Your ME time
Category: How To, Inspiration
Your sweetie’s out of town? Say goodbye to dirty socks on the floor and hello to your newly-found ME time! When I dropped off Mark at the airport last week, I was looking forward to all this time I thought I’d have to myself. But by the time I got home, I realized we’d grown so close together that there was virtually nothing I could do that wouldn’t require his involvement! You can imagine the horror. Of course, I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t figure out some way to take advantage of the situation. ;) Presenting: *dun dun dun*
Your me time,
or things to do while your beau is away

Model: Mosh | Photo: Viva Van Story
- Host a slumber party
Most boys have a natural aversion to pink nail polish and talk of menstrual cramps. Whatever. Why not throw the grooviest, 60s-themed slumber party of the century and offer up your dwelling as the ultimate slumber pad? Dress up in fun colors, catch up with your girlfriends and discuss penis sizes all you want (just don’t tell the boys we do this. ;)).
- Watch a ridiculous movie
Chick flicks make us sob, but boys would rather poke themselves in the eye with a sharpened chopstick. Solution? Watch them without him! Pour yourself a cup of hot chocolate (my favorite is the Mexican variety) and indulge in your favorites – mine are Barbarella, Zoolander & Austin Powers!
- or – Rent a good movie that he’s already seen but you haven’t. Something to discuss when he’s back!
- or – Tune into a TV show that he hates and never lets you watch, and enjoy every single minute of it! (Sex & The City re-runs, anyone?)
- Indulge in foods you like

Photo: VeggieKitty
Adore sushi but he can’t stomach the idea of raw fish? Grab your friends and go to a Japanese restaurant he’d never go to. Or learn to make sushi at home!
- Wear the clothes you like
Sometimes girls’ and boys’ tastes don’t match; sad but true. Every woman has at least one outfit that she adores (hello, gray dress!) but her beau just can’t appreciate. Could there be any more perfect time to rock it??
- Go shopping alone
Because women are from Saks, and men are from Sears. ;)
- Finish a project

Remember that novel you tore half-way through and then abandoned for lack of time? That dress you meant to fix but never got around to? Accomplish something and feel proud of yourself!
- Spend a day at a spa
Boys don’t understand the purpose of spas. Somehow, the notion of splashing around in a tub full of pink water doesn’t entice them the least bit, nor do they get the appeal of inhaling weird scents in the aromatherapy room for half an hour. Grab your girls (and a gay friend) and enjoy yourself!
- Pamper yourself
Take a 30 minute bath (these Cupcake bath bomb and Chocolate Covered Cherry French Tart soap look good enough to eat!) while reading a good book or listening to music. Then pamper yourself with every treatment, scrub, peel, masque and cream you can find in your bathroom!
- Do an impromptu pinup photoshoot
Because why the heck not! Skip the trashy lingerie he likes to see you in, and make love to the camera solo-style in retro stockings, feather mules and a fake beauty mark! While you’re at it, learn all about bras and how to find one that fits you.
- Explore your body
Get a fun sex toy and experiment with it – on your own! My favorite store in NYC is Toys In Babeland, which is a female-centric sex shop (yay!). Apparently, they sell stuff online, too!
- Send him naughty emails

Photo: αlfanhuí
Surprise your sweetheart with an electronic love letter (JPEG attachments from that pinup shoot are optional ;)). Keep it as naughty as you like! And, having all this fun on your own, don’t forget to call him every once in a while – boys appreciate that.
Deerlings: what are your favorite things to do on your own?

I adore your ideas. I think it’s really important not to be hanging around the phone waiting for your lover to call, that’s when you know you’re losing your identity for a relationship.
These are fantastic things to do alone or with your girlfriends. Girly yet a little naughty.
i love it ;D

Oh and something i do love doing on my own is just dressing up in ridiculous outfits and outrageous editorial-esque make up and singing around the house. also walking around naked (it’s important to embrace & feel comfortable in your body) and taking showers/baths in the dark [; but maybe that’s just me.

Talk to my girlfriends on the phone with out him speaking every 5 seconds. There are some people I just put on speaker phone when they call to avoid the whole relay thing.
I also spend time with my vanity and wigs. Or order on demend something he won’t watch and watch it with my kitty (sometimes even his kitty wants to watch it).

