Tales of the Unicorn Queen

Photo: Tim Walker

Roses have had meaning since the dawn of times. They symbolize beauty, youth, purity, hope, and of course are the ultimate symbol of love. Since the winter, I’ve been haunted by roses – I’ve incorporated them in my wardrobe, decorated my hair and home with them, and attempted to concoct the perfect rose perfume. For The Love Of Roses picnic is my chance to share my affection for these gentle yet powerful flowers with you, and celebrate my 29th birthday.

It’s an open invitation and anyone is free to come (please bring your own blanket). We will have cupcakes, rose-water lemonade, and – if last year was any indication – lots of wonderful people. Dress code is romantic floral; rose-related presents encouraged and always welcome! We hope to see you there!

Please RSVP in comments so we know how many cupcakes to bring. :)

  • Colleen W. says:

Aw, I’ll be in NY from June 17-21. :< Wish I could go.

    Doe Deere Reply:

Ah! I wish I could move it up a week but unfortunately I can’t. :/

  • Michelle says:

Hehe, I’m so excited to learn you’re a fellow gemini! :) Too bad I’m all the way in California though….Have a wonderful birthday!! <3

  • Lily says:

Rule of etiquette states that you really shouldn’t ask for Presents in an invitation.

    Kristabelle Reply:

…it’s a BIRTHDAY party…and she wasn’t asking for presents, she was saying if you’re going to bring a present, make it rose-themed.

    Doe Deere Reply:

Thanks for the reminder but I like to play by my own rules here. :) And my rules state that there is nothing wrong with letting my guests – whom I’m happy to see with or without the presents, regardless – know what makes me happy at the moment.

By the way, if my memory serves me well, you have yet to say anything positive on my blog. Why is that?

    Lily Reply:

Then your memory is fading with your age. Perhaps you should go back and read them? One example would be guest tutorial spot and others. Don’t be so quick on the defensive and label everyone a hater.

    Doe Deere Reply:

Well, it’s something that I noticed lately. Please try to be more positive in the future. :)

    Sarah Reply:

Does ‘please try to be more positive’ mean ‘don’t criticize me in any way’? I think she made a fair point and it was a bit harsh of you to respond the way you did, Doe.

    Eloise Reply:

Maybe Lily is not a positive person- And that’s okay- After all, it’s our own personal choice whether we want to be positive or negative. No one should have the right to tell us to be one way or another. When you create a blog and “put yourself out there”, there is bound be both positive and negative feedback.
I’m a long-time lurker and have only posted once or twice before…but i must say that there are enough positive comments on here for you to be content with. Maybe the “negative” comments help you appreciate the positive comments more! See? there’s always the a bright side to everything!

    Nikki Reply:

Agreed! Blogs are regarded as open forums and you can’t tell people to be more positive or only to write nice things about you. You are lucky to have so many nice comments every day that the odd criticism or negative comment should be respected for what it is. I do like your blog though, but I feel that sometimes if there is any contrasting argument from a reader then they are shot down for having an opinion. :(

    Doe Deere Reply:

I don’t mind differences of opinions – in fact, when expressed respectfully, I think they enhance a discussion. But this particular commenter has been leaving rude and negative comments on my blog for a while, and I thought it was time to address it.

By the way, having a public blog and ‘putting myself out there’, as most bloggers would agree, does not mean I should tolerate rudeness & aggression towards me.

    millitill Reply:

Doe, way to go with the patronizing tone! You come across like a school marm scolding her pupil!
People are not negative because they express their opinion, I agree with Lily it is rude to ask (ok, encourage) that people will bring you presents.
I don’t see where the rudeness or aggression was in her comment? All she did was pointing out that its considered rude to ask for presents.

    Kristi Reply:

It’s not like she said, “OMG GIVE ME PRESENTS OR ELSE!!!!111″ she said rose-related presents encouraged. It’s ROSE THEMED.

    Nicole Reply:

    Get over yourself.

    Nicole Reply:

    That was to Lily btw.

    Kristabelle Reply:

I really don’t understand why someone would bother posting something negative…if you don’t like the blog, you are free to go somewhere else and not read it. So why go to the extra effort of commenting and spreading your negativity?

And Nikki, just as Lily has the right to express her opinion, Doe also has the right to express her opinion about what was said, especially because it’s her blog.

    Jonel Reply:

I agree, it’s Doe’s blog – don’t need to shove down her throat, or start rudely snapping back. What Lily said could have been interpreted as rude; it was straight up “Rules of etiquette says…etc.” I would’ve thought it was rude if it were my blog and I was misunderstood.

