening around the world. More photos of street knit art can be found here http://www.thedailygreen.com/environmental-news/latest/knit-graffiti-46060401 and here http://blog.ratestogo.com/yarn-bombing/.
And if you see a bike painted white like a statue it’s a ghost bike. It means someone died while riding their bike in that spot. I have spotted quite a few of them in Boston. One of the reasons why the city is making bike lanes throught the entire city.

I’ve seen a bunch of trees knitted around in Chicago, I guess that is probably where it comes from??
I’ve always thought the trees were really cute, but the bike is amazing.

f.y.i., its called yarn bombing ( taken from wiki->) is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted cloth rather than paint or chalk

There are a group of people that literally knit the streets, light posts, traffic lights, parking metters, but I’ve never seen a knitted bicycle before :O

Holy crap. Knitted graffiti is frickin awesome. Never heard of it before. Both my sister and I (and our mom) love to knit so I’m sure they will be very interested to hear this too. So cool! Haha now I will always be looking at stuff that I want to make a little sweater for… :D

Once I saw on TV something about this guerilla art movement that involved people knitting “sweaters” for loads of stuff: street lamps, bikes, hydrants… Maybe that’s it.

I’m a university student in Austin, TX and there are several locations that have “knitting graffiti” – poles, lights in an underpass, etc. We also have several “ghost bikes” that tokidoki mentioned. Hopefully a sweater-encased bicycle will pop up too! Talk about making my day!

I resent that you presumed it ‘just art’, as if the artist did not have a meaning behind creating this piece. Perhaps to make one think about the beauty of the bike? or maybe to draw ones attention to their dull and grey surroundings…..

I love this outfit, especially the socks and those shoes, and that dress!!! I wore the black version for my high school senior prom, everytime I see it I get excited. Wearing that dress was the first time I ever felt glamorous and beautiful. I especially love it on you with that hat and jacket. It’s elegant and lovely yet casual and cool.
I’ve never seen that bike before but wow! Talk about dedication : )
