Is Red 40 Lake Dye tested on animals?

Category Beauty

There is a lot of misinformation on the internet about the Red 40 colorant being tested on animals. Since we use it to make the red in Lime Crime’s Chinadoll vegan eyeshadow palette, I’d like to address this issue once and for all. I called the FDA on the phone personally this morning to obtain the following information:

According to the Federal Code of Regulations (21: sec 74.340), Red 40 is already approved for use in food & cosmetics and as such does NOT require animal testing.

Now, most things have been historically tested — that’s one way we know they’re safe. But further testing on Red 40 Lake Dye is no longer required, and our suppliers do not conduct it. Being Cruelty-Free is of utmost importance to us at Lime Crime!

If you need further clarification, please contact FDA directly: 888-INFO-FDA. Thanks for reading!

I’m excited about the upcoming collaboration between Lime Crime and the talented fashion illustrator, doll-maker and friend, J. David McKenney, who has lent his talents to Heatherette, Dolce & Gabbana and Mariah Carey among many others. It’s going to be something very special, so stay tuned! :)