What Doe said was legitimate, I don’t see why you’re all getting upset and claiming that negativity is being silenced just because she’s just EXPLAINING herself. Plenty of haters are out there overreacting to stuff like this. “Your memory is fading…” is rude IMO.

It all really depends on *how you READ the text* and the tone you interpret for it. So if you don’t like being talked to patronizingly, then like Kristabelle said: don’t read it!

    Mara Reply:

Normally I wouldn’t butt in but this is pathetic…

Lily….you need to stop instigating and reading between the lines. The way you are acting does label you as a hater. You are jealous of Doe and her success and attention so you just want to rain on her parade. It’s immature so grow up.

Sarah…you are no better than Lily.

Millitill…honestly if you can’t see the petty rudeness of Lily and Sarah then you need a lesson in respect. Especially when lily had the audacity to reply to Doe “then your memory must be fading…” is proof enough of her snootiness probably stemming from insecurities and self esteem issues.

Oh and ladies…lack of respect also represents lack of intelligence. If you have a hard time understanding some of the words you can google them or look them up in a thick book called a dictionary.

    p.s. Happy Birthday Doe Deere

Ugh! I totally wanted to make it this year. :( My sister’s bridal shower is the next day though. I am still planning on coming there sometime this summer though! If not then early fall cause we have a lot of wedding preparations going on. I hope you have a great birthday! I am sort of going through a florals phase as well(and pearls/classic pastels). Pretty strange seeing as I mainly always go for darker fashions but since I was little I have always had a secret soft spot for floral prints! I still think were like secretly related or something haha.. I bet we would have an awesome time shopping together. <3 Ok ending long comment.. now.

  • Lana Gabonna says:

Definitely coming!! I can not WAIT.
Last year, i started reading your blog only a few days after the birthday picnic, and i was kinda upset that i missed it.

  • Steph Ku says:

    Hey Doe!

I’m a reader from Australia and, while i cant make it to your party myself, I hope you have a fabulous day.

I was just looking at the photos from last year and it looked hugely fun.

    Happy Birthday!

    Steph Ku

  • Oh, how I wish I lived in New York!

  • ButacuP says:

    Doe,
Oh how I wish I could come to your party and celebrate with you. I could not even make it to San Francisco to see you show off your fabulous lippies. I’m not even in California at the moment to be remotely near you (I’m on an island right now). Maybe if you printed out a picture of me and taped it to a popsicle stick and used it as a Flat Stanley we can then both pretend that I was there. Happy birthday to you and may you have many more to come!!

    ButacuP

P.S. Pictures of your wonderful celebration would be greatly appreciated.

  • Jenny Sixto says:

Ohhhh your picnic sounds like so much fun!
As I am in Japan and can not go I would love to send you a birthday present!
Do you have a address that I can post a present to?

Have a lovely time at the picnic and I look forward to some pictures xoxo

  • Rose Colored Stars says:

I started reading this blog earlier this year, and only just started getting into LC and all the neat stuff all over this site. This party looks like so much fun! I love roses too, they’re kind of an ongoing theme with me. :D Unfortunately I probably wont (I’ll try to be, though) able to come. If I can’t come, have a fantastic party in my absence and I wish you many many roses in your honor!

  • peanut.love says:

I think it’s awesome that you’re so willing to invite anyone who wants to celebrate your birfday with you. yeah, I said birf. I think it says a lot about you, not that you don’t exude sweetness…constantly. I hope you have a wonderful day, and year..with many more to follow. :3 I am also wondering why it is that people tend to get all up in your “grill”…lol…when commenting on your blog. Desperation stinks. Anyway, stay adorable ma deere…and keep being sweet…the more people like you there are in the world, the more hope I have for humanity.

  • Kellee says:

Aw, I wish I could go! Even I could get there, I’m actually planning a surprise birthday for one of my best friends that day. Hope you have a great day though!

  • Phoebe says:

I’m just sad that I live in the UK. :(

The rose theme is a wonderful idea though.

  • LMP says:

The rose theme made me envision a skirt made of rose petals. Someone should make that happen. Also, today is my birthday and I am commanding that all people do something fun, eat something delicious, and if possible, feed the ducks!

    Becca Reply:

    Happy birthday!! :D

  • Anya says:

I wish I could make it but I don’t think I have the cajones to bus or train down from Boston with no one to have my back or help me navigate upon arrival. But I wish you a very happy birthday and cross my fingers for good weather for you!

PS: I hunted down a Space NK and finally got my hands on your lippies. They made my month!
