Audrey Kitching in Times Square
Thinking of moving to NYC or just wondering how you’d fit in? Take this quiz to find out! (answers on the bottom)
1. The light is red, but the intersection is blocked with cars. It’s a traffic jam. You:
- a) Wait for the light to change to green, and hope the cars will dissipate so you can cross
- b) Ignore the light and cross the street, squeezing in between cars
- c) Go to another intersection where you can cross without interruption
2. You are picnicking in Central Park with friends when you spot Madonna jogging. You:
- a) Run up and ask for an autograph, keeping pace with her
- b) Snap a cell phone picture, quickly and unobtrusively
- c) Ask if anybody brought bread
3. You are invited to a party on a Friday night. The only thing is, it’s in Long Island & only accessible by car. You:
- a) Accept the invitation. It’s party time!
- b) Tell them you already have plans – a new club just opened in the East Village that’s calling your name!
- c) Tell them you’re busy and stay in watching TV all night, eating a sandwich from the deli
4. On New Year’s Eve, you’re hoping to be:
- a) In the middle of Times Square, of course, watching the ball drop. It’s a classic!
- b) With your friends, dancing the night away at a club. Break out the champagne!
- c) Upstate, enjoying a quiet time with friends at your ex’s parents house
5. Your co-worker’s band is performing at a legendary club. You:
- a) Will be there, with 5 friends in hand! Who doesn’t love live music?!
- b) Say you’ll ‘try to make it’‘, then spend the night watching TV and eating a sandwich from the deli
- c) Show up reluctantly just to show respect, and lie that you liked it.
6. You’re in the mood for pizza. You go to:
- a) Domino’s – it’s right across the street and you know exactly what you’ll get.
- b) Famous Famiglia – it’s famous for a reason, and they even have a location on Times Square!
- c) Ray’s Pizza
7. You are walking on Lower East Side on a Saturday night. It’s after midnight. You:
- a) Enjoy the music in your headphones, blocking out the street noise
- b) Walk fast, but keep your eyes and ears open
- c) Sprint to your destination as fast as you can, clenching your purse in one hand and a pepper spray in the other!!!
Answers
1B – No point in waiting for the light to change since the cars aren’t moving anyway. All nearby intersections are probably the same, so squeeze in right between the cars and cross the street – everyone’s doing it and the cop doesn’t mind!
2C – You do nothing because it’s rude to interrupt whatever the celeb is doing. Plus, it’s the third time you saw Madonna in Central Park!
3C – There is no way you’re driving out there in Friday traffic – plus, you probably don’t drive. Clubs open up and shut down all the time, so you are not setting your foot in that new one until it builds up a reputation. You stay in and eat the deli sandwich, like a real loser New Yorker.
4C – You’re sick of the city and feel like if you don’t get away, your head will explode. When the opportunity comes up to go away for 2 days, you jump all over it – even if it means total awkwardness with your ex.
5B or C – B if you’re an ass, C if you’re a sucker. Everyone and their granny is in a band!
6B or C – Domino’s sucks; it’s unclear how it stays in business. Famous Famiglia is decent, but Ray’s is the best!
7B – Lower East Side (LES) is full of people on weekend nights, but it doesn’t mean you should let your guard down. Stay alert and give some change to that bum on the corner, for Christ’s sake!
Deerlings: do you think you could handle living in NYC or is it too much?

I’m hoping to get in to Tisch next year, so I also hope that I’d survive in NYC… I live in Washington, DC right now, so it’s not like I’ve never encountered busy people with places to go and traffic jams and all that jazz :’D I’m mostly afraid that the noise is going to drive me insane (I treasure my quiet time, thanks) or that I’m going to get mugged or otherwise taken advantage of by being gullible. I’ll have to find some bulky friends, haha. (Dominoes DOES suck, by the way. I’d rather eat the a Dominoes pizza box than a Dominoes pizza!)
My favorite “correct answer” was for question 3! So New York!!!
Ahaha this was just too funny. I live in NJ and I’ll be coming to live in nyc soon. I think I’ll thrive ;)
I think I can handle it. I think a little “too much” will be good after years of too little.
I’m not sure if I will ever live in New York, but I am pretty sure I could handle myself for an extended vacation.
Calgary is a big city, but its TINY compared to New York.
I passed the quiz! I love to visit NYC but I wouldn’t want to live there. It’s a bit too crowded and busy for me. I lived in Boston for years and I like the size of that city better. Plus I like driving and having a car (I love my honda fit) and driving in NYC stresses me out. Plus NYC is so damn expensive. I like not living in a box for a lot of money. I have a lot of friend in NYC (mostly Brooklyn area) and their apartments are so tiny and they pay so much for it. In Providence I have a 2 bedroom, double parlor, kitchen, bathroom (with claw foot tub), full attic (i’m in a 3rd floor apartment), all hardwood floors, free laundry in basement and a parking spot in a garage for $800 a month. I spend a good amount of time at home (i have pets…2 kitties & a bunny and I don’t like leaving them alone for too long) so I want a place that can fit all my stuff and one where I can move around and not walk into anything.
While visiting Chicago, I was nearly run over several times because I’m so used to NYC! One woman even yelled at me to stop, and I was like, “Hell no! These cars can wait for me, I’m from New york!”
*laughs* I actually “passed” this by thinking about what I’d do in London!
NYC is great because you don’t need a car. I love that. But my hometown and heart will always be in L.A….and I can’t stand cold weather for too long.