When my boy isn’t around I tend to spend more time pampering myself, try to finish up projects and clean up around the apartment. He’s a bit of a slob so it’s a lot easier to clean when he isn’t around.
I also extend my yoga sessions too. I tend to do yoga daily (or at least 5 times a week) but I usually have to keep it to a certain length of time (usually no more then an hour or hour 15 min) since the only time I have to do it is after work. And I have to keep it to that time length so we don’t eat dinner at 9-10pm every night. As it is we tend to eat late since I don’t get home from work til 5:30-6pm and by the time I start and finish yoga it’s already close to 8pm. And he’s the cook in the household so he usually cooks while I do yoga unless he decides to do yoga with me which happens occasionally.
All of the things you listed Doe are great but most don’t pop in my head to do since my bf and I are a lot in alike in many ways. We both love the same types of food (minus meat…i’m a veggie, he’s not) so I can’t think of any restaurant or type of food I would go to or eat that he wouldn’t eat. I also hate typical girly movies (i’m more of a sci-fi/horror/foreign film kind of person) and so is he. But I have done the “send bf sexy photos while away” before and that is always fun.

That’s a nice list! When my bf is away (even just in another room!) I love to watch the chick flicks alone because then I can tear up and cry all I want! (Notebook, Atonement, Becoming Jane etc…) Also I sometimes like to watch the heavy chick flicks but believe it or not we enjoy watching them together! Well, some of them at least ^^
Also I love taking a bath with candle lights and watch Gossip Girl (downloading it right now hell yeah). But we actually watch Lipstick Jungle together!
Also I love the sushi idea! My bf isn’t as big of a fan of sushi like me so this is an excellent idea. And shopping alone, very nice :)

Oh yes, walking around naked is a great idea! Boys always try to jump all over you if you do it around them, hehe.

Love these suggestions, and definitely indulge in several when my hubby abandons ship. I also love to take up the whole bed and sleep really late, hit the outlet mall, and listen to nostalgic, highly girly music that makes his skin crawl. ;)

Great ideas!
Actually, they’ll come in handy a lot since I have a whole lot of free time now, sans the bf(well, I just became unemployed, and can’t get a job now until February). Thanks a bunch!<3 lol

When my parents are away, I like to blast my favorite music, put on a ridiculous outfit (or even a bellydancing outfit) and dance around the house like a nutter. Quite fun.

Last time Russel left me (24 hour comic book day) I watched movies with our pug
Last long shift, I launched my own sex toy site…
PS. I haven’t forgotten you being head editor on PRS is driving me batty. On top of the big thing I’m launching tonight and the baby….

I definitely play dress up, I also sing at the top of my lungs, watch those chick movies you mentioned, and I’ll play the crap outta my guitar! I love when he’s not around (lol!)

Ah, masturbation… now that’s a way to spend some “me” time. But when my time with my cheap (but effective!) vibe is done, I like to spend it watching ridiculous, embarassing movies that I’d rather no one know I have any desire to watch.

My current favorite thing to do while dbf is at work:
Wear cute Playboy Bunny brand lingerie and hula hoop to either a) House Bunny b) House Bunny soundtrack or c) both! :)

My fiancee and I are always together so it’s really strange when I have time to myself. I usually do crazy make-up then take pictures. Or I go on long walks and dance around the house doing laundry. If I want to eat then I usually eat what he dislikes ( for instance soup, salad and actual healthy things) Men are wonderful and I love my fiancee but it is nice to have time to take a bath. X3

dress up is always a fun one.. and walking around naked :]
My me time comes after 7.30 when my daughter is in bed (except when im pampering.. my one year old has an obsession with watching me shave, put on face masks or paint my nails??) this comes in handy alot!
Definatly gotta try the photos. . tho the only time hes on the internet is when hes at his mothers.. maybe not such a good idea?

