Tales of the Unicorn Queen

Wrist injury :(

Category Unicorn Queen

Ouch :(

I effed up my wrist this weekend doing too much computer work. It’s called tendonitis, when the tendons get inflamed and it hurts to perform any motion. This has happened to me before (excessive mousing is bad for you!!) but never to this extent. I can still type more or less but using a mouse is out of the question for at least a week. :(

This happened at the worst time possible. I’m *this* close to launching the lipsticks – something I’ve been working on for the past 6 months – and now can’t do any work on the website. I’m not going to give up of course and will continue moving at whatever pace I can towards the launch, but please forgive me if we don’t launch exactly on October 1. The good news is that I have some content prepared for the blog and, with Mark’s help, we should be able to keep going on that.

I’m very demanding of my body without giving much back. I get dangerously engrossed with projects and can spend 6-10 hours slugging away straight. I have messed up my arm, back and neck in the past – & sadly, still haven’t learned my lesson. Now my arm is in a brace – I tried to pretty it up with a Wizard of Oz button and bow – I’m on anti-inflammatory meds + ice compresses every 4 hours. Why does it take me 28 years to realize that I depend my body to accomplish what my mind wants, is beyond me. I want things to happen so bad and so fast, I forget sometimes that my body is not made of steel. To remedy the situation, invested into a cute kitchen timer – cute little thing you wind-up – that hopefully will encourage me to take hourly breaks.

My “I always knew I could rely on technology” wind-up timer.

Wish me a speedy recovery!

  • Poor Doe! It sounds painful, but at least your cast is cute, way to make sparkly pink lemonade out of lemons…. Oddly enough, my friend recently broke her hand and instead of filling it with signatures, I painted a white tiger on it and glued glitter all over it. It was rad, we nearly cried when it was cut off!

  • Sarah Yvonne says:

Oh deer! Feel better. Your wrist injury looks much prettier with a bow and pin. I’ll have to remember that if I ever need a cast (*knock on wood*).

    -Sarah Yvonne

  • Katherine says:

oh no! I really hope you’re arm is better soon Doe! Shame you might miss the lipstick launch, but we all love you so we can wait a little extra!
    get well soon!

  • Simone says:

Aww, maybe you could get someone else to do the mouse-work while you stand behind them and order them around? =D

  • Kristi says:

Ick! that sucks, I’m lucky that I never had tendinitis with the amount of typing mousing I’ve done. When I was younger I would spend 5-12 hours on the computer broke a mouse but never got tendinitis, good thing too for being a graphic designer! :P

    Just take your time.

  • anna says:

Aw Doe, get your arm better soon! Your cast is really cute, wish whenever I hurt my wrist before I had that.

  • Rachael says:

Your health is more important than any make up, no matter how fantastically candyfuture they are ;) I’m pretty much home all of the time, so if you ever need any sort of tasks done that can be fulfilled online (via email) don’t hesitate to ask.

  • Catherine says:

    Im sorry for you 8(
My boyfriend always had the same issue since its his job to be on a computer. He found out that a good ergonomic mouse can save you some pain.. In the meanwhile, if you can’t wait for your wrist to heal before using your computer, you may try to learn using your left arm? Its good once you manage to do it because then you can give a break to your right hand when it starts being tired. :)
    Have a fast recovery Doe!!

  • Alzy says:

You poor thing! I hope you heal up quickly. I love the ice cream timer! There’s also a program you can download that will block your internet access for up to 8 hours (perfect for forcing yourself to break for an hour). You can read about it here!

  • Ashleah says:

    oh that’s terrible Doe :(

i know what you’re going through, as an architectural designer im always losing the hours in front of a computer screen, i even learnt how to use the mouse with my left hand so i can sawp during the day, maybe you could give it a go, it does take a little while to get used to though.

i love your timer, too cute!!! i use the alarm on my computer to pop up over my work every hour which helps.

i hope you have a speedy recovery and take it easy for a little while, your health is more important than anything, and when you have an amazing lipstick line launch coming up its easy to forget that!

  • Suzanne C. says:

Aww so you won’t be able to comment our comments, damn. Well I’m sorry you’re hurt I’ve hurt my neck before staying up all night on summer vacation going back and forth between myspace and online game/social networking sites. I’m always hurting my back on that wood chair with a foam cusion ughh. But At least I never had to see a doctor, but I do think you made your brace super adorable! I LOVE Glinda, I’ve been wanting to be her in a play my whole life! Cute nail polish looks like it matches elf =) Oh and I WANT that timer! Mmm strawberry lol.