I don’t know how I’d hair (4/7 right) but I love NYC, I will live there one day is my goal. As a Canadian, there are a lot more hoops to jump thru.
I actually live in NYC to be exact the Lower East Side for collage, and I never thought I actually like living but I LOVE IT in Manhattan
I think I’ll stick with San Francisco for awhile. :D
Although I read this the other day & coffee spewed out my nose: http://streetbonersandtvcarnage.com/blog/ask-barf/
It may not be the main article. Scroll down to “Related Articles” then click on “Why Does San Francisco Suck?”
Don’t get me wrong, I love San Francisco & defend it to the death, but it’s still funny & semi-true nonetheless.
That was funny I have lived in Queens NY so I am part of the five boroughs and I am in the city every day for school work and when I go out I am in the city more then in Queens and i failed that test does that mean I am a bad New Yorker just because I love the busyness of the city??
I’ve been reading your blog for a while; I’ve always wanted to live in New York, and your blog has only strengthened that desire. It’s good to know I’d fit in, though I think my “passing” of this quiz was dictated largely by my immense love of sandwiches.
I’d love to visit but I’m not sure I’m really a city gal, I think I did pretty well on your quiz though :) xx
yeah I passed the test !! But I’ll stay in MontrĂ©al (it’s easier when you speak French :P)
I plan on visiting NY next summer, I cant wait !
Haha, I’m not afraid to say that I totally failed! I only got the first question right! But I have always known that NYC is too big and too busy for me!
Alas, I am a midwesterner at heart.
I think I could handle the city.. not so sure about the people… well, the suits.. corporate types… every big city has such a share of arrogant & horrid corporate types that make day to day mind bogglingly difficult… but… I know some day NYC will be home if only for a year.
I’m pretty positive I can handle it.
I’ve only scored 3 on the test but I think I’ll be able to hold my own. Would love to get to NY for once but I just bought a condo so I’ll have to postpone it for a few years…
You quiz reminded me of what I am always forgeting when I throw parties at my apt. i forget that I live in that SCAREY part of Boston, call DORCHESTER! It’s a head phones on, hoodie up, tough walk and turn down the music when people approach area. But I love it and can see the ocean from my front porch.
I scored pretty well on that which is amazing since I have been to NY once (I know there is something wrong with me) and I had to chaperone rotten high schoolers who didn’t want to do anything, I didnt even get to see china town. I need an NYC intervention.
I love #7. I’m 20 and my mother still calls me at 10pm saying..”omg! Where are you? You’re going to get rapedddd!” I think I inherited her paranoia.
I grew up in Manhattan, then LA, and now I live in San Francisco. I love NYC and never had any trouble surviving there, and same goes for San Francisco- which I ADORE. But anyhow, I think just about any city girl would love NYC and do alright there. :)
Thank god you posted this! I took the quiz and got all the answers right where they should be! Its a shocker I’m a New Yorker at heart even when I don’t live there. Yikes!
I’ve survived a good 3-4 years in New York so far, so this quiz was easy (and too funny).
But I think people who have lived here for awhile have a sort of love/hate relationship with it. I live in Brooklyn so I get to avoid some of the pitfalls of extreme noise and drunken bar-goers outside my apartment, but I can’t help but wonder what my $700 a month rent would get me in another, cheaper city…
i just took the quiz and “failed” … which is just a little odd as i happen to live (and survive well on my own ;) ) in a big city. while reading the answers i felt that apparently to be considered “cool” or whatever in nyc, you have to be ever so jaded and pretend that you will not be impressed by anything.
i don’t mean to say that people ought to be “impressed” when spotting a celeb in the park (that sort of behaviour makes me sick ;) )… but i think you may well appreciate the exciting possibilities a big city offers. like going to a concert. when you live somewhere in a tiny village you just can’t go out on concerts every day. so don’t take all the beautiful possibilities for granted, folks :)
greets from berlin
belle
I passed the test! Got all the answers. Yes, Ray’s is the best. How Dominoes stay in business anyways? I’ve been to New York a bunch of times and will never get tired of it. I like the busy lifestyle, thank you very much! :) I’m pretty sure jobs in my field point to New York, so I’m glad that the quiz confirms I can possible survive.
Looks like I could survive there! lol. I was born in Connecticut so I still have a lot of family back there.
I’m hopelessly in love with Chicago though. Giordano’s really IS good pizza. :)
Oh my gosh, I got all of these correct, but then again I’ve been going to the city since I immigrated to Staten Island 10 years ago. Haha.
I always wanted to live in New York! ><
but unfortunately I got all the answers wrong, except for 1, 6, and 7
lol.
ewwww. You’re right, how does Domino’s stay in business?
I would rather live in San Fransisco
it is half LA and NYC I have to admit I don’t like them both I have to have a city where it is part space out like country or beach and city too!
I’m a California girl. Although I’d like to visit (I’ve never been off the west coast) and I like the idea of NYC because it has been popularized by TV and movies and is one of the most famous cities in the whole country, if not the world, I still think I’m way too much of a laidback girl to enjoy all the chaos and craziness of the city that never sleeps! I’d much prefer to be hanging out at the beach!
I could definitley handle it, but I would
NEVER want to! I am not a fan of big cities and my husband hates being around that many people. We want to move to a ranch or a little town in Montana (where I’m from, we live in Reno nv now) when we retireThen I can be that little blue/lilac haired old lady that everybody whispers about, haha. But we will probably end up in a larger city for my career, sucky.