I usually spend most day in my room, blasting music. :) I love being alone because I can do anything I want without a single “Hey, what are you drawing?” or “That outfit is CRAZY!”
I love playing with makeup. :)

i am not a deerling but i do check your site all the time and i adore it and would love to be a deerling.
I don’t spend as much time with my boyfriend as you, but i do spend almost ALL of my time with my son, as i should but when he isnt around my favorite “me” thing to do is do ridiculously fun things with my girls. Such as we have tea parties where we act fancy and wear fancy hats and drink tea coffee or wine. Or my favorite is we dress up like zombies and watch old zombie/horror movies together.

I really love your ideas. Sometimes when I have “me” time I forgot to do/try some of those things on the list and so, it was a good reminder! :)
But when I do remember to have some “me” time I like to do the following: read that Jane Austen book that has been sitting at my bedside for months, turn the music up to full volume and just dance around to get away from it all, get a pint of Ben and Jerry’s and watch my favorite romantic comdies over and over, etc.

This list came at the perfect time as my boyfriend just left for Italy for 20 days! Thanks for reminding me to enjoy the stuff he is not such a fan of while he’s gone!

Hmmm…that picture thing is a good idea. I’ll have to think about doing that when i don’t feel as big as a house (even though I’m not as big as I could be yet, but I still know there’s a child growing in me). Though, I still might. Then I’ll have to pretend I know nothing of the pictures when he uses my computer to check his mail, lol.

Playing dress up!! And I LOVE experimenting with my make up when no one can come along and say something like “What happened to your eye?!” (Thanks, unnamed family member..) I particularly like dressing up as a porcelain doll or lady ring master =]
I love the “thinking of you” photos idea but I fear that they’d be discovered =s

my beau just arrived from a two weeks ausence (he went missioning in a very isolated place), and I did do some of the stuff you say here! I cut my hair short (he says he doesn’t like that, but now he does, apparently haha), I made some jewelery projects, went to the theatre, spent like 11 hours in a girlfriend’s house talking and saw “VIckyChristinaBarcelona” (yummy Javier Bardem), etc. I had a good time, though is so freaking hot in my city (is summer here!)…
Great advice. Is essential for our mental sanity to be independant and be happy when our lovers are away! :)

I CLEAN until I can safely eat off my toilet seat (not that I want…nevermind), and then I relish how spotless the house stays for DAYS. Then I watch awful movies that my boyfriend would hate, while eating carbs like the world’s gonna end. THEN I sing and play piano for hours…showtunes…followed by more carbs.

I love your comment “Women are from Saks and Men are from Sears.” That’s so hilarious and true. When my guy is gone I spend more time shopping than anything, I watch romantic girly movies including “The Note Book.” I usually go on a hard diet while he’s gone, nothing but salads and fruit. It’s like a self cleansing thing, my skin looks good,I look good. I also spend endless hours mixing and matching clothing, shoes and hats in my closet trying to come up with the most clever outfit with what I have, sounds dumb but I have so much fun doing it. I love going to the beach in the late afternoons curling up in the sand and writing down my thoughts.

wow…i love my ME time!!! i try to have some of that whether my bf’s in town or not…
I like to visit art galleries and museums that i know he’d be bored to see.
I also get a bit workaholic and try to finish up any tasks left…
I like watching films (like twilight-latest movie obsession) with my girlfriends because guys cant really appreciate a hot young actor, can they? :P
I like a bit of meditation or tai chi time because…well i need to be all alone to do those things… :P

I love going to the movies alone. So many people look at me like i’m a psychotic when i say that, but i love it because i can I love the feeling of coming out of the theater glowing with happiness, or passionate about the (insert issue). And when someone else says something against it when i think it’s great, it bursts my bubble.plus, i can cry, laugh, and eat as much as i want without anoher person loking at me funnily or stealing all my maltesers. so, there.
GO TO THE MOVIES LADIES!!

This post was so sincerely inspiring. My boyfriend and I are in an LDR (he goes to school in FL and I’m here in good ol’ NYC). I’m a busy gal- school, work and applications to school (since I graduate in the Spring from my current Community College). I’m a busy gal who loves dolling herself up but nowadays I just don’t find the time. This post, however, reminded me of all the little things that may calm myself in my angst of a busy worklife. <3 I should go to a Friendly's in 50's chic and enjoy a milkshake! Hehe, thanks Doe.