  • ShannonM says:

I get tendinitis a lot, even more so when I was in college because I used my hands a lot. At my old job, I was on a computer 8 hours a day. I feel you pain, I feel it!

I’d rather know your wrist is better then fret over if you messed it up further well launching the lipsticks, so take your time darling.

  • Candie says:

Get well soon Doe! Despite your injury you still managed to make your nails look beautiful.

-hope you have a speedy recovery! xoxoxo

  • Midori says:

OH NO, you too?? I have the exact same thing right now! It’s really painful and I hate it. -.-”

I hope you get better REALLY soon!!

  • Rebecca says:

Aw, that sucks Doe! Tendonitis is awful – I get it occasionally from working as a cashier (since I move my arm in the exact same way every few seconds for usually around 6 hours at a time), although I’ve never had it bad enough to need a brace. But at least yours looks cute!

  • Libby says:

Aw Doe! How horrible! As a sufferer of RSI I know exactly how bad these injuries can be, and how much the affect pretty much everything (especially the really tiny things that you don’t think about at all!).

I hope that you get better real soon, and more importantly, that, that timer idea works out and you remember not to work yourself and your body too hard in the future!

  • Hilde says:

Aww, have a speedy recovery, Doe! The best would be if you could just wind up that prettiful timer and be better before it rang! ;)

  • Shayne says:

Oh No! That sucks. But I love how you make your brace look better. :)

For the future acupunture is suppose to work wonDers for that. Also yoga. I sit at a desk 8 hours a day at work and I know staying that way all day is horrible for my body so I do yoga daily (or mostly…I tend to do it 5-6 days a week). Yoga is a great way to take care of every body part, muscle, gland ETC… My favorite form is kundalini yoga. You should give it a try especially if when you have aches and pains.

  • Mar says:

Oh no! My friend gave herself a similar injury (tennis arm) from typing too much. I’ve never gotten tendonitis or a repetitive stress injury from spending too long on the computer, but I do make myself sick staying up too late. Sleep is key but sometimes I’m so busy (even if I’m just busy playing games, haha) that I don’t go to bed when I need to… I’m in college so I’m already pretty sleep-deprived on a regular basis. I got sick several times last year, and I’m pretty sure it was because I wasn’t sleeping enough. I’m trying to catch up on my sleep whenever I can (I went to bed at 10 last night!) but with early classes, it’s hard.

Sorry, that was quite gratuitous. Get well soon!

  • Alice says:

Poor Xenia! This happens a lot to my fellow classmates. I’ve managed to stay good though, but I always use my left hand for mousing for some days if I feel any hint of pain.

Hope you manage to get everything done, but mostly I hope you get well soon!

  • Maria says:

That is the most adorable kitchen timer I have ever seen! Get well soon.

  • Ahh, I’m sorry. You might want to look into getting chair massage. I type alot and have to get it done so I don’t get carpal tunnel, luckily my mom is a massage therapist but it really helps.

  • paige says:

i wish you the fastest recovery ever! but take it easy and don’t stress yourself out too much over deadlines, we understand! i love your creativity in accessorizing your brace – it is really cute

  • Hope your wrist feels better! The brace is adorable!

  • Chrissy says:

Feel better. This has happened to me, but mine was just my thumb to my first finger. I know it came from using the mouse. I hope the pain doesn’t last a week.

  • Kat A says:

wow, i didn’t know you could actually get injured that way! it might be funny, except that you seem to be in a lot of pain. i hope you get well soon!!

  • Rena Fabulous says:

Aww I’m sorry!! At least you were able to cute up your wrist brace. Don’t stress the launch too much, we’re all anticipating it but we understand!

  • Chyna says:

Aww Doe! Feel better soon! <3 I'm sure that with such adoring people around you, and such adorable brace-decor, you'll feel better in no time.

    P.S. I LOVE your nail polish! :D

  • Shannon says:

Hope you get better soon! I know a lot of people are excited about the lipstick line, but I’m sure everybody would much rather you get better first.

  • Katie Coma says:

    Feel better Doe!<3
My mom has worked with computers for years so we feel your pain
She wears braces a lot btu hers aren't as cute
    Get well soon
    love,
    Katie Coma :)

  • Typhoid Mary says:

Wow, I know how much that sucks. I overwork my wrists with my computer, and about half the time I feel like my ankle needs a wrap so I can walk. I hope it feels better soon!

I love the timer, very cute! And good job girling up the brace, looks cute

  • Angie says:

Eep… I kinda feel bad about asking you about dragon scales!

That happened to my wrist at work, give it a soak in Epsom salt, it helps a lot.

  • Lana Gabonna says:

    Feel better Doe~

  • Doe Deere says:

Thanks for the get-well wishes everyone!

    ♥ Catherine, Ashleah, Alice
I’m already learning to use my left arm for mousing, haha! It’s hard but maybe after a while… Well actually I’m hoping I won’t have to get good at it ’cause I’ll get my right arm back!!

    ♥ Libby
I know, it’s such an annoyance! All of a sudden I can’t do anything – my writing is chicken scratch, pushing buttons on a cell phone is a challenge. But worst of all is slicing bread – impossible!

  • Rhia says:

Aww, Doe, go you for being such a dedicated worker, but have a nice rest!
I get all crazy and workaholic sometimes, it can be addictive, gah

  • Cassandra says:

    Aww honey, I understand.
Between kung-fu, pole dancing, and rock climbing I’ve had tendonitis in just about every joint in my body. Also try gently rubbing/massaging it. This will get the fluid build up out of the area and help with the inflammation.
I cannot WAIT for the lipstick launch (something made clear when I had to resort to using gel eyeliner as a substitute for black lipstick this weekend), but your health comes first!

  • Teri says:

Use a Wacom Tablet in place of a mouse. It’ll take some getting used to, but your wrist will thank you!

  • kagitsune says:

Ahhh, Doe… ;_; It’s the curse of all really passionate, creative people. Sometimes we don’t know when to give our hard-working bodies a break!

Praying for your speedy recovery, and I’m sure everyone will understand if things slow down a tiny bit! How long do you need the brace?

  • Karen says:

I had tendonitis in my foot, it was really painful. Rest it as best you can. Take a break :)

  • Caitlin says:

Aww Xenia, I hope your wrist feels better soon! I’m sure everyone will understand if the website isn’t finished by that time, right now I hope you just take this time to give yourself a much needed rest.

I always said if I ever had a cast of some sort I would pretty-ify it. I think you made yours really cute.

That kitchen timer is so adorable.

  • Kat K. says:

Oh, you poor thing! Feel better soon, okay? Always remember: ice cream is the great healer.

  • Kat K. says:

Oh, you poor thing! Feel better soon, okay? Always remember: ice cream is the great healer.

  • MarySunshine says:

Oh wow, tendonitis is no fun, I know I’ve got it in both knees, but I love how you sparkled it up with Glinda. It makes me all bubbly inside.
And I don’t think any of us will be bothered if there is a slight delay on the lipstick launch, we love your makeup but the person behind the product is much more important.
Hope your recovery is speedy! :)

  • kiki says:

oh, i bet you’ll be better in no time!! :)

  • Pinksky86 (Jackie) says:

Oh no!! Poor Doe, I’m so sorry you hurt your wrist. I can feel where you are coming from. One time I had a school project due and worked about 14 hours sewing this huge sculpture. I stayed at school until 8:00am in the morning and had the class at 12:00pm. When I came to class my hand was hurting so much. I had to wrap it up and keep an ice pack on it. But at least my teacher liked my project. =)

I just want to say that we all appreciate what you do on this blog and on your limecrime website for us. It’s amazing what you do and I know you put your whole heart and soul (and body) into it. Thanks Doe!! =)

  • Courtney says:

Awwwww! Thats happened to me once and I was annoyed out of my mind! Hope you feel better SOON!!

  • dorion says:

i hope you get better soon! at least your wrist look beautiful, even in wrapped in whaterver it’s called ;)

  • Nicola says:

I’m sorry =( I have the same problem, especially in the winter as the cold inflames them more.

These exercises help me a LOT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUyMNyrOHJQ

Find which set works for you and do them every few hours/ whenever you remember. You’ll feel the stretch in your tendons but they’ll eventually loosen up.

I hope these help and you’re back on form soon! Good luck with the launch.

  • Glendy says:

AWWW :( feel better girl hope you recover soon

<3 *heart sticker on your brace*

    Much love,
    Glendy

  • wumples says:

Ooooouch! I’ve had tendonitis before, at it’s the pits! I hope you feel better soon! Get lots of rest – and kudos on the brace, you’ve made it lovely! :D
